Pentax K7 1.11 Firmware suggestions

The DELETE button could be used, as it has no function in REC mode (on the K-x is used to raise the flash, on the K-7 it could be used to turn on THE LIGHT).
Solution: custom function for the light should have 3 options --> 1. on; 2. off; 3. on when pressing del
It's not that hard, you software peoples at Pentax!

Second, I want the behavior of the INFO Screen to be as on the K-x; look it up in the K-x manual, the implementation is more logical, on the K-7 is just nagging...
The INFO Screen should be used for checking (using the INFO button), not monitoring. That's redundant because the K-7 has the TOP LCD with has almost the same info as the info screen. REDUNDANCY, not always good.

There is also a small bug related to the INFO Screen and Multiple Exposure, when activating this mode if turn off the info screen the multiple exposure function gets canceled; or if you have the info screen off (2 presses of the INFO button) when activating multiple exposure the info screen comes on automatically. There is no need for this behavior as the K-7 has a dedicated indicator for Multiple Exposure in the TOP LCD. Again redundancy and bad implementation.

K7 does not recognize Sigma lens (sometimes)

I have a Sigma 70-300 APO on K-7 body. Also happened to me what you're descibing. The body would not recognise the lens, the aperture indicator stayed at F-- and AF was not working (it was like having a MF lens). I sent the lens to service and came back ok. The shop didin't tell me what was the cause. Now, 6 months later after being serviced it started acting up again, but like you say it's not constant and after moving the lens on the mount it becomes ok...

You should try to clean the contacts on the mount (both body & lens) with an eraser (or some special cleaning stuff that you find on the market) and see if that helps.

K-7 top lcd light

The top LCD lighting behavior on the K-7 is not as it is on the K10D/K20D. The K-7 has the top LCD light always on or always off, wich is annoying.

On the K-x the DEL button has a double function: "Flash UP" in REC mode / "Delete" in Playback mode. So, on the K-7 it could be something similar: "LCD light on" in REC mode / "Delete" in Playback mode.
They could implement an extra option in the custom settings menu, something like this:

29. LCD panel Illumination
1: On
2: Off
3: On when pressing DEL

But I think the Pentax development team must be kinda lazy...

* Added [Fine Sharpness 2] which makes image outlines even sharper than [Fine Sharpness] to the Sharpness setting of Custom Image. How to select [Fine Sharpness 2], Click Here
* Improved total image processing performance at the particular shooting condition or setting such as preview image quality at the "Water Color & Pastel" of Digital Filter mode.
* Improved stability for general performance such as with Battery Grip D-BG4, the rear e-dial may rarely become unstable in particular shooting condition.

There are no visible changes, in my opinion. Who uses Fine Sharpness and why was the any need for Fine Sharpness 2? I was hoping for improvement of the performance of the AF assist lamp, a custom function for centering AF point, the option to turn on at will the lighting of the top LCD. These two features (AF assist lamp and top LCD light) are rendered almost useless by the current mode of operation. And let's not forget that annoying status screen that comes back on each time you turn on the camera or when it's woken from stand-by, again useless if you are forced to leave it always off... Makes me wonder, was the K-7 designed by engineers or by the marketing guys? :)

This is normal behavior. If the light meter is not active then the status screen will not rotate. So you have to half press the sutter button and the problem is solved.

K-7 dust between LCD and protective cover

Before the K-7 i had a K200D (only 40 seals, or something like that, i don't remember the exact number) and for 1 year it didn't have this dust-under-the-lcd-cover issue. And i didn't use that K200D only in dust-free envoiroments, i assure you. The K-7 i send back was like a dust-under-the-lcd-cover magnet. The service guy said that he have seen this in only 1 or 2 K10Ds that were used for 3-4 years, but not in a 2 weeks old camera. They don't make them like they used to... :)

I finally got the replacement for my K-7, and guessing from the serial no. it's part of the same batch (old - 3384250 / repacement - 3384208). No dust between the LCD and cover, for now...
I'll wait one week and see if it's realy ok.

In terms of image quality it's ok, it only has 3-4 stuck red pixels appearing on video but not on the photos.

K-7 dust between LCD and protective cover

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this on their K-7.

I own a Pentax K-7 as from the 20th of july and just after about one week of effectively using it dust started to accumulate between the LCD and the protective cover. On 10th august I took in service. After 3 days in service the repair guy opened it up, "cleaned it as best as he could" and returned it to me saying that he didn't see anything wrong with the sealing. I was not happy with this and I tried to get a replacement. I ended up talking to the general manager of the store who told me they won't replace it and his advice to me was to "take it and make use of it with full trust".

Today the dust is back, and I'm planing on taking the K-7 back in service and ask for a replacement, again. The cleaning of the dust it's not a permanent solution, as dust seems to accumulate again and again.

The K-7 is superb but this dust problem makes me belive that I have a bad copy of it. The unit that the store has on display is a pre-production unit and it's dust free in the LCD, althou everyone who walks in the store trys it and the lens are changed pretty often...

The status screen should not be on by default. There should be the following sequence for displaying it:

Status screen OFF --> INFO button press --> Status screen ON --> INFO button press --> Control Panel --> INFO button press --> Status screen OFF

This is a semi-pro camera, you don't need the status screen always on because you have the top LCD for quickly reviewing settings. Plus, if the status screen default is off the battery is preserved, will last longer, and there is less head disipated by the main LCD.

PS: I work as a test automation engineer and, trust me, i know what i'm talking about when it comes to change or enhancement requests :)
