The K-5.......the right choice for me!

I dont think you can go wrong with the k5. It is still my favorite camera ever, although i have switched over to a nikon d7000 as part of my future gear plans. The k5 beats the d7000 in comfort usability, build quality, noise handling, size, ergonomics, etc.. Pretty much everything but AF and flash capability. Unfortunately those were 2 of the most important areas for me, hence the switch to nikon. Getting used to the d7000 now, but man i miss the k5

K5 as a Nikon d300s/7000 alternative

I recently switched from the k5 to a nikon d7000, so I have a little experience.

First, while the pentax definitely has the edge in ergonomics and feel, the d7000 is not that far off. Once your brain gets used to a different way of doing things its perfectly fine. There is direct access to all the major shooting controls, and you can set the auto iso up in the nikon to work much like the beloved TAV mode on pentax. If not for the poor placement of the ISO button and the MLU not being tied to the 2 sec timer (c'mon nikon) I would not have anything to complain about. I would say build quality is similar, and im not really sure why someone would say it feels nasty and cheap. Its perfectly fine in that regard.

IQ is a complete draw. I know dxo gave the k5 the slight edge, but i honestly cant tell any difference looking at the files. That was one reason I was comfortable switching to the d7000, because I was already familiar with the awesome sony sensor and what i could do. Lets face it, both of these cameras owe most of what makes them popular and awesome to that sensor, so props to sony.

I am missing the in body stabilization, but not as much as I would have a year ago. ISO is so clean that you can really get a high shutter speed without much noise penalty. Im about to pick up a lightly used AF-s VR 70-200 2.8, so I will have VR on my longest lens so far, where I really need it

Lens choice. If I could afford it I would run 2 systems, keeping a pentax just for the awesome limited primes. If I didnt need the things nikon offers over pentax, those little metal and glass jewels would be all I use. I will probably get back into pentax down the road once I can afford it for my purely personal camera and pick up the limiteds again. That being said, taken as a whole Nikon clearly has the more complete lens lineup, ultrawide to super telephoto and everything in between, including some inexpensive and not so inexpensive primes. They also have much better 3rd party support. I can replicate several of the pentax lenses with the tokina variant. I already have the 12-24 f4, which only cost me $550 vs $760 for the pentax. Tokina zooms seem much better made to me than the pentax versions, which is weird. I will shortly have the tokina 35 2.8 macro as well (though it wont be as nice as the limited the optics are the same), for about half the cost. I also can be sure that every new lens from tamron, sigma, or tokina will be made available to me.

AF. There is no other way to say it, the nikons af system is just better. It is faster, more reliable in low light, and much more sophisticated (3d tracking etc..). The k5 was plenty fast and accurate in single shot in bright light, and much better than previous pentax cameras in low light, but it still could not track in af-c. I did a wedding with the k5. It was not successful in tracking the bride and groom in moderate light walking at a moderate pace towards me as they left the reception, and i did not get any keepers from that setup. I guess i just got tired of waiting for pentax to develop the af system into something equivalent to what the big 2 offer.

Flash system. This was the other area that made me want to switch. The nikon flash system is more reliable and flexible. Better yet, i can now access the benefits of full pocket wizard, radio popper support. I can use the PW ac3 zone controller to easily and quickly control 3 flash groups in either ttl or manual modes without having to touch them. Unless pentax develops a similar system of their own or gains alot of market share I just didnt see this capability making it to the pentax system.

I dont want anybody to think im bashing pentax. The k5 is still my favorite camera ever, and I would still own it if i could afford to. The only reason i switched was because Im trying to go pro, and being the odd man out equipment-wise was getting frustrating. There is no local support for pentax, its harder to rent pentax gear or pick up pentax accessories locally. And when I shoot with someone else it is a virtual certainty that our equipment is incompatible. 3rd party support is just not there, and pentax pricing has gone up so much that its not really the same bargain it was when i got into the system. It just became too much trouble to stick with a system for sentimental reasons when money is at stake. So i have picked up a d7000 to use until the next round of full frame or advanced aps-c cameras roll around, at which point the d7000 would become my backup camera

Item for Sale
kiron 70-210 f4 with zoom lock $35 shipped

Asking Price
$35

Item Location
Vancouver, WA

Item Description
For sale is a Kiron 70-210 f4 with zoomlock to lock in your chosen focal length for focusing (which is nice on these old one touch zoom/focus rings). This lens is quite sharp, has good bokeh, and high build quality like all Kiron products. The lens is in excellent shape optically, mechanically, and cosmetically. It is smaller and lighter (and slower) than the more famous Kiron built Vivitar Series 1 zooms, but is of similar optical quality. Included if the kiron lens pouch and front lens cap (not well designed and tends to fall off easily) and a generic kmount back cap. The lens does not have an a setting, so it operates like a Pentax-M series lens, metering with the green button. Please PM if interested

Is it impossible to get shots like this (link given) with a K5 without stitching?

to get equivalent DOF and framing with a cropped sensor as on a full frame sensor you would need to use the equivalent focal length and 1 stop wider aperture. So if the full frame shot is done at 75mm and f2 (total dof of.15ft at 5ft distance) , you would need a 50mm and f1.4 (total dof of .17ft at 5ft distance) to get roughly the same shot. your aps-c shutterspeed would be faster, but you would have roughly the same framing, perspective (dependent only on distance to subject, not focal length), and dof. There are lots of DOF calculators out there on the internet

Item for Sale
k20d, D-BG2, FA 50 2.8 Macro, Accessories $375

Asking Price
$375

Item Location
Vancouver, WA

Item Description
For sale is a used Pentax k20d with D-BG2 grip, charger, 3 batteries (1 pentax, 2 generic), original packaging, manuals, software.

The camera is in very good shape, I would say excellent. It has around 29000 clicks, so it still has about 2/3s of its shutter life ahead. Everything works as it should. This was my primary camera for a couple of years, then served as a backup to my k5. Most of the photos in the PPG gallery below were taken on this camera. It is very capable, an for low iso work is still as good as anything out there. The camera comes with the D-BG2 battery grip for extra power, extra grip, and convenience shooting portraits.

PENTAX Photo Gallery

As a bonus Im including a FA 50mm 2.8 macro. This lens needs a little explanation, however. I acquired it used some time ago at a used camera show. It apparently has been dropped in the past, doing some damage to the internal focusing gears. The damage is kind of unique and beneficial, because the end result is that the lens now has a permanent 'focus limiter'. The lens autofocuses perfectly in the normal focal range, from infinity down to about 1:4 magnification and so works as a great autofocus 50mm prime. After that you have to force it past a tough spot in the gearing that goes from 1:4 to about 1:2.5 magnification, after which is will focus smoothly again in the macro range (i usually manual focused in this range). It takes amazingly sharp photos and the glass is in great shape, so whatever happened to it has no effect on IQ. I figured it would be tough to sell alone, but might be of interest to someone looking to get into macro on the cheap. It has truly great IQ, and im basically throwing it in for nothing. There are some macros in the PPG gallery above taken with this lens.

If you are interested, please pm me. This package would be really good for someone trying to get into the pentax system on the cheap or as a backup body.

Thanks for looking

(ps, sorry for the crappy cell phone shots)

Item for Sale
Pentax K5 and DA 16-45 $1250

Asking Price
$1250

Item Location
Vancouver, WA

Item Description
For sale is a pentax k5 in like new condition. It was purchased new in late January 2011 and has 4175 shot on the shutter as of today. It has never had the back focus issues that I can tell and is in like new condition (aside from a little dust). On request i can supply a 'stain test' shot. I just took and inspected a shot pointed at a blank wall at f20 and see only a few normal dust blobs except for one very tiny spot that looks a little more solid than the rest, only a few pixels wide and a few pixels from the bottom of the image, visible only at extreme apertures on blank backgrounds. I cant tell if it is a 'stain' but i mention it in the interest of disclosure. It has never affected an image in the last 5 months of shooting and i did not realize it was there until tonight.

Original packing and all camera accessories (strap, battery, charger, etc..) are included.

Also going along with the camera is a used DA 16-45 f4 in decent condition. I am the 2nd owner of the lens, and while you can tell it has been used, everything is in perfect working order both optically and mechanically. The lens is a bonus, and if you want the camera separate the cost would be $1200. I love the camera, especially the high iso and dr of the sensor, but am planning to make a move to Nikon for the greater overall system options. If you are interested please PM.

That sucks for you, but i dont think that it is in any way typical. I have been following the brand on forums for about 5 years now, and this is the first time i can remember anyone posting about having a seal failure. I dont read every post, but if this was anything like a common occurrence you would sure as hell hear about it from the forum screechers. That being said, im sure in about a week it will be all over the web that pentax seals are worthless (ala, the k5 is soft fiasco)

If i were them I would come out with one, if only for the sole purpose of getting rid of one of the knocks against the system as a whole. Anytime you read a system debate on any one of the photography forums, one of the things the canikon crowd bring up is the lack of a modern teleconverter in production by anyone (the others being af tracking, flash system, lack of sports glass). If they already have designs for a 1.4, they should go ahead with it. Just make sure it works well with the sigma 120-300 2.8

My serial is in the 39xxxxx range and it has no stains. It was the 38xxxx range that was heavily affected. Just do the stain check and if its clean dont worry about the serial number. same thing with the FF. Just upgrade it to 1.03 and then shoot a little in low tungsten light. If your photos are focused to your satisfaction (ie on what you intended), then you dont have a problem. Dont let the effects of internet hysteria trouble your mind. Do the reasonable tests, then dont worry about it.
