40mm 2.8 XS discontinued in 2016 ?

Why should it be discontinued? It works fine with any newer K-mount camera. Even full frame. Its main advantages are lower price and shorter length compared to the 40mm limited. The limited have a different set of advantages. Two different products.

Its unlikely, but not impossible. Pentax _may_ be the first or only to utilize such a sensor, but again unlikely. I believe several companies are able to make 2,75 micron pixels at APS-C size with high yield without stitching.

Pixel shift and ISO, where does real world end and marketing begin?

How long is a rope? There is no clear answare to your question. Personally I leave the higher part of the ISO scale unused, but I don't have a clear limit. Sometimes I push the ISO more then other times. Regardless of PS or not.

However be aware that PS are stitching and averaging 4 images, resulting in lower noise. In terms of shot noise the 4 shots of PS at ISO 12800 equals using a singe exposure of ISO 3200 since the sum exposure time will be equal.

Mysterious lens - what is this? (IR chrystal night vision 0.42x)

I just came across someone selling a lens like this together with some other Pentax K mount lenses. What is it used for? What effects does it give aside from widening the view from the lens its screwed onto?

Is it just a combined focal reducer with an IR filter?

Non-Standard Crop Size in Post?

For screen viewing I may use frames to cover up the parts of the screen I dont want to be visible. For instance with a square crop shown on a 16:9 screen.

For prints, you just print the next size up and crop manually (siccors/knife) and make a custom frame. If you dont print them yourself you probably get better prices when you choose a size that can be printed with as little canvas as possoble. For example, if they have a 1 meter roll and you want a 1,05 meter print, they will have to print it at the length of the roll in stead of the width. Choose 1,0 m and you will save some canvas. Or print several prints at once so you make use of the full width of the roll.

Is Medium Format Worth It?

Depth of field: Medium format lenses in general have smaller apertures then their FF counterparts. If you like the DoF on medium format, just stop down your FF lens to match the DoF.

Sensitivity: Film is way worse then digital. Even when comparing 6x7 film vs FF digital. Some like the "natural" look of the grains, almost like some music lovers like the scratches and noise from LPs over the "sterile" CD sound.

Resolution: 6x7 film may have an advantage in some cases over 645D/Z, at low ISO, but then again, FF digital with pixel shift resolution is even harder to beat. 645D and Z dont have pixel shift resolution.

In my opinion I would want a selection of f/1,4 645 lenses or f/2,0 6x7 lenses before I even considered medium format. What makes my wish even more unrealistic is that I want it to be digital and not cost more then twice of FF. I dont expect to go medium format this decade. FF works excellent with fast lenses.

I have not reported it here yet, but a few months ago I bought a K-1 and a new camera transportation utility, a Tesla model S P85. During the winter I will take and show you photos of it under the northern lights.

Higher CO2 emissions at production - lower in use. With US electric power its break even after 18 000 miles compared to average US gasoline cars. Even in Poland (worst coal power country in Europe) its net CO2 negative to drive electric compared to average polish gasoline cars. I live in Norway and use 98% hydroelectric power.

However its not that simple. Environment is about more then just CO2. The worst points about electric cars are about mining cobolt, lithium and nickel. All with severe impact on local environment and the use of child labor (Cobolt). However Tesla does better then the competition to avoid the worst companies. They also does better then the competition to minimize CO2 emissions from battery production by using renewable energy.

Having said the worst things about electric cars, its time to bring forward the worst from ICE cars. Gasoline has to be produced and that doesnt happen without CO2 emissions or environmental impact. Far from. Actually you can multiply the CO2 emissions by 3 to get the real numbers including extraction, refining and transportation. Then there is the poor energy efficiency in ICE, NOx emissions, particles (diesel gate), and shorter life span due to failing mechanical parts, lots of them ratteling around in that frunk without storage space.

Its also time saving to be able to fill the battery over night at home. I laugh every time I see a gas station price sign and all the cars that stops there. They even stand out in the cold manually holding their "charging cables" for 3-4 minutes in the freezing wind. When I drive more then 3 hours I usually just plug in and go to the toilet and then buy some food. After that I go to plug out and drive. I'm so happy my time with ICE is over. I will never again step in someones gasoline spill and take those smelly shoes into the car, stinking for hours. Not to mention the fresh air in the garage after warming up the car there.

And I havent even started on how it feels to drive.. :D :D :D Its almost undescribable. My advice: try! (Even if the X90DL is a little faster, my P85 isnt a turtle)

Why no compacts with EVF ?

Pentax could also make twin cameras with VF as the main difference. One with EVF, one with OVF. Twin models are less expensive to develop and produce then two completely different models, but also more expensive then having a single model. It could blow new fire into the debate of VF type and make much attention in the press. Good PR and good sales. Single models would be more anonymous. Hybrid models would aditionally have higher development and production costs.

The DA50 is very cheap so the price of repair easily passes the price of a new lens. I suggest to try to open it yourself and try to fix whatever may be bent or broken. Maybe you succeed, maybe not.

I would go for the Sigma 18-35mm f/1,8 Art because of more useful focal lengths for a comic con then the DA 50mm f/1,8.

Go closer and crop slightly when you want closeups.

Don't worry to much about the last sentence. You will get better results at lower ISOs - you just have to wait longer for each exposure.

High ISOs serves a few purposes at night photography. The first is to take quick checks of your files to see if you under or over expose and focus, before you take the real shots with long exposures. One example. Try ISO 3200 f/3,5 1s just to check exposure. Try again if its to bright or dark. Try again to get the right manual focus. This trial and error might take just a minute with ISO 3200. Then adjust 5 stops down to ISO 100 and the shutter speed 5 stops slower 30s to take the good focused low noise images. This saves time compared to try 30s exposures from the start. Highs ISOs are also useful to freeze movement from northern lights or reducing star trails.

Ditch loyalty - you are not married to Pentax. Choose what is best for you. Based on what you write (little use of video, no mention of sports) It looks like K-1 would be an excellent camera for you, for technical reasons, not for loyalty reasons.

The new Guetzli Jpeg encoder is open source and thus much less complicated to implement in software without the need for a team of lawyers.

DA 40mm Ltd or Sigma 30mm 1.4 for night shots?
Posted By Simen1

For streets and buildings, it doesent matter of the focus is slow and the distance is far so too shallow DoF wont be a problem. For people you will probably stop down to f/2,8 or so anyway, and focus is easier. In case of emergency you might want to use the built in flash and a cheap flash mirror to bounce the light of a wall or ceiling. It may ruin the lighting so use this solution with care and not on all shots.

The corner sharpness of the Art is quite good already at f/1,4 and even the EX surpasses the DA40 in corner sharpness when stopped down to f/2,8. The EX should be focused with only one focus point because of the curved focus plane. If not, it will will be confused, hunt and miss a lot.

Personally I would go for any for the Sigma 30's in stead of DA40. I think the DA40 is more for show off for its size. I have both the Sigma 30 EX and the DA 40 SX and i use both. Actually I dont use the Sigma 30 EX anymore because I prefer my Sigma 18-35 f/1,8 over it. But its a heavy beast so I choose the DA 40 XS sometimes because of the size and weight.

I believe one of them are this Tamron 90mm f/2,5 macro:

I cant recognize the other one exactly, but the design looks much like the Tamron Adaptall-2 series. Maybe a "new" variety of the 85-210 f/4,5 or 70-220mm f/3,8
