I thought I'd post about this new lens, as there's not much online buzz about it. It's the first newly-released lens I've bought. I was keen to get my hands on it because I hate lugging heavy lenses like my 24-70 2.8 when I am out shooting landscape.
Anyway, I am very pleased with how sharp it is - much better than my 24-70. The only flaw is softness in the extreme corners, but it becomes negligible when you stop down >f5.6.
And it's nicely light and compact.
Here's an image with centre, extreme left and right borders, and extreme lower left corner crops at 100%. |

I realised I hadn't shot ANYTHING for ages, so I whipped out my camera on the way back from the gym and snapped these. LOVE the portability and quality of the RX100! |

I approve of these laws of design... classic modernism. But they aren't the only approaches to good design and clearly there is a place for whimsy and self expression in product design, postmodern architecture etc....
And who says the snorkel isn't 'functional'. Smear a little detergent, blow in the SD card slot, and bubbles will come out of it.

The RX100 is really proving it's worth for snapshots on weekends away; these from New Year's Eve in Cornwall:
Last one using the on-board 'bounce flash'.

Tried out a little RX100 mk1 at the weekend.... quite pleased with the results for landscape snaps. It's giving me cause to consider whether to keep it instead of my NEX set up... difficult one, as I quite like using manual lenses on the NEX; but as a travel camera, the RX makes a lot of sense.
So what I would like to ask Sony users is - would the 16-50 pancake on an NEX offer similar/better quality while being 'pocketable'? |

You can get cheap wireless trigger kits from Ebay for about the price of a KFC 'Family Bucket' and they work fine. Forget using cables.
2x Minolta AF4000s shot through umbrellas, generic ebay radio triggers on K10D:
Totally over the top image, so I thought why not put the cherry on top and colour pop it?

More Lensturbo, + K135/2.5:
The bulk of the shoot was on K10d with speedlights and umbrellas.

I had to go and shoot a landscape project for work; along with my K10D I took along my NEX and 16mm, lens turbo, Pentax 50/1.4 and 135.2.5. The weather was against me but I will show you the images anyway, if only to keep the lensturbo samples going!

Yes I agree. Tied to a strong form, and adding meaning to the shot by guiding the viewer's attention. I'm not sure that highlighting a yellow bucket via colour popping adds anything other than 'Look! A yellow bucket!' Sorry Norm.

Weather sealing has no impact on IQ but it is a bonus point, especially as you own a K30!
The DA55-300mm (or the slightly cheaper DAL55-300mm variant) is probably worth stretching to, it's definitely one of the best zooms in it's price class.

Some excellent urban abstracts there Christine. The lens obviously worth having, for interior shots like that. Looking at some of the other shots (e.g. the skyline shots) I suspect the Sigma 8-16mm might have been a little better but what an awkward package it would be with the adapter.
Anyway here's my Christmas offering, with the NEX-3 and Pentax 85/2: |

You can change the shutter speed if you select M mode. (In order to do this you need to set 'Using Aperture Ring' to 'Permitted' and 'Green Button in Manual Mode' to 'Tv Shift'). Getting a correctly exposed shot will be a matter of trial and error or experience.
However, the green button can be used to calculate the correct shutter speed using 'stop down metering'. When you press the green button, the camera will briefly stop the lens down, meter, and select the appropriate shutter speed. If the speed is too low, you can increase the ISO or aperture, and try again.
Alternatively if you are happy using the lens wide-open and don't want to continuously have to press the green button, you can use Av mode. The lens will always stay wide-open, but the camera will now actually select the correct shutter speed on the fly. To increase the shutter speed, raise the ISO.

In the UK crime has been steadily reducing, whereas gun ownership remains negligible, and gun laws have tightened. Hasn't crime in NYC been going down, while gun laws have been toughened? After numerous threads on this it seems to me that there is little correlation between gun laws and general crime. But when it comes to gun deaths and injuries, and the sort of tragedy we are discussing here, its a different matter. An insignificant part of the overall crime stats? Tell that to the moms at Sandy Hook.

That's about right.
And because school shooting sprees make up a tiny percentage of the overall homicide statistics, they're not significant.
Not worth worrying about, much less putting up with the merest threat of any sort of slight inconvenience.

So I'm back from my holiday on the volcanically-forged island of Lanzarote. The NEX and 16mm, with Sigma 24/2.8 and Pentax 35-70mm made a handy little kit. I think I could really do with a good AF zoom for this camera though! A few missed shots due to focus error. When you're on holiday with a partner there isn't always time to faff around with manual focussing!

Surely the beauty of SR is the sensor moves, not the imaging circle of the lens?

I'll take a wild punt and guess that skipping the capitalisation is intended as a display of disillusionment with the USA ;)
