Somehow I came across this guys blog and it seems as if he has a hate love type of relationship with Pentax. I'm sure many of you are familiar with him, but how I have missed his blog over so many years I dont know. I've loved Pentax cameras, faults and all over the years but the sad reality is I wonder about the future of the company and his blog really seems to try and slap people in the back of the head yelling WAKE UP through the screen at you. Its the first time I've realized that Pentax may be becoming the new Minolta of my time and is doomed to be known only as Ricoh in a few years to come, as it has already started to happen on the web (There is no home Pentax site anymore). I was really excited about the prospect of getting a new k5ii with a couple of lenses ( they have double rebates going on now),but now after reading his blog it certainly took the excitement and flushed it down the toilet. Now I'm left holding an empty bag not knowing what to do.

A colorblind photographer?

I remember reading something somewhere concerning WWII and various classified techniques utilized to help the allies win the war. This included the use of American native indians for communication that didn't need to be encrypted or whatever as their ancient language was unknown by the Japanese, and only a select few indians in the U.S. could still speak it fluently. No matter how hard they tried, the Japanese couldn't figure it out. Another technique was also to have a colorblind soldier on board a bomber as somehow they figured out this soldier had little difficulty in being able to see right through camoflauge and spot various large weapons where anyone else couldnt see it. I found that facinating and began to wonder if the world would seem much different if I wasn't colorblind. Matter of fact, I recall starting elementary school and having to read the color on the side of a crayon before using it on assignment where a picture would be divided up in certain sections and were numbered according to what color was supposed to be used for that section. For me though of course that was normal and I didnt know any different. Hell, I didn't even know it until around 8th grade when I was given one of those standard school ocular assessments they did waaaay back then,

New K30, great pics, crappy video, but why?

I originally had and still have a k5, on a whim a while back I bought a nikon 3200 but didnt keep it bc Pentax has me spoiled as the 3200 just didnt feel right and I felt Pentax build quality was far and above the build quality of the 3200. The video it could take was outstanding and since the k5 video is excellent as well, I just felt the k30 would be at least as good or even better than the k5 however either I'm wrong and this is just how the video looks from the k30, or there is a problem with my camera. I guess I had high expectactions and feel like I've been let down and am very disappointed with the video quality, the pic quality however is fantastic in comparison.

It just hit me that the video looks as if it is just generally out of focus and is not sharp despite ensuring it is in focus in the lcd screen prior to shooting. Even if I try to change the focus manually and stop it down, still the same result...when I focus through the lcd the same way though and take a picture, the pic is outstanding and very sharp.

I read somewhere the SR for movies does not rely on moving the sensor around as it would in the K5 but it utilizes the sensor in a differnt way to apply SR through digital means. It seems crazy to me why they would try something like this, but I suppose they have their reasons far beyond my understanding

I've had a canon 7d and also shot with my k5. As I had said before, the difference was pretty significant. I will have to see how to post a video to flickr and do that ASAP. My connection isn't the greatest right now at the hotel where I am however I should be able to post something within the next couple of days. The video just looks plain bad, nothing ever looks really sharp in it while in my k5 its tack sharp even with a slow and cheap 70-300 zoom lens on it. I'm using the 18-55 WR lens on the k30. I've also swapped out the memory card thinking maybe that could be the issue however I get the same crappy results.

Just received my new K30 with the WR 18-55 lens and am VERY happy with the picture quality, but WOW the video looks so bad either I must be doing something wrong, or there is something wrong with the camera. No matter what I do the video looks like its slightly not in focus despite manually focusing or using the automatic focus on the subject prior to recording. Even if I stop down, still the same result. My K5 video looks 100 times better at 720p than the K30 at 1080p, and even then I'm not trying too hard to get the K5 focus spot on. If this is how the K30 really shoots video, man talk about being disappointed. I hope its just me though b/c if it isnt this will drive me NUTS. That to me would be like getting a porsche and then finding out it doesn't come with A/C, so just roll your windows down thats good enough. Thanks to all for letting me vent, I hope you don't mind.

I have always been interested in photography however I'm slightly colorblind and have a very difficult time seeing certain variations of colors including purple fringing, or if the pic has slight hues to them. I can mistake orange for red, and have other issues as well. I can stare at a pic all day long on a lens review for example, and the reviewer is pointing out how terrible the purple fringing is and I swear I can barely see anything if I see it at all. Just wondering if there are any others out there that have to deal with things like this and if you found some solution or software that helps in any way?

Are the use of UV filters really that bad?

Rawr, thank you for that post, those charts and examples were very interesting. I took the advice of dms and took some with and without it, The sun had already started to set and the hotel had turned on the neon lights so I took a few of the scenery around here, To my suprise, when the neon lights were in the picture there was a faint reflection of the neon sign visible in another area of the picture. I travel for my job and happen to be just a few miles from lake Michigan this time so when I get a chance I think I will go at dusk and see if I can shoot chicago from across the lake with and without the filter to see what happens again. I have heard it is visible from where we are.

I've read some posts on here indicating that the use of ANY sort of UV filter on a lens degrades the quality of the pic. I have read it can affect anything from sharpness to contrast, and affect the cameras ability to autofocus. How many out there believe this is true? Personally I absolutely hate coming into contact with the lens optics and try to avoid it at all costs including the use of a UV filter for protection. I would like to get some feedback from the veterans or professionals out there on this subject please. I guess I just don't see how a clear and clean piece of thin glass could cause so many problems.

I find the personal stories very interesting, and after reading them I find myself wishing I still had my K20d. I would compare it to that first car you ever had, and the fond memories that came along with it that can never be replaced. Hell, if it were possible and I could get a brand new k20d even if it cost a pretty penny, I wouldnt hesitate. For those that havent told your story, please take 5 minutes and tell us yours.

It occurred to me the other day that I couldnt really remember why I had purchased a K20d. I had owned a canon xsi for about 4 months, sold it, then for some reason I decided to try Pentax on a whim. Some part of it was that I always enjoy the fact that Pentax always seems to be the underdog while still yet producing cameras that have attributes which no other camera has in that price range. Be it the weathersealing, the pentaprism viewfinder in even the lower end cameras, or the fact that one can get WR lenses for the same price or even cheaper than a similar lens for the big two or three, I love that about Pentax.

Anyhow though, I'm curious to know how many out there have switched from canon, nikon, or sony to Pentax and why? Also, are there any out there that shoot with Pentax AND one of the others?

Which lens for a $250 budget?

After blowing a big bunch on christmas, I have 250 left over and wanted to know if you had to choose just one lens for your camera and had only 250 what would it be? I have a k5 currently, without a lens, and was thinking about the Pentax 1.8 50mm for around 240. Any suggestions would be appreciated...the only thing I dont like about the 50 is the plastic mount.

I was curious to know adwb, why use memory cards no larger than 8gb? That caught my attention as a bit odd, but I'm sure there is a valid reason I'm not thinking of.

Thanks adwb for the detailed recommendations on equipment. If anyone would know I would think it would be you since you do it for a living as a professional. Myself, its more of a hobby that if I were to do it would be just for the fun of it with the possibility of earning some extra cash.

As a professional I'm an Occupational Therapist (think of it as a physical therapist except specializing in upper body injuries, brain injuries, strokes, etc) and there is no relation between the two so I need all the help I can get...lol....so I greatly appreciate your input as a respected professional photographer.

Looking for advice on a list of equipment that would be of bare necessity on a budget for a wedding and advice on what one would charge that would be just starting out. I've never done it before, and although I think it would be alot of work and a bit stressful I think it would be fun at the same time. Any advice would be appreciated from those wedding photographers that are experienced out there. Thank you:)

Just curious to know how many out there have used your gear for paid wedding photography work? Sadly enough, I was thinking there are probably people out there that would have some sort of rude comment when they see a photographer show up with Pentax gear and not something from the big two and if anyone has ran into this when doing paid wedding work?

K-01 rubber door?

I've been thinking about buying a k-01 and have watched 2 video reviews, both mentioning the rubber door over the memory card and that it never really wants to go back into place and is a poor design like it wouldnt take much to break it. To those that own a k-01, does the rubber door fit right? One review noted it never really would and most of the time was "hanging" there. I think something like this would drive me nuts.

Clean the sensor? Are those having the oil stain problems the d7000 had when it first came out or is it something else? Why would you need to clean the sensor of a brand new camera? Dust? Dirt?
