I don't own a Sony. However an older Sony FF mirrorless, as the OP discussed, is a logical and economic way of mounting that legacy 35mm glass to a FF sensor. With the EVF providing aids like peaking for manual focussing which is tricky on a DSLR's OVF.

Just get the Sony, it'll breathe new life into your MF glass. Think of it as your MF cam. As well as your Pentax lenses there is some wonderful MF glass from Samyang out there.
If you can get used to the EVF, it might become your main camera. Tamron are producing some absolutely brilliant lenses for E-mount at the moment, which makes me quite jealous.

I thought I'd post about this new lens, as there's not much online buzz about it. It's the first newly-released lens I've bought. I was keen to get my hands on it because I hate lugging heavy lenses like my 24-70 2.8 when I am out shooting landscape.
Anyway, I am very pleased with how sharp it is - much better than my 24-70. The only flaw is softness in the extreme corners, but it becomes negligible when you stop down >f5.6.
And it's nicely light and compact.
Here's an image with centre, extreme left and right borders, and extreme lower left corner crops at 100%. |

I've not seen the USA Big Brother, but I noticed this watching the US version of Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares. UK, real 'drama' was allowed to develop and it's different every episode. No music. USA, forced drama to a prescribed formula with lots of intense music and over the top editing. However, I love both! Youtu.be |

I got myself a Tamron 24-70mm (version 1) - took a while to get used to the heft of it, but I like it a lot. |

Thanks for that! I think the 85/1.8G would actually be the way to go. It's been one of the most impressive lenses on this thread and that's a great example. I have recently got hold of a 35/2 which feels like a natural focal length for my use, and the 85 would probably complement it better.

I had to send the 50/1.8D used in my initial test shots back - the focus ring kept sticking in manual focus. Looking at the bokeh in my shots, it's not exactly smooth. Looking at it makes me feel like I'm going to get a migraine. I'm wondering if the 50/1.8G would be noticeably better.

I think the DA35 works on FF as well as the DA50mm. I've seen good reports of it on FF and have used it on my film cameras - it's lovely.
There's a bit of duplication with all those zooms. One approach would be to 'clean house' and start afresh on the K1, buying only what you really use and need. Perhaps a good f2.8 normal zoom lens (The Tamron 28-70mm is said to be decent enough) and a longer zoom that would replace your 50-200mm. I presume you got the Sigma 18-35 for shallow dof and good results in low light; well you'll be able to get that easily on FF.

A D600 landed with me today, and I rushed out to take pics of the dog with the 50/1.8D I also bought, to see what this 'FF shallow DOF' business was all about.
Yep. The DOF is definitely much shallower. And 50mm is more of a usable walkaround focal length. Now to take some more interesting pictures!

I really like the compo (and light) in the last shot, I think the telephoto works so much better with the subject matter.

Have a look in the Full Frame Shots and Thoughts thread. Agree with the idea of a reasonable quality standard zoom as a starter for ten (on any system).

I realised I hadn't shot ANYTHING for ages, so I whipped out my camera on the way back from the gym and snapped these. LOVE the portability and quality of the RX100! |

The RX100 is really proving it's worth for snapshots on weekends away; these from New Year's Eve in Cornwall:
Last one using the on-board 'bounce flash'.

Glorious shots (although I'd like to see the colour versions!)
Well it looks like the RX100 stays, I think, cos I'm going on holiday tomorrow and am not sure I can actually fit my K30 or NEX + a plethora of lenses into my hand luggage.

The RX100 won't comfortably fit in a tight pocket either (and I'm too scared of scratching it in my jeans pocket, since I'm undecided about keeping it). It's a tough one. If the 16-50 fit my NEX-3 the choice would be simple... I'd just get the lens. Something like an NEX-3N with 16-50 would cost a little less than the RX100, but while I appreciate the ability to use manual lenses on it, the simplicity of a little pocket camera like the RX100 also appeals.
I'm getting to like using the RX100 more now I have worked out how to set it up. I use it in Av mode so I have the front ring set to ISO and the rear dial of course defaults to f-stop.
Can I program the ? button to do something more useful?

Actually I find the RX100 a shade TOO small... the NEX with 16-50 is at the larger end of 'pocketable', but acceptable. Gah now I think of it, the MX1 is about the perfect size for me, such shame the sensor isn't 1" ;P
Oh yeah the sweep panorama is superb isn't it?

Tried out a little RX100 mk1 at the weekend.... quite pleased with the results for landscape snaps. It's giving me cause to consider whether to keep it instead of my NEX set up... difficult one, as I quite like using manual lenses on the NEX; but as a travel camera, the RX makes a lot of sense.
So what I would like to ask Sony users is - would the 16-50 pancake on an NEX offer similar/better quality while being 'pocketable'? |

Interesting read, Rupert (and very nice shots!) Do you think you could convert your garage or build a workshop in your garden to convert into a 'home studio'?
I've been thinking about the studion idea, and the only way I can think of making it work would be to go in with a couple of other photographers and split the costs.

They look pretty good to me, really like no.2!
As ever I am contemplating FF... it's always there in the back of my mind. Shot 2 demonstrates why I am interested. Would the Tamron 28-75mm and Nikon D700 make a sensible 'budget' starter kit? I would add a few primes as I go along, but the Tammy seems quite a reasonable replacement for my 17-50mm (on crop).

You can get cheap wireless trigger kits from Ebay for about the price of a KFC 'Family Bucket' and they work fine. Forget using cables.

Totally over the top image, so I thought why not put the cherry on top and colour pop it?
