For sharpness - S-M-C Takumar 50mm f/1.4

For everyday - S-M-C Takumar 28mm f/3.5

What's great about the 28mm is the focal length is around 45mm on a crop so quite 'standard' and setting the aperture to f/8 and the focus ring to the red numbers (35ft iirc) means it'll focus from 5 feet to infinity so it's great for just pointing 'n' shooting without worrying about if the shot will be in focus. It's a great feature.

Following on from this:

From the same 'bunch' of flowers. Gotta love nature, isn't it amazing what a bit of sunshine can do? :)

Straight from the sensor, no PP except a resize and jpeg conversion.

And thank you Richard and Mel. Great tips, I'll try them out soon!

If, like me, you're constantly looking at primes which for some reason are getting more expensive the longer you look and are considering a Tamron SP 180 f/2.5 35th Anniversary Edition you've reached the height of your addiction potential.

Or atleast I hope so as I don't like feeling poor.

UV or skylight filter?

I personally don't. They will always cause a drop in image quality.

If you do buy one, only use it when you think you need it, such as a volitile environment.

Instead, invest in a hood. You won't lose any IQ, it'll stop flare, it'll protect the front element and it's cheaper than a good filter.

Indeed, the advantage to having the mirror so far back on crop body EOS camera's is they're compatible with almost all old maunal lenses without any adverse effect on image quality (ironically this doesn't include Canon FD mount lenses)

Using old AI/AI-S Nikkor lenses on a Canon body sends shivvers down both hardcore Nikon and Canon users. The look of digust is only marginally better than the results you get. ;)

The EF 50mm f/1.8 is good optically for the price, but yeah some people think it's some second-coming of jesus or similar. It's really not worth the praise it gets IMO, good for dipping your toe though.

The 135mm f/2.5 is a lovely lens (great looker too with that mahoooosive front element), but I've also heard that's quite soft wide open too. It's equally as sharp at the 135mm f/3.5 at the same stops though, so it's up to you if the extra expense is worth it for the 'brighter' lens.

Image stablisation. Like SR but it's in the lens, not the body.

Yes I do use tak's on it, using an AF confirm adapter. Works excellently on Av mode with some exposure compensation.

A Canon 50mm f/1.4 would have cost me £280, I picked up a mint Tak' 50mm f/1.4 for £60 including shipping. That's less than what I sold my Canon 50mm f/1.8 for. :)

The original preset Takumar 200mm f/3.5 had 18 blades.

Super's and S-M-C's have 6.

What Fish eye

15mm wont be fishy at all on a crop sensor I'm afraid. It'll just look like a wide angle lens with bad distortion.

You'll want a 4.5mm to get a true 180 degree on a crop, or at the very least an 8mm such as a Peleng which in terms of fish eye prices is no money at all.

^That's wonderful, Richard?

At a guess, could you tell me how far away you were from the butterfly when you took the shot?

I plan on doing some macro with my 200mm + tubes when the weather suits and a couple tips would be much appreciated.

Well, I have been looking in to *ist Ds models second hand to use as a back-up body and when I don't want to lug the weight of my 20d (just under 2KG with the 200mm) around. Imagining the 50mm on one makes me feel quite dizzy with excitment. :o

Thank you for the welcomes. :)

the high iso/low noise conundrum

In certain siuations I find noise can add to a photograph. Such as in band photography at some seedy back alley club (or rather, if that's the portrayal you want to give accross to the viewer). It also makes for an excellent 'film grain' effect when used in b&w.

Fortunatly the 20D has excellent noise handling so 1600 is very usable, 3200, on the over hand, isn't though in my experience.

I do. Only because my tak's have tainted the build quality of my 18-55mm IS lens therefore currently refuse to use it.

Don't get me wrong, it's sharp at optimal apertures and the IS can be a life saver but the wobbly focus ring and 'sticky'/undampened zoom ring is shockingly terrible.

Damn you Asahi Pentax and your tank-like lenses. :D

Great shots there, especially the last.

Been meaning to dip my toe in to an old Tamron SP for a while now.

Not sure if you have, but the only problem I find with using an excellent macro prime is they can be too sharp, if that even exists ;)

Hmmm, Takumar 135mm f/1.8's exist. Good luck finding one though, I've seen more teeth on hen's.

Those shot's are lovely, truely inspiring in my opinion. Wish I could afford the 1Ds MkIII he's using let alone the lens as well.

Agreed on the Tak' 28mm f/3.5. Very, very sharp even wide open, wonderfully saturated colours and contrast straight from the sensor.

I love mine and I use it as my 'kit' lens as it has a focal length of just under 45mm on a 1.6 crop sensor. Made even better by me getting it for less than their average value due to the seller not really listing it correctly.

If you want something relatively wide and fast, you could try and source a Tak' 35mm f/2. They're quite rare though, and due to a radiated element is prone to yellowing. But that's reversible with a UV bath.

I also own a S-M-C 200mm f/4 which is sharp wide open, 'tak' (;)) sharp at f/8, and maybe wider than that, not had chance to test it thoroughly. It can be a bit too long for some people though, I'd love to try out a 105 2.8.

Here's the first shot I took with the 200mm at f/8 to test sharpness and bokeh. No PP except a resize.

Hi there.

Been an avid reader of the forum for a couple month now, but have decided to pop my head over the fence so to speak. :)

Currently own a Pentax ME 35mm with an M 50mm f/1.7 which, if I'm honest, I never use. But it makes for a nice shelf piece!

I've also started a collection of S-M-C Takumar lenses to use on my Canon 20D DSLR, currently 'rolling' with a 28mm f/3.5, 50mm f/1.4 and 200mm f/4. All of which are near mint, I often forget these lenses are 30+ years old.

I hope I can offer my advice and opinions on here if they're required. Seems like quite a friendly community.

Chris.

Hello there, I'm new to the forum (although I've been reading with interest for a couple months) so thought I'd post some pics with the Tak' lenses I've acquired over the last few weeks.

S-M-C 50mm f/1.4 various stops but all below f/4:

S-M-C 28mm f/3.5 wide open:

S-M-C 200mm f/4 wide open:

All on a Canon EOS 20D with af confirm adapter.
