(for all of the hemispherically challenged suggesting Summer (or Winter))
How about a theme of "Summer in Winter / Winter in Summer"....
A photo that endeavoured to capture a little bit of summer in the middle of winter, like a houseplant juxtaposed against a blizzard through a window, or the pile of melting ice outside a year-round skating rink (do they have them outside Canada?)
I like the idea of using "Photography" as a subject (as a nod to B&H)...

I found a perfect spot (accidentally of course) and got 3306 bounces, and rolled the odometer twice, ending with a score of 22974510, though the screen only showed 2974510.
I've got the screen-shot, honest, just gotta figure out how to post it...

Almost. The glasses I use (occasionally) for far vision mess up my near focus. So it's sometimes for me as well...

Looking at the distance scale on my lens, I'd think that if you had to focus at anything less than infinity for any of the objects you mention, you'd have way more important things to worry about than a poorly focused picture...

I never shoot either vertical or horizontal.
I seem to always be a degree or two off...:lol::lol:

I've heard similar things... I think that the underlying issue is that the level of respect that a good photographer could reasonably expect has been eroded by the availability of inexpensive, somewhat decent cameras. Everybody seems to have one... (Not counting phones or webcams, or my DSLR's, there are 4 digi-cameras (all > 6mp) in my house in regular use.)
Now a slight comfession...
My apologies if you feel they're warranted, but I might be a little close to what Peter refers to as a "weekend warrior". I don't look for business or advertise, and only do 2 or 3 weddings a year. When I get asked to do a wedding (and I NEVER volunteer) I do my darnedest to convince them (usually a business associate or 'friend of a friend' etc) to hire a "real" wedding photographer, and failing that, I make sure that all parties involved are aware that I'm not a professional-calibre photographer, and that I accept no responsibility, and make no promises other than to give it my best shot. After recounting a couple of wedding-photo-horror stories, I then make them sign an agreement to show they understand my stipulations. This weeds out at least half of the people that ask me. I agree with Peter that the weekend warriors aren't helping things any, but I justify myself by stating that if, after all my attempts at dissuasion, they still want my services, if I didn't do it, someone would 'take them for as much as they could, and it'd be another BBC wedding.
The whole billing thing has been a problem though... After I go to such pains to convince them I'm not a professional (mostly to cover my butt if it goes south, I guess) I can hardly turn around and charge them guild rates...
Mu shoots in the last couple of years have all turned out really well (if I say so myself) so I guess it boils down to a confidence issue for me...
But the trend, in all areas of the service industry - not just photography, has been to give more and more for less and less.
Educate the consumer? I'm afraid they're being educated already, and it's all wrong...

just a price check, for what it's worth...
I sent my K10D in with a 50-135 that had died just to see if it was just the LCD. I dropped the camera bag last winter, in some seriously cold temperatures (about -35 F) and cracked the rear LCD - and more, but that's all I could see. I couldn't wait for a repair then and purchased a K20D the following day.
Then, a couple weeks ago the SDM motor in my 50-135 died, and I sent it in under warranty (they replaced it), and I sent the K10D along as well, thinking that if it was just the LCD, it'd make a good backup camera.
I got my K10D back from Pentax Canada (just 16 days later) after receiving and declining a quote of $600 to replace the motherboard and the rear LCD. I will put the money towards a new body if and when the need arises.
Anyone need any K10D parts ? (or have a motherboard and LCD for cheap?)

Good point. Because you know it'd be the big spenders of the camera world (think advertising) that started setting standards... MS and Intel control the direction Open Source software takes not only by producing the baseline hardware, but by injecting all kinds of $$$ into the industry, kind of an "economy of scale" thing.
The Frankencamera mentioned in this article could have an HP, Kodak or Canon sponsorship badge. Or all three. And while Pentax users generally agree that a badge doesn't make a camera, you can bet that the people behind the name on the badge are in it for their benefit, not ours. Why would a Frankencamera be any different?
How long until Dell started selling one?
We'd be better off if the camera companies opened up existing firmware - even if only for "obsolete" models... For example, they won't be releasing any firmware updates for the K10D - and soon they'll all be past the state where they're still under warranty. Why not let the braver souls start messing with their own cameras? One could almost turn a K10D into a "K7 lite" with a bunch of firmware tweaks...
OK, maybe not a K7, but you catch my drift...:rolleyes:

I've had a couple of bikes with this same problem...
An easy solution is to attach (affix somehow - epoxy, tack-weld...) a strong magnet to the lowest point of the bike... I have a couple "rare-earth" magnets - very strong - attached with epoxy to the underside of the swing-arm pivot. Never had to fudge a light sensor again...

The red flash (the little square) indicates focus point, not focus confirmation. It shows you which AF sensor the camera is using to determine focus...
Focus point is user selectable : Auto, Manual, Centre...

Good to see that even a 'hard boiled' right winger can have a sensitive side.
Congrats. 10 weeks eh? Been there a few times now. Lots of fun. An amazing time...
And just think, in 10 or 12 years, you'll be able to use him as a recipient for hand-me-down camera bodies, and an excuse to upgrade...

Loved them in 2007 - considering going again this year - how much new material do they have this year ?
Rules concerning cameras seem to be set by the venue or promoter, not the act. At the Ottawa show they wouldn't allow SLR's (or any 'pro' looking cameras, but compacts and bridge cameras were OK.
I went out and bought a Pentax Optio the day before the concert. We were only 6 rows from centre stage, so it served the purpose... Here's a few snaps...:

This is a program (the tax, not the study) that has been in effect for the trucking industry for a long time now... It places the tax burden of maintaining highway infrastructure on the people who are using that infrastructure.
That way, regardless of where the fuel is purchased, the regions with the busiest streets and/or highways will get proportionately more money for upkeep than slower, less busy areas... Or, say you're on a trip and your vehicle has a large fuel tank. Fuel purchased and taxed in one state under the "tax at pump" model, will actually help all the states it's used to travel in, not just the state where it was purchased...
We're paying for the roads anyway you look at it...

However, the PC plugs are notorious for falling off or not connecting as positively... Most of the time it's not an issue with miniphones...
If you avoid buying your miniphone cords at the dollar store, there shouldn't be too much difference in quality.
I always turn off devices (photo,audio,video) when plugging / unplugging cords. Safer for the device that way - no pop-causing shorts to worry about...
FlashWaves triggers give you all 3 options : PC terminal. miniphone, and hotshoe. I tried them all, just because I wanted to compare, and if I ever couldn't use hotshoe, I'd prefer miniphone to pc cords.

It's interesting reading on the web about turning it into a "Hackintosh" quite easily... I'm thinking about doing that... The thought of having a 10" netbook running Mac OS is intriguing enough that I bought the white model :lol::lol:

That's Galaxy Camera - I bought my K20D kit off them - it arrived 3 days later! (granted I am in Ontario as well, but they do ship quickly)
Another eBay seller up here is prodigital2000 - though they sometimes advertise without stock to back it up... They blame it on in-house sales, but how they can claim to be a brick'n'mortar store is beyond me - you cannot arrange local pickup.

Hmm... That was about 20 years ago... (I was traumatized to the point it took me about 8 years to be talked it again...)
As far as I can recall, they had looked through a bunch of Pro-Photographers portfolios and were expecting a National Geographic level of quality, but got mine instead. Sure, everything was in focus and pretty much exposed correctly, the photos "just didn't have that..." or "didn't look like..." and here was where they got vague and insisted that I just didn't produce "it", whatever they meant by "it".
At this point I reminded them that I had suggested they hire a pro, and had offered to give them my wedding gift in cash early to help towards that end, but it was THEM that insisted that I do it.
These are the same people that'll tell you when they see the photos you like and have displayed : "Wow, you must have a good camera..."
