Probably for the best. I have a Jupiter myself (L39). I liked it. However it had a veiling flare reducing contrast and apparent sharpness. The back side of the aperture blades were shiny. Light would reflect off of the film, to the back side of the blades, which in turn reflected I tried back to the film.

I tried an easy fix. I disassembled the lens and colored the blades with a black Sharpie pen. It worked great until the ink wore off!

NEW K-3 III Firmware 1.80 is out

I do have the two optical IR and one wired Pentax brand remotes. The problem is that they REFOCUS when they release the shutter. I cannot focus the K3 III as I want. The K3 III will always refocus. I need to do what Pentax support told me to do "Set the camera in manual focus mode". Another work around is to use the phone app. It provides distinct functions at the cost of losing my GPS coordinates.

All of the other top of the line cameras support distinct remote focus and shutter functions through properly wired cables. The cameras that I have had that do this include: K10D; K20D; K5; K3; K3 II; and K1 II. The K3 III does not!

Pentax support told me they would forward my issue to engineering in Japan for review and inclusion in a future patch. They said they would not tell me which patch or when. They could have been just blowing smoke.

I just got the Pentax HD 43mm F1.9 Black Limited Lens in “like new” condition today from Amazon. I’ll probably use it on my K1 II. I already have the 40 limited for my apsc cameras.

It cost $354 and looks brand new in the box with caps case and paperwork. It was delivered by 6:30 am the next morning. I’ll test it out and do the AFFA tomorrow. I’ll let you all know if it is truly a deal.

I am not sure why I bought it. I already have the FA 50 1.4, DFA macro 50 2.8, Canon 55 1.2 K adapted two Tak (SMC & non), 50 macros, SMCT 50, and the HD DFA * 50 1.4. I guess I got it to try it out because of its reputation and the good deal.

I've never tried ES, but I am about to. I am embark on two projects with my K1 II, first a wildflower and astrophotography trip to Joshua Tree National Park this weekend, second digitizing my 9K negatives and slides followed by my late father-in-law's slides.

For my astrotracer shots I won't use ES but I will for everything else.

I would like to know if ES forecloses any future postprocessing opportunities.

I had 123 lenses and teleconverters, in my catalog, for all my formats and mounts after I sold several to KEH.

Since then I have acquired:
  • HD DFA* 50 from Amazon

  • SMC FA* 24 from MPB

  • HD FA31 from PF classified

  • Vivitar 19mm 3.8 Canon FD from a long forgotten box in the back of my closet

I guess it's 127 now!

Sold off the Takumars! Oh no!

They are future proof. You can use them on just about the any future system like Nikon Z, Canon R, Canon EF, MFT, Sony Alpha, or even Pentax. Most of them are pretty good to excellent to untouchable.

I don't think I've sold one. If I have not used mine in a year I'll move it to the back of the shelf and remove it from my most recently used list below. I think I have all the fixed focal lengths except 18mm, 120mm, 500mm, and 1000mm. I am still looking for a good 120mm and a second 85mm with the other internal configuration.

I tried the aluminum foil over the small LED light with a .2mm pin prick hole. The light was 40 feet away. I only did testing at f2.8 on both lenses. I'll wait to do a full test after my cataract surgeries with the skylines.

The Samyang 14 had "snow cone" looking lights with the vertex pointing away from the center. Dots in the center were round. All of the spots were about 10% bigger than similarly placed ones on the Irix.

The Irix 15 had small "X" shaped spots around the periphery and round in the center. The spots were all smaller than similarly placed Samyang spots. The center spot is enlarged almost to pixelation.

There is a small crinkle in the foil that causes an artifact below the spot in each picture.
The pictures are not in scale to each other. The Irix spots are all smaller.

I just got the Irix 15 Blackstone. I’ll test it out tomorrow. I will also compare it to my Samyang 14.

Test charts tomorrow. Real world, outdoor testing after my cataract surgeries later this month and the beginning of January.

Ricoh CFO: "The time has come for us to choose which businesses to choose,"

What is Ricoh to do? Nobody at Ricoh has directly said anything about trimming Pentax. It is all based on a quote from the CFO that does not mention any group or division. There is no verifiable information about shuttering Pentax at all! The article writer had a feeling, a vibe. He expressed it “it feels like there is a real possibility that Ricoh might sell or shutter its imaging division.” Emphasis mine.

What is Ricoh to do? If they address it at a news conference or with an official press release, it would lend credence to the rumors, not squash them. Ricoh needs to address it in a low key way. An Instagram post with a promise might just be the best. I’d bet dollars to donuts that Pentax will remain.

Remember Christine O'Donnell, the candidate for senator from Delaware? She held a press conference to announce that she was not a witch. Her candidacy was then flushed down the toilet.
Remember President Barack Obama? There were people starting rumors that he was African born. He never held a press conference in his campaign to respond to it. He was then elected President. Press releases and press conferences give veracity to rumor and innuendo.

How do you respond to “Mr Jones, when did you stop beating your wife?

Am I missing something?

Is this speculation based on an article from 19 months ago?

"Ricoh, which is shifting from a multifunction machine to a digital service company against the background of the rapid progress of paperless, will introduce an in-house company system in April 2021 and emphasize return on invested capital ( ROIC ),"

Thank you for providing context. I believe I understand the situation better now. I no longer need to hide behind the sofa.

Ricoh is still making and selling NEW lenses and cameras, patching in new features, and patching fixes for older bugs. There are no corporate raiders seeking slices of Ricoh. Ricoh is in the black. Pentax is well thought of. Pentax has a line of cameras from P&S thru APSC, full frame to MF.

Pentax has almost a complete monopoly on a type of camera. That monopoly is in its infancy. Ricoh would be foolish to make ANY major decisions until it sees how the market responds to that monopoly.

What me worry?

Just got a Rokinon 16mm f2.0. Got a good deal $287 at a black Friday sale. I've rarely seen it below $399 anytime, anywhere.

I've been wanting to try some starscapes/landscapes in the low desert this spring. This lens along with the Samyang 10 should work well on my K33. The Samyang 14, 20, and the Irix Blackstone 11 should do fine on the K12. I hope this is not a waste, as I have the DA15.

Good deal on the 16/2.0. With the discount it's about $100 cheaper than at stores or Amazon in the U.S.

I got one.

I just got a Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD(IF) MACRO A001P lens from MPB for $424 in “Like New” condition with case, with original cap, in original box.

It wasn’t. The lens looked brand new and performed great. However in the box there was a card with a yellow tag from Tamron stating this was a “Refurbished Lens”. Additionally the tripod mount ring was missing. Neither item was stated in the listing.

I politely complained to MPB via email (they have no phone), asking for a $180 partial refund for the misleading/wrong listing and purchasing a tripod ring. They countered with $100 and the statement that “As we do sell all used equipment, an item being factory refurbished is not something that would affect our condition rating.”

I feel deceived, frustrated, and taken advantage of. I will take the offer because of lack of options. I have spent a thousand dollars here. I think I’ll stick to KEH and PF for used gear from now on.

Compare HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW vs Sigma 10-20 f3.5 vs Sigma 8-16

I have just acquired a HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW wide angle zoom lens. Currently I also have the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 the Sigma 8-16.

I intend to run a series of tests on the three lenses, with the intent of selling off the 10-20 Sigma and testing my new Pentax. My tests will include the following for each lens at every full f-stop and at focal lengths of 8mm, 10/11mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm:
  • Horizontal angle of view

  • Vignetting

  • Resolution

  • Color

  • Distortion

  • Purple fringing, CA

  • Glare

This will be similar to my 100mm macro lens testing from several years ago.

Additional testing will be done for each lens for infrared suitability

All shots will be focus bracketed, use the MUP option, and be focused and tripped with a cable release. The camera will be on my 055 tripod with daylight colored lights. I'll post some pictures and thoughts when complete. I know that I am not testing a species of lens, but rather a specimen of each of the species.

I have already done some testing for decentering and resolution after I received the lenses as part of my initial inspection.

I am unsure as as to which camera to use. My K3 III is the camera I will be using these lenses on in the future, but it has the cable release issue that Pentax has not yet fixed. That would definitely impact all my resolution tests. It would force me to manual focus well hundreds of test shots. Cataract surgery is still a couple of months away. On my original K3, the cable release functioning is normal, like the K1, K1II, K5, K5II, K20D, K10D. Life is full of quandaries.

HAVE I MISSED ANYTHING?
WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO SEE ANYTHING ELSE

Just received the FA* 24mm f2.0 that I purchased a week ago from MPB. It cost about two and a half. The glass is perfect, no marks, not worth having cleaned. It does not have the factory lens hood.

It is bigger and heavier than my Canon 24mm f2.0. That was the lens that lived on my Canon F1N my last couple of years of film.

Even though I have the Sigma 12-24mm, Samyang 24mm F1.4, and the SMC Tak 24 f3.5, I expect to use this a lot on the K1 II as the Canon equivilent was my most frequently used.

Off to testing this and my 11-18. I got the cast off my hand and arm yesterday!

I just got two things.

HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW from Amazon warehouse for $500. It looks perfect. It looks new. It may be a deal. I'll find out soon.

A focus adapter, the new Techart PRO Leica M – Sony E Autofocus Adapter ver II (LM-EA9).

Both are sitting on my desk waiting for me to get my hand out of the cast in two weeks.

I am not a patient man.
