Hey Wedge, I like the idea... but it doesn't work all the way for me... Use the rule of thirds... Move your subject to one side or the other... I would crop in from the right... That way the water has room in the photo to move...
I would also suggest looking for a more interesting angle... good attempt!!

Hey Davide, I like the idea... But this composition doesn't really work for me... I think it would have been better to isolate the boat out in the water and leave the others out... I feel my eye gets pulled all over the place and never settles... plus the dock is taking up a lot of the left third of the photo..
I would maybe have suggested under exposing just a bit...

I have to disagree with what just about everything everyone said about the shadows and need for adding a fill card to help them..... I really like these self portraits... I like the first one because of the highlights on the couch... The only thing to help the shadow against the wall is move the light more to the side as to make the shadow go out of frame or move away from the bg... You did that when you leaned forward for the 2nd portrait... The only thing I would change about the lighting on the 2nd photograph is lower the light just a bit to give a little catch light in your eyes.. You went to the trouble of creating a nice round soft light.. You might as well see it.. But awesome job.. Love it.. Keep on Shooting!!

I feel like this photo needs a bit more lighting to make it really shine!!!!! I would suggest using a flash camera left gelled warm.. just a little touch of light to bring in more detail in her face and give it some edge... I also think a light a little above the model camera left would be a good option... It would be dramatic but don't put the light to high to create dark circles under the eyes.... But def has potential to be a great shot!!!! Keep on Shooting!!!

lol I did not spell check that.... Thanks for posting the images for me... it would not allow me to do so on the form..
I agree these photos could have more punch... Most of these are straight out of the camera... I am really trying my best to do as much in camera as humanly possible... PP is not my favorite thing in the world... I know that bad...

I would still suggest shooting at angles.. Head can be towards camera but not sholders... We dont want mug shots! Lol but something else I would try is shooting from a low angle to make the person look bigger and stronger!!! It is a look that goes over well!

This may have been answered but i could not find it....
Can you mix different brands of radio flash triggers and recievers that use the smae frequncy (433mhz)? I own a trigger and reciever and am looking to add to it... I can purchase the brand I have but have found some deals on a pack of 4 to 5 recievers for next to nothing on ebay and amazon.....
I know that some things have a certain way of communicating with its own brand but is that the case with the cheaper flash trigger?
I'm using my flashes manually so I'm not worried about auto mode use at all!!!
Thanks for any help!!! Andrew

Your not off track... I would say you could just position your umbrella in a way to not light your background. You could also use the gobo to help control light...
I shoot with bare bulb flash alot, it adds high contrast to a scene and is a small light source when used close to your subject.... I would also suggest moving your subject away from the background because of the way the inverse square law works. i wont try and explain because its something better to watch in a video to understand. Look on youtube to get a better understanding as well as check out The Strobist website!! I have learned so much from David Hobby!!!

If you want the background darker you need to move the lights farther away from it... Or the subjects.... You could also restrict the light to only the subject by using a gobo/flag to only allow light to fall upon your subjects.... If space is limited I would try the gobo.... Or you could also double the sheet to stop as much light from coming though the background!!! Hope that helps!!!

Even more reason to try this with a real brick wall!!! I am old school but I love getting my shots really really close to the end result in camera!!!! I love taking photos not editing them!! I feel it makes the end result better if you can light and expose your image without "fixing" in pp!!!

I used one strobe camera left with red and blue gel on it... I also used a gobo to direct the light where i wanted it and not on the background.... Really pretty simple!!! Right?

I would say the best way to get started is to shoot a bunch of product stuff on your own... I dont have a product tent but I have used a soft box to do similar lighting..... A lighting tent is just a soft box that you put the product in.... I would also say that having one or two speedlight to light it....

I think this shot is pretty cool... I would have prefered a really sharp photo because of the pattern of the brick.... I feel it would look better that way. Also maybe a little side lighting to bring out the texture of the wall and the art work on it.... Even so I think this is a great shot that would be even better with a little work!!

I like this photo. Was this a lit photo? looks like if it was it was on camera? May be wrong though.... I would have maybe tried to get the light away from the camera... I feel it would shoe more texture on the ladders which would give more contrast from the red barn.... But even like this I really like the photo very much.... Thanks for sharing!!!

I love this.... I shot it as an example to a concept that I talked about in someone elses critique! I wanted to get a nice texture and I think I really did that well. Only thing I did in post was bump up the contrast a smidge because of the lens flare. BTW the flare was on purpose....
First, What do you think about this shot... What would you have done? How could I make it better.
And then how was it shot? I want you to reverse engenineer this photo. Tell me how I did it... It is a great practice to get into. I makes learning lighting and it becoming 2nd nature a lot easier.
I will post a setup shot when somone figures it out!!!! Thanks and Keep on Shooting!!!
