Poll: Do you see a Pentax Half-Frame in your future? Best of PF Newsletter March 6 Poll

My personal film preferences have generally been to go much larger than 35mm so I doubt this new camera won't work out for me. Of course I learned many, many years ago to never say never. This one was never aimed at my wheelhouse from the beginning.

However, I do hope that this does work out for Pentax and that it leads to a "full-frame" point and shoot and perhaps even more. A similar camera using 120 film to shoot 645 (120 roll film half frame) could be exciting, even for the youngsters. :D

I'll be headed out this afternoon to see how far I can make into a canyon after cleaning up some of this new snow in the yard. I have robins all over the yard and in the trees this morning. The cats are having fits and all three are lined up in front of the patio door. The robins are having fun teasing them. Looks a bit odd to see robins strutting around the yard with 3 inches of fresh snow on the ground but they know it is spring even if we can't tell yet. Unfortunately those pix will have to wait until I finish and develop the film.

Most certainly a different use case and definitely not something you slide into a pocket unless it is a big Parka pocket. That little FA 43 Limited makes them a bit more svelte and the PZ1 handles that lens like a pro. They are great cameras but I don't think they are really a big seller with kids.

Even though I am not in the market for this half frame camera I do honestly hope this works out for Pentax. Who knows what could happen if this turns out to be a real runaway success. Lots of kids buying film made Instax a terrific seller for Fuji. I would love to see something similar happen for Pentax.

Remember to let us all know how it works out for you. I myself was hoping for something a bit different. Not necessarily a K1000 but at least full frame. It may well show up anyway on the heels of this one.

That's ok though, as a way of dealing with my disappointment at the news I picked up a "new" PZ1 off of fleabay for $30 yesterday. I really didn't need it but I'm pretty sure it will go along way toward making me feel better and I still have lots of money left over for film. :D

And it will likely show up in the mail a bit sooner than this new Pentax will.

I guess I won't be bothering with this after all. Half frame doesn't do me any good.

I do wish them luck though.

I'll buy it just like I bought the K1000 way back when, and the *ist D when it arrived.

I only hope it has a good lens.

First off, if something does come out of this I plan on buying one.

Second, I know that we all enjoy our mechanical Pentax SLRs but I really, really doubt that we are the market.

Ask yourself this...what are young kids using to take pictures today? Better yet, what are young Japanese children using to take pictures?

I definitely don't keep up with trends but I very seriously doubt that even my own grandchildren want a K1000, or an LX, I use those cameras regularly and I know they are not interested in them.

Digital and cell phone photography became big because it was instant. Fuji Instax became big because it is instant. I can see the result right now. I can share it right now. My grandson can whip out his cell phone and take 17 pictures before I can answer my own phone. He can probably delete them all just as quick.

I think the first camera out of the gate will be something that will appeal to our kids, not to us. Pentax wants us to buy these for our kids, not for us. And they really want us to buy a lot of them.

I think half frame makes lots of sense. A few years ago I handed my Pentax PZ1p to my 10 year old grandson. He blew through a roll of Kodak Portra 400 in about 5 minutes chasing the cat around the living room. When I developed that roll I had 35 blurry shots of a orange cat's tail and one halfway decent shot of the cat itself, and that was the first shot he took. I scanned it and printed it to 5x7, and it was barely clear enough to stand that much enlargement. He still has that picture.

But we sure had fun watching him blow through that roll of film. You better start asking yourself what your kids or grandkids will be asking to get next Christmas! If it is this Pentax camera then maybe we will get an SLR out of the deal...maybe. I hope that happens but I'm not giving up on my K1000 in the meanwhile.

Yeah, I have always been impressed with everything about that K5iiS. That is really why I still own it I have rented the K-1 and the K-3 after they came out and have not been impressed enough with the increase in image quality to lay down the cash for either camera. It wasn't that I did not like them, in my opinion both of the other cameras were very, very nice, just not nice enough to prefer either one over the one I already own.

Interestingly, the camera is back and Precision Camera did all the clean-up that they were supposedly going to charge extra for in the original estimate. I wonder if they had even looked at the camera before they sent me the original estimate.

Anyway, I am very happy it is back and I would most certainly recommend this company. The actual work that was done was high quality and I am happy with it.

And I am certainly looking forward to many more years with this camera..

Just to bring this to completion. My K5iiS is on its' way home. Tracking shows it will be back here on Tuesday, November 21st. I'll try to be more careful going forward but truthfully the old girl has held up pretty well all things considered. It has been doing what I asked in good weather and really bad weather for darn near a decade. Aside from an occasional trip locally for cleaning it has never given me any problems at all

I guess that all is well that ends well. I shoot way more film than digital but it will be nice to have the camera back again..

I adore my K1000 but in this case a KM is a much closer fit to the Spottie SP. Not to worry, they are both fine cameras and very reliable.

Hope everything works out OK.

Mine was dumb. I knew the battery door was open but was talking to my wife. I set it down on the kitchen counter with the door open, evidently too hard, and the battery door snapped in half. So I guess this is just my camera getting even with me for my stupid move. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. This time I didn't.

I am using my LX almost exclusively right now and I do love that camera. But if I had to select one camera out of the many I own to keep and use in a desert island scenario it would most certainly be my K1000. Over the years I've owned it that camera has recorded many memorable, and not so memorable, moments in my family's life. After all these years I am pretty sure I could take pictures in my sleep with that camera.

After I refused the original estimate they wanted $98 for return shipping and fees. I was ready to pay that just to get the camera back though it was a bit of highway robbery IMHO.

Then, shortly after, another estimate came through for a much more reasonable estimate to repair the broken battery door, which is all I wanted repaired in the first place.

At this point they are still waiting for the part to arrive from Japan so they still have the camera. I am still waiting for the whole thing to be finished.

Why the Pentax Film Camera Project might be successful (article - opinion)

To be truthful I don't really expect anything beyond what we have been told. I do believe we will get some nice cameras even though they won't match everything we would all like to see. But even that has to be very successful for Pentax to go any further. And you can bet money that Canon and Nikon are watching this whole thing very closely, maybe even Fuji.

Don't forget, Fuji has had tremendous success with their Instax film with young people. I really believe we will see something other than the bog standard compact 35mm film camera we all have on our minds.

I sent my K5iiS so they could replace a broken battery door on the bottom. I received a quote for $565. I told them to send it back and then they quoted me $98 to send it back. The final quote was $158 to fix the battery door and send it back which I paid. Then it turns out they don't even have the part and had to send to Japan for that. Still have not received the camera back. We'll see when that happens.

I want a new LX that is better than the old one. And to be completely honest I really don't even care if it has interchangeable lenses or not.

I may be mistaken but I don't believe the Pentax has ever put the LX metering system in any other camera, digital or film. A fully sealed camera with the best auto-focusing lens that Pentax can build combined with the best metering system that Pentax has ever built would almost certainly be my dream camera.

However, as a number of people have already said, we are not the primary market for this camera. What do the young people of Japan really want? I think that if we could answer this question we would have a sense of what Pentax is working on.

I would certainly love to own an LX2000 but, as collectors items, they are correspondingly costly.

However, if that is where your heart and wallet take you get a hold of the Japan Camera Hunter and tell him what you are looking for. He'll probably find you one.

My LX cameras work perfectly well and do not seem to be at any risk of failure anytime soon.

Some of them are getting old though and, since they were built to be used by professionals, could have seen some pretty rough service lives. Used ones may be at the end of their useful life. For those buying a used LX these are things you should keep in mind. I purchased one used body that has since developed some electrical issues. But on the other side of the coin I have three LX cameras that are just fine, my oldest one that I have been using since the mid-90s. It is still going strong and shutter speeds show no signs of slowing. I doubt it will fail soon since it is not used that heavily (less than 60 rolls per year over the past several years), but it is possible it could retire itself sometime soon.

Remember, these cameras are very well sealed so are very robust even under severe use. You could contact Eric Hendrickson to find out for sure but I suspect the problem now is replacing seals and sealed parts that are no longer available from Pentax. You should also be aware that just opening up these cameras for a cleaning and lubrication may cause problems with the weather sealing that could be 40 or more years old by this time. I would be careful having the camera serviced by someone who is not experienced with these cameras.

But they are truly amazing cameras. I love using mine and I have no intention of putting any of them on the market anytime soon. The metering system alone is worth the price of admission in my opinion. The size, feel and weather proofing is just icing on the cake.
