Wow, great shot and thanks for all that technical info.
Just shows which improvements were made with lenses and cameras in the last 25 years. 25 years ago you could have fooled me by saying it was shot with the Hubble space telescope.

That last shot in front of the stands is my favorit since there is a feel of speed in it.
Thnx for posting them.

I can't believe Pentax/Ricoh will not demand from the testers that those preproduction untis have to be returned to Pentax/Ricoh

Congrats on your new K5.
One other major benefit you have with the K5 is tha fact that it is the first Pentax K series where you could actually use the AF-C. This in combination with the 7 fps might help you to get some bird shots which would be hardly impossible to get with the K20.

Great shot and excellent timing.
Knowledge of the game and the players is mandatory to get these kind of shots and a little bit of luck is a great help. Like you I also like to shoot sports but I don't want to get home with 1000+ shots of a match or sporting event. A short fast burts is needed but you don't have to shoot a burst with every throw of every bowler.

The DA* 16-50 F2.8 is 595 gram and the famous FA* 28-70 F2.8 is 800 gram. I don't expect the new 24-70 will be lighter or comparable in weight to that 16-50.

This is Daphne Schippers a few years ago when she was an heptathlon athlete. Since 2014 she opted to do sprint only and won both 100 & 200 meters at the European championship. This year she has choosen to do the sprint only after she ahd a couple of injuries when doing some parts of the hepathlon. She wil compete at the world championship in august 2015 and I'm afraid I'm not gonna see here anymore at the smal atlethics meeting which is held every year in Eindhoven where I took this picture.
A few equestrian pictures since I haven't seen any of them is this topic sofar.
This is Julia Roberts from Austria
This is Piergiorgio Bucci from Italy |

Nice to see the complete series Kerrordown. I just realised you're shooting with an "old" K20D and not a K5 or K3 which make it even more impressive.
Only with the introduction of the K5 usage of AF-C became more or less usefull for action shots. On the K7 I tried the AF-C a couple of times but was not very successfull. Did you use the K20D in continues shooting mode or are these single shots?

A fine series to watch Heinrich. Overhere I can only watch bears in the zoo, so its a pleasure to see pictures of them in their natural habitat.
As far as i know from watching NG you should not get to close to a mama bear with cubs. Did you shot those from the safe environment of your car?

Wow, great pictures Heinrich. I thought badgers normally would not come out during the day but only at night.
Anyway, luck was on your side this time and patience finally paid out.

The Pentax 55-300 is fine for outdoor sports but is way to slow for indoor sports like gymnastics. The poorly lit indoor arena's require a fast lens like the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 so you can use a fast shutter speed. The high ISO preformance of the K5 will also be a big help. If you want to track a gymnast coming at you with the K5 AF-C you may be disappointed with the results. Compared to Canikon AF the Pentax AF lacks predictive AF possibilities. In the K3II this seems to have been upgraded, but sofar I've not seen real test results from the knowledgable sport shooters overhere.
When it comes to shooting sports knowledge of the sport is about 75% to get a good shot. If you know the sport you can anticipate where and when the action will take place and that's why you can even use those old manual lenses as suggested here..
Good luck and hopefully you will succeed in getting some nice gymnastics shots in the near future.

If your K5II works fine with respect to shooting soccer it should also be capable to shoot gymnastics since that sport is easier to track. I don't know which lens you use for soccer and which one for gymnastics but if you've got a lens with a fast AF facility it should be no problem.

Last weekend the Grand Prix Eindhoven was held so I put the K5 and some lenses in my back and went to the location which was just 5 minutes away. It is an international event with riders from various countries. So for the fans of horses here are some pictures.
1 - Marc Houtzager from The Netherlands
2 - Doron Kuipers from The Netherlands, who won the event after a 7 rider jumpof
3 - Lars Nieberg from germany
4 - Piergiorgio Bucci from Italy
5 - Piergiorgio Bucci from Italy
6 - Angelica Augustsson from Sweden
7 - Wouter Devos from Belgium
8 - Julia Kayser from Austria
9 - Albert Zoer from The Netherlands |

Great series John and just shows that people with skills and reasonable/good tools will outperform the non skilled with their "perfect" tools.
I do agree with wibbly that given your position you could have tried to take some panning shots with lower shutter speeds. With the skills you show in this series I'll bet you would have come up with some stunning shots.

Fireworks the easy way. Use a tripod, M mode, F8, 0.5-1 second and ISO 200. Don't use AF, but MF . Use anything between 40-100mm lens and set distance to 10m or so. The F8 will make sure everything looks pretty sharp.
