If you use X mode, it will set the shutter to your programmed sync speed and brighten the live view image so you can compose and focus.

It's a bit slow to focus on the K-1, but it still works pretty well.

Image Sync updated

I tried out using images sync again yesterday after more than a year. It has so much potential and would be so useful in my job. However, it still sucks. I was able to connect to the camera (a huge improvement from when it would just crash at launch) and even take photos. However, everytime I took a photo, it would cancel out and I'd have to reconnect and type in the password again and again. Everytime I took a photo. So, its still useless to me.

Full time commercial photographer here. I use Pentax both personally and professionally but have experience with Canon and other rented cameras such as Hasselblad.

I can try to answer a few questions but I don't have a ton a free time.

Or almost 7 Pentax K-5s or almost 17 Pentax K-20s! Why keep comparing the price of a new camera to the price of different older cameras?

Not that there needs to be more evidence that this is a great camera, but here are a couple hummingbird shots at med-high ISO from this now 5 year old camera and 55-300 DA L lens.

Can you just press the ISO button on top and set it to what you want? You'll have to be in a mode that allows manual ISO, too.

I really like my sigma 85mm f/1.4 for portrait work. It's long enough to be flattering but short enough to be versatile.

On camera flash and ISO

The flash is done at exposure. So, the camera is still metering for the scene its looking at. It tries to get a decent amount of ambient exposure. Then when you go to take the picture, it pre-flashes to tell the flash what exposure to use and takes the real shot with the flash at that power. If you want a different ambient-to-flash ratio, then you have to take control and set the camera according to what you want. Its not a mind reader.

Need help - how do I take good images small item??

Your focus was behind the subject. You are also shooting at f/5.6.

You need enough light to shoot at f/16 for maximum depth of field and proper focus. Use a tripod and focus in liveview. BTW, you don't have enough light on the front of your subject.
