In Capture One Pro the clarity adds microcontrast … or reduces it. I use it in both directions. Too much of it and the image won‘t look natural anymore, more artificial.

Here are some examples of what the clarity enhancement setting does. Note that this adds some processing time and slows down your burst rate, so it's not something I'd recommend using unless you are looking to avoid post-processing.

It basically does the same thing as auto levels in photoshop, but with a bit more contrast. You can see that in the examples above :)
