Probably for the best. I have a Jupiter myself (L39). I liked it. However it had a veiling flare reducing contrast and apparent sharpness. The back side of the aperture blades were shiny. Light would reflect off of the film, to the back side of the blades, which in turn reflected I tried back to the film.

I tried an easy fix. I disassembled the lens and colored the blades with a black Sharpie pen. It worked great until the ink wore off!

I just got the Pentax HD 43mm F1.9 Black Limited Lens in “like new” condition today from Amazon. I’ll probably use it on my K1 II. I already have the 40 limited for my apsc cameras.

It cost $354 and looks brand new in the box with caps case and paperwork. It was delivered by 6:30 am the next morning. I’ll test it out and do the AFFA tomorrow. I’ll let you all know if it is truly a deal.

I am not sure why I bought it. I already have the FA 50 1.4, DFA macro 50 2.8, Canon 55 1.2 K adapted two Tak (SMC & non), 50 macros, SMCT 50, and the HD DFA * 50 1.4. I guess I got it to try it out because of its reputation and the good deal.

Welcome from a fellow Angeleno!

The K1 is a marvelous camera. I have the Mark II. I have had the Pentax 28-105mm and the Sigma 24-135mm. I sold them both after trying the Sigma 24-60, a hard lens to find. It is a superb lens with fantastic IQ for a zoom. Check out the review here: Sigma EX DG 24-60mm F2.8 Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Also the Pentax 15-30mm is a fantastic optic, but very pricey. It is much better than the Sigma 12-24mm. In addition you have the ability to mount any number of fantastic used M42 with a simple adapter or Kmount lenses.

That is a nice lens. I have and I’ve used it a lot on my K3. I also have the 8-16 and used to have the slower 10-20. The color, DR, resolution, and general IQ of the K1 II 15-30 combo exceeds any of the aforementioned K3 combinations just from my bench testing, testing around my yard, and a single trip to Joshua NP.

I have not had much testing or experience with my K3 III 11-18 combo. I will be running a series of tests with the 11-18 vs 10-20 vs 8-16.

NEW K-3 III Firmware 1.80 is out

That is the precise problem. The K3 III needs both circuits closed for the shutter to fire.

The focus circuit alone causes AF. The shutter circuit closing alone does nothing. When both are closed the camera focuses then fires.

---------- Post added 03-17-23 at 01:01 PM ----------

The problem persists regardless of the state of the setting in the menu.

---------- Post added 03-17-23 at 01:06 PM ----------

The exact solution given to me by Pentax Technical Support. "Don't use autofocus, turn it off"

---------- Post added 03-17-23 at 01:14 PM ----------

I just want a single remote that can focus and fire the shutter in discreet steps like my K10D, K20D, K5, K3, K3 II, and K1 II.

Pentax please put back what you took away! I am not asking for something new.

I do have the two optical IR and one wired Pentax brand remotes. The problem is that they REFOCUS when they release the shutter. I cannot focus the K3 III as I want. The K3 III will always refocus. I need to do what Pentax support told me to do "Set the camera in manual focus mode". Another work around is to use the phone app. It provides distinct functions at the cost of losing my GPS coordinates.

All of the other top of the line cameras support distinct remote focus and shutter functions through properly wired cables. The cameras that I have had that do this include: K10D; K20D; K5; K3; K3 II; and K1 II. The K3 III does not!

Pentax support told me they would forward my issue to engineering in Japan for review and inclusion in a future patch. They said they would not tell me which patch or when. They could have been just blowing smoke.

Pixel depth on electronic shutter

I've never tried ES, but I am about to. I am embark on two projects with my K1 II, first a wildflower and astrophotography trip to Joshua Tree National Park this weekend, second digitizing my 9K negatives and slides followed by my late father-in-law's slides.

For my astrotracer shots I won't use ES but I will for everything else.

I would like to know if ES forecloses any future postprocessing opportunities.

YEAH! Thank you. Real data.

Pixel depth on electronic shutter

What is the pixel depth on our cameras when we use electronic shutter, shooting raw?

Is it 14 bit like the spec indicates for the sensor?

or

Is it 12 bit like this article (strongly) hints?

I can't find any documentation either way. Any way to check or test?

This article from the "Photoblographer" does not mention Pentax (of course), but hints that it is universal.

I converted my K10D when I first got it when it first came out (BBF on/ SHBF off). All of my cameras are set with it now, even my Sony a7II.

I want to control the focus, not have the camera redo the focus after I have it set as I want it.

Are 2.xx firmware releases stable?

I have two stupid questions.

Is the file unzipped?

Do you have the appropriate file K1 vs K1 II ?

Edit -----
Freshly formatted won't work. You need a card that has taken a picture before with all previous .bin files removed.

Upgraded to 2.20 and everything worked fine. I noticed that I lost the colors on the info screen, but I don’t know when that happened. None of the 12 settings stick.

I had to do a software reset to complete a GPS calibration after 2.10. However that might be due to a leftover from a previous update.

I do not test every function after every upgrade. I just set the mode dial to “P” and off I go.

I think they are ugly.

However in Canon world one of the most valuable collectables is the olive F1n (second of the three F1 generations). They go for obscene prices.

K3 III shutter release cable STILL not fixed with 1.70

Yes, that would work. That is what the Pentax people recommended. I can also use the Pentax IPhone app which has distinct focus and shutter functions.

I spent $1900 on a camera with the expectation that the shutter would operate as all the previous top of the line cameras did. The difference is not called out in any specification or advertising.

The camera buttons and iPhone app both allow for distinct focus and shutter operations. Why all of a sudden does the cable release not allow it?

Ha ha!

My K3 3 also works with the CS-205. Third party vendors also took advantage of this “problem” (see previous thread). Canon high end cameras also function this way. Pentax USA people said they would send a change request to the firmware team in Japan for a K3 3 fix.

Additionally it makes no sense to have a distinct focus circuit if closing the shutter circuit would focus every time. It would be unnecessary, redundant.
