Do high trigger voltages of old flash guns really dangerous????

Few weeks ago I bought online an old flash gun Philips 25CB. I was very excited about my first flash gun capable of bouncing up to 90 degree and having three power level setting. When I received the flash, I hurriedly inserted three freshly charged cells and turn it on. I waited for few seconds to let the flash fully charged. There was no response. I tried couple of times pressing test button but all in vain. Unfortunately flash was dead! I was very disappointed. I called to the first owner of the flash to file a complaint but his cell phone was powered off. After thinking a while about the current situation, I decided to give it a try to repair. In short repair was very straight and simple as I was excepting. I reassemble the flash inserted the cells and turn it on. This time it started charging with a whistling sound and after 5 seconds ready lamp was lit. I pressed the test button and there was a very powerful flash illuminating the whole room. :D

As I was already searching on the internet about using old flash gun on new DSLR, I was very conscious about the HIGH TRIGGER voltages on hot shoe that could FRY by gear. I set my DMM at auto range and measured the voltages of the only pin of the flash gun hot shoe. I was shocked looking at the screen of the DMM. It reads 150VDC. The excitement of the successful repair vanished by this measurement. According to available information on the internet, it was not safe to use this flash on my Pentax K-r. Being an electronic engineer, I was not going to let the flash go unserved so easily. So, I decided to modify its circuit and made it work.
I was completely in dark about how flash actually works. Some further searching reveals that camera triggers the flash mounted on the hot shoe by shorting the central contact pin of the flash to ground. I shorted the flash contacts to verify my freshly gained knowledge and it worked. My next thought was “what is inside the camera which does this job????”

I further searched on the internet to get service manual of my Pentax K-r for an exact answer of my question but could not succeed. At that moment a thought flashed into my mind. How much damage a 1.2V cell can cause to my camera??? Hold on I know we are talking about HIGH VOLTAGES but don’t forget our main power source is three or four 1.2V cells assemble in parallel to increase current capacity. To discharge the Xeon lamp in the flash we need 1000V to 4000V. To get such high voltage from a DC power source, an oscillator circuit oscillates the DC power which drives a step up transformer. The stepped-up voltages are then stored in a bulky capacitor which ultimately became our main power source to discharge the flash. All flash guns use the same principle. A friction of this voltage appears on the hot shoe contact.

Does only high voltage enough to destroy or damage an electronic circuitry? The answer is NO. We need a power source capable of delivering high current to damage a component as well. According to electrical law “stepping up voltage reduces the current in the safe friction it is stepped up”. Means when we step up 1.2 volt to say 1000 volt, we actually do almost 1000 times step up ultimately reducing the current capacity 1000 times. In my case I used 2100mA three cells in parallel thus total current capacity of 6300mA which reduces to 6.3mA after step up procedure. Most of the current flows in trigger plate to discharge the Xeon lamp. When I measured how much current flow between the hot shoe contacts, I was astonished to know that it was merely 130uA. So little current even at 150V is not enough to damage an electronic component. Now, I was not worried at all putting my flash gun on my Pentax K-r hot shoe. I made my first flash mounted on the camera and waited for any smoke or any other abnormality. Nothing happened. I made couple of further shots to test the camera and flash. Everything was working fine.

The last words, for electronic switching inside camera we have three options to use. A
1. BJT
2. FET
3. MOSFET
In my opinion a MOSFET is the most probable solution to be used for HSS. Even a small signal MOSFET can handle 350V plus 500mA current safely. In my opinion, high trigger voltages are not a problem as long as it belongs to a flash gun. So, keep enjoying old flash guns you got without any worry next time.

"I just want a decent camera setup in order to be able to take nice family/friends get together pictures, I have no intention to develop a photography hobby".

That was December last year, I got me a bundle, a K-r with the 18-55 kit lens, a bag, a 4 gb memory card.

Less than half a year later:

Bodies:
K-r
MZ-6
2x MZ-7 (hey they were cheap as chips!)

Lenses (In addition to the kit lens, that I now never use)
FA 28-90mm (that I got with the MZ-6, it's up for grabs on the local ad pages here)
F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5
FA 100-300mm f/4.7-5.8
A 50mm f/2
Cosina 24mm f/2.8 Macro MC
DA 35mm 2,4

Development
1 Paterson 2 reel tank
1 Paterson 3 reel tank
1 AP 2 reel tank
12x2 Clip hangers for drying film
A box full of items needed for B/W develoment + chemicals

Digital Development
Epson v500
Epson Stylus Photo 1400 (to be filled up with MIS UltraTone UT-14)
~100 EUR worth of ink jet photo paper (mostly ILFORD)
And on "investigation" yet another Epson (A4 though) for Color prints, and a Spyder Colormeter

Software
Apple Aperture
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom + Elements
DxO Filmpack
Nik Software Color Efex, Silver Efex, Sharpener and Viveza

Less than six months... and I am constantly looking at medium format film cameras, probably a 6x7 will find it's new home early summer, and oh, I need a flash, and a flash handle, and a monopod, and a... and a...

Luckily the missus is all in, one of the MZ-7s is her's, and the 100-300mm was for her (she likes details, ornaments on building, churches etc.).

Just thought I would add the aftermarket batteries I use and have been using for years in the last three camera bodies, are all from chinese ebay sites with very high ratings they average $12.00 Australian verses $140.00 for Pentax. I am not going to spend my time doing indepth voltage comparasions etc but I do wear full u.e.d. protection when using the camera. LOL

Scanner Comparison Images

I hesitate to post this since it opens a huge can of worms. As background information, there have been several recent posts regarding dedicated vs. flatbed scanners for various purposes and various formats. I own both a Nikon 5000 ED that I use for 35mm and an Epson V700 that I recently purchased for 120 and 4x5. Up until this evening, I had never compared the two using 35mm film.

Edit:

Don't ignore the comparison photos below, but don't take them at face value before considering the second set of comparisons posted later in this thread.
Scanner Comparison Redux
The short story is that the Epson is not kind to less than flat negatives. If your negs are curved at all, you might as well do your scans on a much cheaper scanner. If your negs are flat, your results will be much, much better.

:End Edit

Here are the details of my quick/dirty setup:
  • 35mm Rollei Retro 100 negative of a lens test setup from several months ago

  • Nikon 5000 ED using FH-3 strip film holder

  • Epson V700 using stock Epson holder with spacers set to + position, emulsion side up

  • Both scanners at 2400 dpi, default exposure, and 16 bit grayscale

  • USM off for both scanners

Here is the full frame image from the Nikon:

Nikon, Full Frame

Here are full resolution center crops from both scanners at 2400 dpi:

Nikon 5000 ED vs. Epson V700 @2400 dpi

And to see if there is some hidden resolution somewhere, here is a repeat with the Epson at 4800 dpi down-sampled to 2400 dpi:

Nikon 5000 ED vs. Epson V700 @4800 dpi (down-sampled to 2400 dpi)

Before I write anything else, I think that it is important to note a few things:
  • I tried both emulsion-side up and emulsion-side down as well as different positions of the "feet" on the Epson

  • The holder did not appear to be doing a very good job holding the film flat. In fact, the bow is visible as distortion from top-to-bottom when comparing the horizontal lines on the two scans.

  • I did the test at 9600 dpi with similar results

Better performance might be possible using a focusable holder such as those from betterscanning.com and/or mounting to glass.

I personally am feeling a little depressed since the V700 was purchased at a bit of a sacrifice. I am generally happy with the results on 120 roll film, but realize that I will have to have any critical scans done professionally (double ouch). With any luck, there might be better performance with flatter film and a focusable carrier.

Luminous Landscapes Nick Devlin's take on Pentax at Photokina: "Oh, god, poor Pentax. They invented the SLR, though you would never know it. Their cameras have always been excellent. Their lenses have always been excellent. Their marketing? Face-palm! Pentax had but a fraction of the physical presence of the other major makers, and nothing to push their innovative products. The foremost of these is the K-5IIs, which, hugely, looses the dreaded Anti-aliasing filter. This is the first APS-C sized camera to take that brave step, following in the D800E’s lead. This is potentially a big deal, but I could barely get anyone to even explain it to me. Ugh."

I do, however, hope to have Pentax’s superb western Canadian rep, Bill Gouge, get me one to test, because landscape photographers should be seriously interested in this camera. If they ever hear of it.

Pentax has a long tradition of making very photographer-focused DSLRs, often eschewing the latest fashions to concentrate on providing cameras with well-sorted ergonomics and a focus on core photographic features such as good viewfinders. This trend appeared to reach its peak with the K-5 - arguably the best APS-C DSLR currently on the market. On the Pentax APS-C lensline..." And let's make it clear from the outset that Pentax should be applauded for producing such a lens, to provide a genuine alternative to the wideangle zooms which are the only option in other manufacturers' lineups. DxOMark Sensor For Benchmarking Cameras
An Analysis by Peter van den Hamer
DxOMark Sensor For Benchmarking Cameras

"Today’s (APS-C) sensor with the highest Dynamic Range score (the Pentax K-5) spans 14 stops at 80 ISO. DxOMark's Dynamic Range plot for the K-5 shows that its Dynamic Range drops by almost one 1 EV each time the ISO is doubled. The ISO setting for the K-5 thus corresponds closely to an ideal amplifier that amplifies both signal level and noise level equally without adding noise of its own. That is nice."

"... As a general rule, larger sensors outperform smaller ones....
...but newer models generally outperform older models. In particular, the newest APS-C models (Nikon's D7000 and Pentax' K-5 and Sony Alpha 580) outperform the older 1.3× sensors and even most full-frame (1.0×) sensors due to a significantly lower noise floor."

"Some things that can be seen in Figure 1b:
... The new 9.5 k$ Pentax 645D costs half as much as the other medium-format cameras. It costs about the same as the most expensive full-frame model (Nikon D3x). Although it benefits from its large sensor size, its image quality is similar[9] to the new Pentax K-5 which costs 15% as much."

"[footnote 9] The Pentax 645D has three times more pixels than the Pentax K-5. But as will be discussed later, this may not be as important for image quality as it may seem."

Looks like Pentax really pulled out all of the stops on the K-5

Are your pictures out of focus? by Mark Dubovoy - That sinking feeling

"It is important to understand that the focus problem as it relates to the focal length of lenses is against the intuition of most photographers.

Most photographers believe that the problem is more acute with long focal length lenses, because these lenses have shallower depth of field.

It turns out that exactly the opposite is true: The problem is much more acute with short focal length lenses. "

"...extremely small variations from perfection in the lens to sensor distance can cause large problems for short lenses. Longer lenses are less sensitive. If you see a problem with a long lens, you are likely dealing with a large focus plane error."

Bokeh
"The term comes from the Japanese word boke (暈け or ボケ), which means "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji (ボケ味), the "blur quality". The Japanese term boke is also used in the sense of a mental haze or senility.
The English spelling bokeh was popularized in 1997 in Photo Techniques magazine, when Mike Johnston, the editor at the time, commissioned three papers on the topic for the March/April 1997 issue; he altered the spelling to suggest the correct pronunciation to English speakers, saying "it is properly pronounced with bo as in bone and ke as in Kenneth, with equal stress on either syllable". The spellings bokeh and boke have both been in use at least since 1996, when Merklinger had suggested "or Bokeh if you prefer." The term bokeh has appeared in photography books at least since 1998. It is sometimes pronounced /ˈboʊkə/ (boke-uh).”

K-5 bounced flash overexposure fix - seems to be helping with other K-5'ers too

K-5 Bounce Flash Overexposure FIX NEW - ekelly
Hello everyone. I recently posted a thread concerning my K-5 overexposing photos when using bounce flash in any mode. After reading the review of the K-5 here on this site I found the dynamic range section of the review interesting. DPreview States "The K-5 features a highlight expansion function which applies to both JPEG and RAW". After reading this, I wondered how this function would apply to my problem of overexposure with bounce flash (since I only shoot RAW at weddings). I switched the dynamic range highlight expansion function on and now I have no more overexposure problems what so ever. Amazing... There must be a firmware bug or something. But for now, no more blown out photos with bounce flash as long as I have the highlight expansion turned on. I hope this helps people with the same problem...
Eric

{"Q: Klaus, why do you consider the K-5 to be superior to the D7000? Other than a couple of extra fps and the in-body IS, it seems to be on-par with the Nikon or even trailing (AF points, metering), while costing $400 more.

A: It's smaller & more rugged. Body-side IS as you mentioned. And more important than anything else - Pentax has a complete dedicated APS-C lens lineup. Nikon has merely isolated solutions here specifically regarding primes."}

"I think there's absolutely no doubt that Pentax has, by far, the best APS-C lineup out there. It's not even a close call. Full format lenses on APS-C DSLRs are always a compromise - at least in terms of size/weight."

"Well, I think this one is fairly obvious. Pentax is basically the only manufacturer offering APS-C pancakes. If you want to stay small with primes there's no way around Pentax. The Pentax 60-250 is also unique. There're more. This is basically the advantage of a dedicated APS-C lineup and not some sort of mix."

"The D7000 has "magnesium-alloy top and rear cover". The K-5/7 has also front and bottom plates made of metal. It is also likely that it has more seals.
The K-5/7 is a D300 class body, the D7000 is an upgraded D90 or downgraded D300, whatever you wish."

"Anyway, technically the K-5 seems to be the best new APS-C DSLR of the season. It seems superior to the 60D/D7000/A55/E5 to me at least."

Pentax Pre shake reduction ideas.
- Mr Ohkura was also able to confirm that Pentax is working on a system to reduce vibration in lenses, similar to Canon's Image Stabilisation system and Nikon's Vibration Reduction system, but he was not prepared to reveal when we might see this technology in a production-model lens. There was no comment on systems for internal lens motors either, but if the new 35mm camera is as well specified as the company claims, and if the company intends to compete with existing high-end semi-pro models, you can be sure the release of these technologies cannot be far off. circa 2000 source: Ohkura

Words from the wise - MJ
"... albeit completely forgotten aristocrat — the M42 screwmount Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f/1.4. This is one of my favorite lenses, in fact. Its results can be simply gorgeous. Of course, to use this lens you'll have to put up with using a Spotmatic (of course one can use the M42 adapter on just about most nearly every bayonet mount Pentax film or DSLR), one of the greatest SLRs in history but long in the tooth today. An engineer at a Japanese camera company told me that if this lens were manufactured and marketed today, it would most likely have to sell for $1,200 to $1,500*. I got mine for $60. (Well, okay, I actually have six of them, to be honest.)"
*(ed. note: in 2002 U.S. dollars).

MJ and friends probably has more to say on the goodness of the DA 35/2.8 macro Ltd than you can shake a stick at - what does that mean anyway?

"I don't want to be guilty of too much soft-pedaling here. Cross my heart I'm not saying this to try to push lenses. But to be fair and accurate, I should say straight out that if you own a Pentax K10D or K20D and don't buy this (DA 35/2.8 ltd macro) lens sooner or later, you're depriving yourself. No one who shoots Pentax digital in any serious way would ever regret buying this lens. It really is a treat. I'd recommend it even if you don't normally care for primes, even if you seldom shoot macro, and even if the focal length and speed aren't quite an exact fit. Its virtues go way beyond extreme sharpness. It will be the best lens you own, the best match for your very best technique, and, soon enough, your best results with it will make you forget what it once cost. If you're in the system, you need it. Even if you don't need it you need it. Very highly recommended. — MJ > source: The Online Photographer: Just Published! Pentax 35mm ?/2.8 DA Macro Limited Review
