Does anybody here shoot just film?

I have two cameras, a Pentax Super Program that I shoot mostly color (I really like Fuji 160-S), and a Pentax k-1000 that I shoot mostly black & white through (mostly tri-x, plus-x). My wife has a digital P&S, and occasionally I shoot some pics with it, but usually because I want a pic quick to post to the net (ahhh the instant gratification world we live in). I've thought about a digital SLR, but I have to many other things that require my extra income at the current time (house reapirs/upgrades, daughters college etc.).

shots where taken with a pentax super program, and fuji 160-S color film

This first picture is of Bennett Place in Durham NC. This is the site where Gen. Joseph Johnston surrendered his forces in NC, SC, & GA to William T. Sherman on April 26th, 1865

These next pictures where taken at the Dickson House in Hillsborough, NC. This house served as winter quarters to Gen. Joseph Johnston 1864-1865.

these last two where taken on my way to Raleigh early on April 1st early in the morning at Jordan Lake.

Pentax MZ-50 (ZX-50) with SMC-M lenses

All pentax-K mount lenses should fit, the only difference is the amount of automatic functionality. Pentax-M are fully manual, no automatic focus, or aperture settings. The Pentax-A lenses have an automatic setting for Aperture, but no autofocus. I looked at the specs of the MX/ZX-50, and it mentioned that you will only get correct exposure with an apperture setting of "A", or lens wide open. My take on this would be that you most likely would not want to use lenses that do not have an "A" setting.

LX body sold for...

perhaps the reason for the difference could be noted from this from bdimitrov's pentax k-mount website

QuoteQuote:

The LX is Pentax's most advanced manual focus camera. To begin with, it supports just about every imaginable "pro" feature of its time: mechanical construction, support for fully mechanical operation, extreme reliability and durability, DOF preview, MLU, TTL flash, interchangeable screens, a large system of accessories, etc. But the LX stands out (even by today's standards) as it also features interchangeable viewfinders, a light meter with extreme low-light sensitivity, off-the-film metering (OTF) for ambient exposures, and dust- and moisture-proof seals on every button and dial.

Because of the OTF metering, no exposure adjustment is needed when a different screen or viewfinder is in use, and no viewfinder blind is necessary for long exposures. These advantages paired together with the sophisticated metering turn the LX into the preferred camera for a large variety of applications. For example, the LX is capable of taking extremely long metered exposures and achieving correct exposure even if the lighting conditions change during the exposure. The body is the center of an elaborate photographic system that features interchangeable viewfinders, motors, winders, grips, etc. Exposure compensation is in 1/3 EV steps, and there is an optical aperture readout in the viewfinder.

Prices for used units range between US $300 and US $650, and a CLA starts at US $150.

The gold LX is a special edition body commemorating the 10 millionth Pentax SLR camera. Only three hundred of these 24-carat gold-plated units were manufactured. Each one was sold in a set with the gold SMC 50/1.2 Gold lens.

Sigma 28mm f1.8 input requested

I stopped in my local camera shop this past weekend, and looked through their Pentax lenses. They didn't have hardly any pentax lenses (they said they've all been snatched up since Pentax came out with their digital cameras). They did however have a Sigma 28mm f1.8 with hood & case priced at 175.

This lens had the automtic aperture settings for use on my Super Program, and I'm not sure if it was their autofocus version or not.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? It is a fast lens, but that does not really mean that you'll get great pictures out of this lens. Is the 175 asking price a realistic number? It did look to be in excellent condition, of course I would ask to shoot with it before purchasing.

Here are some pictures of me on a canoe trip on flatwater, and the rig I used. The Camera stayed in the tripod while paddling, and was taken off to shoot mostly. This worked pretty well. On flat water I would not hesitate to take my camera with this rig, on moving rivers and streams, I would take a trip and scout out the difficulty first ... I don't want an impromptu scuba diving trip!

P.S. These where taken by my wife with her little Sony P&S.

Note the dry bag in front of the tripod ... that's where the camera started and ended the trip!

This series was taken in a park nearby, I posted the park plaque first for anyone interested in the history of the park

And this is my little old farmhouse in the country

And last, my fat cat out back thinking she can catch birds at the feeder (also the best shot I've ever taken of this beast)

This is the same wedding taken with B&W film, TMAX 100 & 400 using mostly green filtering

Bride, Groom, and Bride's Mother

The Flower girls ... little angels

My favorite shot - Bride's Mother and Daughter-in-law

The couple

The groom at the welcome dinner

Bride's Mother & Grooms Father

Lesson's learned ... use at least a 135mm lens at these kind of events, most of my photos are from to far away (almost all taken with my 50mm prime). Of course I was not the wedding photographer, just the insane family member with mulitple cameras hanging around my neck.

BTW the wedding photographer was a fantastic pro. Ive been to weddings where the photographer can seem to take center stage, but she, and her assistant really maintained a background presence. They also worked till long in the evening at the reception.

The Bride again

the Groom

Beautiful setting in the orchard on the family farm in Wisconsin

Rehersal/welcome dinner (there was no rehersal) pictures

Bride & Mother

Groom & Brides Mother

cousins, neices & nephews of the Bride

Can you tell I'm partial to the Bride's side ... I'm married to the Bride's Mother!

B&W film, and filters

I'm so glad I asked this question, I've taken delivery of my step-up rings, and my first three filter colors to try with B&W film, Red 25, Green 11, and Yellow 8(K2). I'll be vacationing over the next ten days, but will probably be taking mostly color. I'll be attending my Step-Daughters wedding, and I think I'll want both fast and slow color loaded, which leaves me with no camera left for B&W .... maybe I should have bought another film camera instead of filters!

Did I ever mention, That I Hate Snakes

I have plenty of both spiders and snakes around my house (as evidenced by my Avatar, taken last summer on my front porch). I live on a wildlife refuge, and woods and wild critters abound. I have seen some interesting species around the house. My cat catches northern ringneck snakes, these poor beasts at birth are eaten by about everything including spiders because they are so small. I can't say I like either snakes or spiders, but I do try to give them all their space, and stay with the refuge part of the area I live in.

Waiting for my "new to me" 300mm lens

I thought I'd start with the three. I had put some posts on here about lenses, and was swayed to look for a three first. If it doesn't seem to do the job for me, I'll be looking in the 500-600 range before long.

Waiting for my "new to me" 300mm lens

Well, after looking and wondering how many banks I'd have to rob for a nice Pentax 300mm, I decided instead to buy a cheap 300. I am still shooting film, so a 300 is a 300, not a 450 like you digital guys, and I am seriously hindered in my capability to zoom in on these images by the grain of the film. I have never used a lens bigger than a 210mm and what I know about that lens is "it doesn't get me close enough". I finally decided that a 300mm might not get me as close as I'd like either, so why spend 300-3000 dollars for a nice SMC-A f4, or the cats meow SMC-A f2.8, just to find out I'm still not getting as close as I'd like. I found a Promaster 300mm 5.6 on ebay, and won the bid for a reasonable price of $71.00, and decided to purchase. Hopefully this will allow me to find out if a nicer 300mm is in my future (maybe), or perhaps I should be looking at a 400, or even larger.

I should take delivery on this lens before may vacation begins next Tuesday (schedule is a little tight), so I'll be looking forward to taking pictures in Central Wisconsin, and posting some after the 4th. Thanks to all who have discussed lenses since I joined here in March.

I went to our local "A" league baseball game yesterday, and came away with these.

As you can see it wasn't quite dark. I was hoping to get this shot with the city skyline in the background. You can see the skyline, but not as well as I had hoped. I was shooting with my Super Program at 1/60 sec using my f1.7 50mm lens. I'm afraid I don't remember what aperture setting.

B&W film, and filters

I am shooting B&W 400 & 100 speed TMAX film, and it was reccomended that I think about a red filter. What does filtering do for B&W film, and what filtering should I be looking at. My daughter has a Vivitar Red #26 upstairs that she used shooting IR film, is this something to try. I'm really just looking for any suggestions as all I've ever done with filters is a simple UV filter more for protection of the lens than anything else.

Very nice picture. I was born and raised and lived my whole life in Northern Delaware, and have never been to the Franklin Institute. Ony 1 hour away, and never had a school trip, never chaperoned my kids trips there. Maybe I'll have to take a trip with the wife up there soon.

Nice shots. I can't believe that some are not wearing wetsuits (the water temp could not have been much above low 60's). I am guessing they swim from Sandy Point S.P. to Kent Island? I used to windsurf at Sandy Point back in the day, and can't imagine swimming it!

most likely they are all tilted to the left ... my chiropractor has been constantly working on a head tilt that I have ... guess which way .... that's correct to the left. This is the first time I've noticed it this much, perhaps I should look again at the prints and see how much if any they are tilted. It could be the negative scan also. As for retouching in photoshop, be my guest ... being a film guy, I don't play around much (ever) in digital processing. I don't even usually crop, so any and all suggested enhancements are always welcome, and help me to learn more about the digital end of today's photography.

Tokina AT-X SD 300mm f2.8 (forgot the SD)

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? I have been looking for a 300, and although, I kind of have my eye on the Pentax-A* 300 f4, this is available, and could be almost as good, maybe better. Any input on cost, quality etc would be appreciated. I would be using this with my k1000, and my Super Program, so I'd be particularly interested in how it works in manual focus mode.

it looks like a very difficult dog to shoot, with the dark head and eyes. You did very well, and I really like the stick and attentive look. You certainly have to be happy with it, you don't usually get pictures that good of people, and they understand what it is you want them to do for a pose. Is it a Border Collie?
