Thank you for your encouraging comment. I am pretty happy with the post processing on that image as well. I notice that sometimes it's tough to gauge the "exposure" on the camera LCD when it's really bright outside or really dark... still getting used to the camera and all. Also, seems like photos that look good on the macbook pro don't look good on other uncalibrated monitors... I really need to print out some pictures and see how they look.

Juanraortiz,
What type of setting did you adjust on the picture? It's subtle and I like it... I went a little crazy on my PP and brightened the image quite a bit! I'm curious to print out some of these and compare what the results would be...

I definitely haven't gotten to planning a composition yet and so far have been just trying to capture shots. That will definitely be the next step is trying to improve some pictures. Loving the 50mm 1.7 lens even though the manual focus and getting the right exposure can be a little tiring.

I will definitely have to start with a good exposure... Thanks for the tip on vignetting since using this helped draw the attention without changing the colors too much (the previous edits slightly changed the colors of the petals which I did not want too much off). Below is the edited picture of bumping the exposure (+3), a little bit of contrast/brightness, lightening the saturation, and then the vignette. Thanks again! |

Done in photoshop... usually, I just use the iPhoto edits for quick edits but I took a little longer on these ones.

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions. Unfortunately, I didn't take the picture in RAW but even adjusting the JPG has done quite well... I'll need to look up the technique on color dodging (researching this...), but so far the changes with exposure/contrast/saturation seem to have made quite a difference. Below are two copies after PP. IMO the "whiter" version is truer and keeps the mood a little bit more but I like the saturated one as well... |

I just got the SMC M 50mm 1.7 lens and was playing around in low light conditions. I took the picture below underexposed on purpose to try and capture the mood... does it work for you guys or would you dismiss it as an underexposed image? |

Was walking down suburbia looking for interesting pics to take and ended up with this result:
I submitted it to this flickr group and thought you all might be interested to check out the group itself (I'm sure other members have a lot of interesting pictures to submit): Flickr: Colour Chart |

I'm using the K200D w/ the DA II kit lens. I have the High-ISO Noise Reduction Setting to 3 Weak. I was reading somewhere here that the in-camera Noise Reduction works better than Post Processing. I guess I'll experiment a little with it off and weakest to see how much different it is. Thanks for your observation. I will be looking into getting a monopod as well - I have a tripod but don't really take it around unless i'm doing a solely photography outing. If the monopod is small enough, I might take it around with me more often.
BTW, your shots are very clear! what aperture and lens did you use for those?

I guess I am not really sure of what criticism... first time posting a photo up here. The comments so far are helpful to me.
In terms of the photo quality - it's the full jpeg size on flickr. Maybe the pro account will allow for a larger version of the photo... it does look pretty low-res in 1024x768.

I wanted some constructive criticism on this shot... The conditions were VERY hasty - we had just ran to the stop, the cable car was starting to roll, so I put the F - 3.5 and ISO 1600, zoom out to 18mm and snapped away, hoping for no blur. It's not the sharpest picture but I quite like it... for some reason, the noise from the ISO doesn't bother me as much as I'm not going for the sharpest pictures... what do you think? |

Thanks for the information. I looked into past links about the split focus and the katzeye product. Definitely not cheap and probably not worth the upgrade for me. I guess I'll keep my eyes more on the autofocus versions when choosing older lenses albeit more expensive. :(

Thanks for the replies. I was so busy trying to focus on the image that I didn't realize the information on the viewfinder was also getting adjusted. D'oh! I have mine now set to 1 step in from the right and seems okay. I guess the K200D camera just seems harder to focus manually? In the old 35mm SLRs it seemed a little easier - this seems of concern when considering manual focus lenses (pentax smc -m) for this dSLR. Have you guys had any issues with this?

Hello,
I have a K200D camera with the kit lens. So far I've been using the Diopter all the way to the right but am wondering if this is a good setting for me (I want to be able to rely on manual focus more). According to the manual and other resources, it says to just move it back and forth until it feels right (after auto-focusing). However, it's really hard to tell the difference for me between the middle setting and all the way to the right (feels like being at the optometrist and switching lens back and forth) . I have 20/20 vision, so am just wondering what the regular adjustment should be? The diopter goes from -1.5 to +2.5 and seems to have 9 settings( I would think the middle would be neutral but am not able to verify) ... what does everyone here have their setting on (clicks from left/right)?

All,
Thank you for the replies and welcomes. I'm really excited to get into photography. The learning curve and the amount of information and patience required is a little overwhelming. But I'm hoping to capture some great shots soon. I got the book from Amazon on the camera, and so far it has been quite useful. I've been looking through a lot of the forums as well. The monthly and weekly contests and mini-games are way cool. Hoping to participate sometime as well. I think my first lens maybe the Pentax SMC A 50mm 1.7. Any suggestions for other cheaper lens?
Thanks All. |

Hello All,
Just wanted to introduce myself... I've had a K200D for a little while now and finally have found the time to discover all the rich features of the camera and dSLRs in general. I found this forum while looking for a different lenses available for Pentax dSLRs. There definitely seems to be a lot of rich information here which I'm excited about! The only other forum I've used and have been addicted to is vwvortex.
I've started a flickr account just to keep a showcase (Flickr: prajno's Photostream ). Would love any comments from you guys. I just bought the David Busch's Pentax K200D guide on Amazon as well (Amazon.com: David Busch's Pentax K200D Guide to Digital SLR Photography: David D. Busch, Matthew Bamberg: Books ).
My immediate goals are to get a new lens (I'm eyeing the SMC Pentax M 50mm 1.7) and also to start getting comfortable with the Manual setting mode.
Cheers,
Prajno
PS. Thought a picture from SF might be appropriate :) I am still getting used to the kit lens :( |
