K-x Autofocus ..... Defect or imagination ...

I also had a Fuji, a Finepix s7000. Much older than yours. It is also razor sharp. Even from 1 cm distance made brilliant macro pics. Only concern was the slow AF. But if compared with Pentax K-x in live-view mode, the good old S7000 is many times faster. (Sometimes i feel pity why not choosing the finepix S100Fs instead). Plz do not throw stones over me. I like my Fuji is I like my Pentax. I am a Pentaxian as this is my 5th slr. And yes, it is nonsense to compare apples and pears.
My former K-m had the same - slight - focusing problems too. might be because of lens quality. Anyway, my best lens is an old manual 55mm. It takes time to select aperture, speed and focus, like in the good old days, but the result is much nicer.

is K-X Live View quirky about focusing?

I agree. Live view is a real help in MF mode.
But in another issue on this forum there was a sollution.
go in MENU > then 3rd page > live view > autofocus mode > select the last option, which shows the 11 field. Then you press once and it makes a blind shutter. After that you find the focus is done. It is a bit strange and noisy, and also takes time but at least you can be focused. As live view works in passive focus, in low light it can be hopeless to focus in.
I have changed K-m for K-x because video and live-view. But I must say that any soap-shaped cameras or bridge cameras are much - much faster than Pentax live-view AF. In fact is there any other camera with such a slow (and noisy) AF?

I made recently a short clip in a church tomb (in complete silence) and when I saw it at home I was shocked to hear such a loud background noise that everybody asked about it.
click this youtube clip I talk about.

You Tube

(i posted it unlisted not to harm Pentax, but this background noise is truly unacceptable.)
Please do not make remarks on movie quality. This short clip was made only to demonstrate the noise made in sudden movements and in pour light. :(

KX Live view focus issue

Thank U. I have missed this feature in the menu. I will use this in the future as well.
I can say that the live view of my K-x is probably one of the worst in the market. My 8 years old fuji s7000 bridge camera was slow in AF (that is why I had to change to DSLR, but compared with my pentax its live-view was fast like hell.

My K-x also works in live-view like a coffee-grinder. And as I move it the noise is more disturbing. This makes video recording in silence quite spoiled.
And sorry. I have checked Nikon. And there is no noise in live-view

In my opinion my K-x shows very under exposed pictures.

I have a K-x. Before I had a K-m. They both underexpose. Actually I check histogram and a +1 generally solves the problem. What I have found was that underexposure is less if AE metering is in multi segment.
What bother me more is pour contrast. I solve most of the pic exposure problem with batch auto-contrast with the whole file of shots. Of course this is done only with mass jpeg pictures.

1 month of experience with Pentax K-x white

By the way. Since my first camera was a Russian Vilia - from 1980, I had to learn how to set and compose each shot. I must say that ten years ago i could put 37 photos out of a film of 36 because I had to think twice before pushing the button.
Nowadays i shot hundreds of pics in one afternoon and can easily delete the main part of my shots. Do you remember the feeling of making pics with old film cameras, and waiting to fill up a roll, take it to the shop and waiting for it again to be processed. Perhaps after long weeks you have realized if the moment was captures well or not.
Nowadays we have HiTech gadgets and we complain about features that 5 years ago were unknown. My first camera has manually operated, we had to step the distance between us and the subject, we had to watch inside the film box to get the right speed / aperture ratio. Therefore a good picture had a real value at that time.
Before saying I am oldfashioned I also appreciate all the functions that came with K-x even if I will never use most of them in my entire life (just like the mobile phones which came with lots of senseless applications.
So, I believe the red dot is helpful but not necessary.

Hy Hin
After reading your review, I have sold my old K-m and got yesterday a white K-x.
The bodies are, indeed, the same, except the meaning of some keys and two holes for speaker and mic.phone. Although I was afraid of the white color, it looks great. Anyway, my wife will happily use it after K-8 will be mine.
The difference between K-m and K-x is inside, and is really big. I must say that I had to read again the booklet to discover those lots of extra gadgets.
In a couple of days I can share my experiences of K-x, compared with K-m (after 6000 pics made with it).

Poll: Why did you buy a Pentax DSLR?

hy
i am new on this forum and just get a k2000.
I had previously a mz50, which was broken. because i had some lenses one of my friend bought on the flomarkt a MZ-5 and also an NSXn with a lot of lenses.
In digital I have used for 6 years a fuji S7000 bridge camera. Very useful, made over 30.000 pics but I have missed the speed and the field depth.
I have chosen to by a digital DSRL and spent over half a year on the forums to choose one:
my options were:
Fuji S100 - brigde camera with full of gadgets and features
Fuji S5Pro - because I was satisfied with fuji and because a good price pro camera with extreme capabilities
then came Pentax in the view: k200, or K20
I have spent one month in deciding next to K7
Finaly I have chosen the small and cheap K-m (k2000)
Why Pentax, - simply because I had too many lenses.

I have read a lot of stuff about this camera with lots of pros and cons.
Let me tell you something:
My first camera was a Vilia (russian gear) in 1980. Fully manual. I have learned the meaning of every aspect (diaphragm, shutter speed, Iso setting. Then came my first SRL, the MZ50. I have posted 37 pics in my album out of the 36 film. You know what I mean? That I have made a picture only when it was the right moment and all were perfect and I was proud of my pics.
Than came the digital mania, Shooting all day long and, believe me, perhaps 1 out of 100 pics deserves to be shown in public. Pocket or bridge cameras simply can not make quality (except some nice macro pics made by 1 cm focus.
I could not wait and also not afford a full frame, but a good field depth and little bit faster shutter is just enough for me.
This camera has so many gadgets that if you can not make a reasonable pic with it you should quit making pictures.
We are so stupid and believe all the crazy bla-bla written on dpreview, or other big page.
I am sure that one out of million pics deserves to be shown, and printed in such a quality wich needs better performance that the cheapest camera on the market.
Are you printing your pics as big as a table-cloth? Of course not.
Are you spending a lot of time in setting up the camera before every shot? - Of course not
Are you using the green position in most cases? - Of course yes
Do you use maximum res and jpeg quality, however you will post the pics only on picasa or my-space - yes, of course.
So, we are the slaves of technology and if we can not make a reasonable picture with any of the available DSRL cameras in the market, then we are really stupid
So, I am satisfied with this small K2000 and i am convinced that my pics will not betwice better with a K-7, or even a Nikon D3x
