Vintage camera storage

To clarify, I am looking for twenty individual boxes - one for each camera. Think of it as more like the boxes they originally came in, which I don't have of course. So what could I use to protect each camera and would still be easy to open up and "play" with the camera. Right now they are bubble wrapped together in the same box and I don't like the protection or the ease of getting at them. I will still wrap and protect the camera, but just want it in an individual box for neat storage and accessibility.

Looking for ideas to store my 20 or so pentax film slr cameras. Would like an inexpensive box that isn't too oversize so that I could label it and take the camera out for a spin now and then. I really don't have the open shelf space. I have used plastic boxes and bubble wrapped the cameras but the system is bulky and not easy to work with. I don't want to use shoe boxes because the lids don't lock. Any ideas?

Let's say I had a friend who had accumulated - say 40 - nice lenses and wanted to know the best ideas for storing them. I have been - excuse me - my friend has been using old camera bags but it's hard to remember what is in each bag. Are they any other good ideas? It would also be best if my wife - I mean my friend's wife, did not see the scope of this collection.

Which autofocus pentax to keep?

I think I need to scale back my collection somewhat and I wonder about the price/utility tradeoff if I have to keep only one or two of my autofocus pentax bodies. Here is the line-up to choose from. I know which one is the concensus "best" but what is the trade off for price vs value? Anything I might not have considered? I plan to use them and not leave them on the shelf.

1.MZ-S - mint in box - no battery grip

2.MZ-5n - CLA and new improved gears and flash updated - minty

3.SF-1n - mint

4.PZ-1 - mint (not the PZ-1p)

All of them work. Fire away!

What is your favorite K-Mount camera to use with Takumar M42 lenses. I have set aside an MZ-M for that purpose and just leave the screw mount adapter on it. Curious what other people do?

Exposure Metering on Old Pentax Bodies

I have not acquired any of the Spotmatic and older bodies - but I was wondering on the models without metering does everyone just use a light meter or there are some rule of thumb exposure settings you like to use.?

Longevity

As I was looking at my way too long list of pentax bodies in another post, I was wondering what people thought about the longevity of various models. For example, I have a minty MZ-S but I wonder if it is going to be more prone to failure than my K2.

Have done CLA on my KX, K2, MX and MZ5-n (including new gears). I have bought a couple of P3n's because I like them for street photo and I wanted to have a spare since I probably would never fix it if it broke. I mean some of the late models are almost disposable prices.

(You can find my full list in the pentax body poll post)

Any thoughts?

K2 ASA Dial Theory

Yes your last comment Swift is where I am at. I have full range of ISO movement and can use it to set film speed and E.C. The camera is in great shape otherwise and at this time don't see any reason at all to pay to have the ISO locking lever replaced. I don't use the E.C. ring at all since they aren't coupled any longer at all. I have a second k2 with the ISO button (lever) and I can see how they work - it just seems clear that all the E.C. ring does is move the ISO anyway.

K2 ASA Dial Theory

I am going to shoot a roll of film testing my theory - but to answer your question I think the answer is "no" - moving the exposure compensation now is does nothing because it is not linked to the ISO - but since on a properly fitted K2 moving the exposure compensation dial move the ISO it is just a short-hand way of adjusting the film speed - so my point was, rather that move the exposure comp on my K2 just move the ISO - should be the same result. Without the film speed lever/lock, adjusting the film speed is much easier than push this and turn that.

Yellow Takumar

I wanted to confirm what I had heard before, using the takumar lens that has yellowed with black and white film is not a big problem but would be with color?

And what if I use it "as is" on my digital camera - are there adjustments I should follow?

K2 ASA Dial Theory

OK - so much is written about the quirky ASA dial on the K2. I don't intend to take one apart - ever - but I have an interesting take on my K2 and the film speed dial. Generally, to adjust the film speed on the K2 the exposure adjust dial must be at "1" and then you depress the ASA lever and move the dial. When you adjust the exposure setting dial the ASA dial moves in unison, i.e. adjust one exposure and the film speed dial moves one. So the whole purpose of the exposure adjustment ring is to move the ASA dial - so I think.

Well, my K2 does not have the ASA lever - I don't know if it was broken off or what - but I have a theory that maybe it was removed on purpose! The film speed dial moves easily all the time but does not move in sync with the exposure adjustment. So I am thinking all the exposure adjust does anyway is to move the film speed setting to get the adjustment effect. So on my K2 if you use the exposure adjustment lever you have to move the ASA dial also - or just move the ASA dial in the first place for exposure adjustment and ignore the exposure adjustment dial completely - of course you have to remember to put the film speed back again. I know this is a way to adjust exposure on other cameras with the adjustment feature.

So while some may say I have a "broken" K2 - I think I might have an improved K2?

Any thoughts?

I got this lens for free but I notice it has threads on the exterior of the front of the lens. This had no lens cap and I don't know whether I am supposed to get something that goes on the threads or what? It has its own built in lens hood already. So what do I do for a cap etc.

I echo the thought that it may not be the machinery but the people. I have a developer at a local grocery chain who seems passionate about her work and wants to do good work. You just know those people when you see them.

K2 ASA Lever

Thank you all - I have had Eric do 3 jobs for me and I agree he is terrific. Now for the slight variation in the question. To review: the ASA lever is gone on my K2. The ASA dial moves smoothly. By the way, the ASA moves even when the Exposure Comp is at any setting (not just 1x). So when the the Expsure Comp dial is moved it moves the arrow against the ASA film speed. So if I have the ASA at 400 and move the Comp to 1/4 the ASA pointer is now on 100. If I move it to 4 the ASA pointer is at 1600. Soooo, (1) I now assume that on a properly working K2 the ASA dial is locked with the EV setting so that the film arrow still points at the correct ASA regardless of the EV factor (unless EV is 1x - it isn't locked then.) AND (2) I really doubt this affects my picture taking because when I return the EV to 1x it brings the film speed arrow back to 400.

So I think it all works (in some ways better?) but I need to be careful about accidentally moving the film speed but I really need to shoot some film and see how it all works. What do you guys think?

K2 ASA Lever

I have a nice K2 whose only flaw seems to be a missing ASA lever. Am I right that lever just locks the ASA ring so that it can't accidentally slip. The ring moves nicely. So should I still get full functionality from the camera otherwise if I am careful to watch the speed? Thanks "O wise ones"

I acquired (free) some old film in the plastic containers but I don't see any expiration date. If they are out of the box is there any way to tell how old they are. It's good film and I think it was kept in freezer but how old is it?? (Fuji Superia 800)

I think I saw an ad the other day for a stand alone scanner that did not hook to your computer that stored data on a basic camera card. I think it scanned negatives and slides. Now it was supposedly only $100 at Walmart but I was curious if anyone had seen, tried or heard of this. It had some advertising hype, but it sounded intriguing??

Too many film bodies

I have acquired too many film bodies and want to reduce to 2 or 3. Anyone have opinions on which of these I should keep for a balanced arsenal? All are in excellent condition. I want to use rather than collect. I like to use Takumar lenses and black and white film. Longevity and flexibility are important. (FYI - I have K10d and K-x on digital side.)

I see a nice price for a few days on my "dream" red Kx to backup my K10d - so hear is the question. I have been impressed that I can use my takumar lenses on my K10d in Av mode nicely and get focus confirmation (green light). Do those features still work the same on the Kx?
