An old film find...

Here's a small story of something you don't see everyday...

Yesterday I went with a friend who's interested in old cameras to see a display of unused examples in a shop downtown.
After playing around with various dusty cameras we discovered one slightly rusty fold-out 6x9 camera was still loaded with film.
After a brief stunned silence, there was a unanimous decision that the film had to be shot.

We guessed the exposure based on ASA100 and opened it afterwards to find we were just about right.

I have no idea how old the Kodak Verichrome pan film is or if it will work at all.. but will find out within a few days.

Extraordinary 18 minutes of images and comments by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Made by the ICP in 1973.

I have my own copy, but it pops up online every now and then before disappearing for copyright reasons.

Finally got the K-7 yesterday, and - in about as close to a religious experience I've had - found it actually works perfectly. So far.
Had brief mildly warm feelings (perhaps a 'mild thaw' is a better description) towards IR Little before reading the repair job sheet.

As background, last time I received the camera I was a bit shocked to find it packaged in a box with only a couple of pieces of screwed up newspaper to cushion it. I'd sent it to them swathed in bubble-wrap. And, as I said in an earlier post, within about a minute the AF switch was clearly totally screwed. I made it very clear that it was either not fixed properly (again...) or damaged in transit.

So for the fifth time IR had sent (or tried to send and recalled my camera back), over a 10-month repair odyssey, this was noted in capitals on the job sheet:

You can't make this stuff up.

Maybe this was for the benefit of the insurance company, or from the technicians trying to cover up ineptitude, or just the usual level of IR Little service thinking, I'm not sure.

If I have any camera issues in the future I'm going to utterly refuse to have anything to do with this company.

Well done Class A for getting the issue raised with Ricoh. Here's hoping CR Kennedy perhaps pick it up. They have always been great to deal with in my experience...

Revisited Experience

I posted a series a few weeks back about many thousands of images I had re-discovered on a hard-drive, mostly taken around 2009. After finding even more I kept adding to that thread. I found even more the other day (really need to get my files in order) and have selected my ten favourites to post together.

Rediscovered

A few of the images I have edited after finding thousands of images from 2009-2010 I had never looked at after shooting, or had passed over and never re-visited. My files are a bit of a mess and there are possibly around 10,000 files I've barely looked at or haven't seen at all after taking the image.

Wanderings: A Portfolio

Having just finished a major website revamp, a re-edit of many photos and a ground-up reselection of images I show, I thought I'd share a portfolio of images. These represent some of my own favourites I've pulled out from the ones that made the cut from the past 5-6 years in which I've been taking photographs.
Thanks for having a look.

The City by the Sea

I'm currently working on an audio-visual presentation for a major photography talk next year (and also partly out of fun and interest). I've put together a series of images, over the past few years, which I'm calling 'The City by the Sea'. These images are an examination of my home city, Wellington - New Zealand, in terms of both the geography and connection people have the waterfront and our ocean surrounds. The first image is not mine, but one I found to show you a little overview of the city-central before my series of 20 images.

Thanks for viewing.

Misc A Step Back: 13 Recent Photos

A Step Back

I recently realised that many of my favourite photographs from the past few months are not particularly 'classic' street photographs, if there is such a thing. Though still concerned with composition, timing and form, many don't include people as a main element; and if they're included at all, people are usually just shapes or silhouettes. This is no conscious change and no doubt I'll go back to photographing people as the primary subject, but I found it interesting. I put together thirteen recent images that fall outside a classic view of street photography. You couldn't call them landscape or anything else really, but then trying to fit things into genres feels a bit pointless.

Why? Well I'm not sure I have a better claim than anyone else. But photography is my number one love, and as a young photographer I plan on photographing as much and as long as possible, and to as high a 'level' as I get - we'll see. I used to have a 21mm and loved it, but it was stolen. A real shame as it was a big purchase and I'd planned on keeping it indefinitely. I'm a student and don't have much in the way of spare cash, and I simply can't afford another lens and that means I currently have nothing wider than thirty mm, which is a bit limiting for landscapes here in New Zealand.

I just photographed this one yesterday. I usually leave my shots for a few weeks to see if I still approve of them, but I do like this one of a coffee table in my lounge. The light reflecting from a glass-covered building down the road gave it some interesting geometry. I don't take many photos that are lacking living elements either.

But I don't always use a lens as if I want the maximum possible sharpness and contrast, I use it to get the feeling and effect I want.

In fact I'm entirely against the notion that lenses should only be used in ways that yeild the highest possible 'image quality', by which I mean technical quality, not real quality.

Young and Fast
A series on the 2011/12 summer New Zealand Toyota Racing Series.

Twenty-one drivers from thirteen countries - almost all aged in their late teens or early twenties - competed for the title and one of only two Grand Prix outside of Formula One.
With it comes a foot on the ladder of a racing career.

(My) Life in Colour

This is some of my personal series on friends and family. Some is a Holga 120N (cropped), some a Holga 135BC, and some digital. I won't say which is which as I think it's hard to tell and unnecessary. The 'retro' look is popular at the moment, with hipstermatic and instagram, but I think it is often used in lieu of goof composition or timing. However it can give a personal, warm feel, and so I have used film and film conversions in this series on friends and family. There are several digital images I'm still going back through but here is it so far.

Hopefully it's OK to post this here - my own website is the only place I could upload this OK to show people I know, and I thought I'd share.
Capa is a favourite photojournalist and a legendary photographer for all time, and I found this video quite touching.

Short Henri Cartier-Bresson film online

I think this film was on Vimeo a little while ago but was removed, so I'd try to watch it reasonably soon. It's pretty short (18min) but it is very, very good. I believe the ICP made it in the 70's, with just Cartier-Bresson speaking (recorded at a talk he gave there I vaguely recall?) over a slideshow of his images.
