Thanks for the help folks. Does anyone know when the 16-50mm D* is likely to be available in the UK? And how much it's likely to cost? I have a max budget of £1000 and I can source the K10D body and and 16-45mm combo for £800 which leaves a bit of room for maneouvre.

Hi folks, this is my first post here so go easy on me. I've been using a Fujifilm F-11 compact for the last year to take mainly landscapes. As my skills have grown so the shortcomings of my compact have become magnified. Anyway, time is here to buy my first DSLR and from all I've read I'm looking at the K10D.
What lens would you recommend for all-round use? The vast majority of my shots will be landscapes but I do need it to be useful for foreign trips. I was thinking of the 16-45mm Pentax lens as it seems well regarded, but I'm wondering if it's really enough at the long end. 45mm translates to 68mm in old money, right? If so, that's maybe not long enough.
There's a bit of a rush on as my wife & I are going to Corsica in 5 weeks time for our 10th anniversary. I'd really like to have the camera up & running before then.
