Focus screens for ME Super

What screen would you get that would be better is the question.

The ME Supers viewfinder is one of the brightest I've seen and has the split ring to help, and finding a replacement that would be significantly better and easy to install seems pretty unlikely to me.

Rust lens mount on a Pentax MX

The mount from an MV1 (for certain) and probably the MV (and possibly other M series) fits on it as well. You could ebay one of those for cheap most likely.

But as others suggest, I'd just take it off and clean it.

The way I learned (and thought pretty much everybody else did, too) was to just use a bottle opener on the canister to pop it open in the dark room.

It's interesting that the Hp5+ seems a lot warmer tone wise compared to the Tri-X. I don't think I've really had that same experience, though I develop both in hc-110. Any thoughts on this?

Uh Oh! My lens is stuck!!

But if it's just that the adapater is stuck in the k-mount, why would the lens be spinning (unless it was glued and broke loose. Then assuming the lens is spinning shouldn't it still come out of the adapter? The anticipation is killing me here.

The ME super should definitely advance and be able to fire at it's default speed of 1/125 without a battery.

Don't try to force the winder, I would open the back and very gently try to push the shutter curtain down with your fingernail. In my experiences with multiple ME Supers this will put the mirror back down and let you advance. If it works the next you try to fire the shutter is a different story. You never know though, sometimes it just needs a good restting of the firing sequence.

customs, x-rays, airplanes, ohh my!

I've travelled a couple of times recently (with b&w film) and had no problem even after it went through multiple x-ray machines.

Lately though, I have been asking the people by the detector if I can pass it around, and they've all obliged without problem. They might give you a little bit of a hard time if the speed is under 800, but telling them you don't want to risk it seems to do the trick. Takes a few extra minutes because they go through them and sometimes do a little swab chemical test.

A related funny story: I was traveling with an old russian medium format folder camera, and I got stopped during the security check point. They pulled the camera out of my bag, in it's leather case and were telling me that I was supposed to take all electronics out of my bag, etc. I tried to explain that there was nothing electronic about it, but they still insisted on doing a full check out of it. The puzzled looks on their faces as they tried to figure out how it operated were with the price of the time.

Developing tanks

I have some patterson plastic reels and tank, which I like for 35mm but loading 120 can sometimes be an exercise in patience. One positive aspect of plastic that I've found over steel is that it's easier to tell when the loading is going wrong because the ratcheting motion won't take in the film if it's off somewhere (generally).

I haven't tried 120 in steel, but I am considering it. I feel like it would be easier to clip it on to the bottom of the reel than trying to load it in to the top of a plastic reel. Any insights?

Pentax MX question

Despite what people seem to be saying, it is easy to remove. You just have to pop off the little metal cover that sits in the bottom part of the shoe, should basically just lift off. This will reveal four little screws, remove those. The shoe then lifts right off the camera, leaving a flat slope, but also four screw holes and one bigger hole where a metal contact comes through to connect to the shoe.

I dont see why you couldn't tape over it (or whatever) it's just some wiring that completes a circuit, there's no juice going through it if you don't have a flash on, nor do I see how it would mess with the meter circuitry unless you cause some sort of weird grounding situation, but even then...

Quick edit: I will say, though, that if you don't get those holes light tight it could very well mess with your light readings.

K1000 fungus question...

I had a chinese k1000 that had nearly the same looking thing. It is actually damage to the pentaprism (not exactly sure from what) so there seems to be no way of cleaning/fixing it beyond replacement.

It's not terribly difficult to replace the prism, though, if you have another junker with a good one. You need to remove the top plate, loosen a set screw, and remove the spring held retaining clip to the prism and it lifts right out. If you have that detailed k1000 service manual that's floating around, it has more than enough instruction.

Buying a "not Asahi" Pentax K1000

I've had both a metal Asahi logo (made in Hong Kong) and a newer all plastic one. I still have the metal one. The plastic one worked fine but felt significantly cheaper and less durable.

I really think that for 70 you could find a better deal on a metal k1000 or even a better body. Keep an eye on craigslist and ebay.

Clean ME focus screen...

The focus screens are notoriously hard to clean, I'm not sure the best procedue -- maybe ultrasonic bath in DI water which would (obviously) require removal.

I learned the hard way (luckily on a junker mv-1) that trying to use isopropyl and a lint-free wipe doesn't work. You can't buff out any marks or residue left behind from whatever cleaning solution you use. So, I'd say the best option is to live with it, or buy another ME for cheap, or change it yourself (which isn't that difficult necessairly, but if you haven't done it before would take way more time than it's worth to just get a new camera).

Corrosion on a Spotmatic

As mentioned above, vinegar is a good way to clean off corrosion from batteries.

It sounds like you have the battery compartment opened already so you might not need to worry about soaking the whole plate, but it would be worth taking the bottom plate off just to see how the rest of the wiring under there looks (and how desperate a CLA might be). In any case, I'd just clean the metal contacts with some vinegar and fine grit sand paper if need be.

For what it's worth I had a SPII that had the battery door sealed by a leaky battery and a few hours soak in vinegar and I had it opened. I cleaned the contacts and the meter was spot on.

Well, if you are somewhat inclined to diy repair browse around this site, might give you an idea of what is going wrong, at least:

Self-repair for film rewind winder K-1000

I haven't tried putting a screwdriver between the body and latch -- might work, just be careful not to scratch or bend anything.

If you can still see the threaded part of the rewind shaft (where the rewind knob screws on to) you can just use some small pliers/tweezers/whatever to pull it back up, and then pull it up enough to open the back.

If you totally lost that in the body, you can make a makeshift opener with a paper clip. Just give it a short 90 degree bend on one end that you can fit down the rewind shaft hole and move it around while pulling up -- you'll be able to find the latch mechanism eventually.
