I think I'm going to hunt down a 18-250 (It seems the Pentax and Tamron versions are basically identical); the prospect of not having to switch lenses is just too appealing. I could see myself skipping a lot of shots because it's not worth it to switch.
I also reserved a Sigma 8-16 rental from cameralensrentals.com; after looking into it, the perspective it offers on architecture and interiors is incredible. Just have to remember to keep my horizon line straight.
And thanks for the Dubrovnik pics. I'll be nearby in Losinj for a good while, and maybe Zadar as well.

Well shucks, after looking at reviews for that lens, it's quite a contender too. And the price often isn't that far off from the 55-300. I had overlooked it simply because I'm quite happy with the Sigma 17-70 (especially the macro capabilities), and didn't want to get another lens that might step on its proverbial toes, if that makes any sense.
The other thing I'm seeing is that on the far end, the difference between 250mm and 300mm is relatively minuscule, and certainly a fair trade for the ability to bring one less lens along. And when I think about the hassle of switching lenses to get a shot in a crowded, pickpocket-infested area, the 18-250 starts to sound like even more of a good idea.
Now my problem is that your post makes me want to get a wider lens for architecture. I suppose I can stitch multiple shots together, although I haven't played with stitch software in a few years. I'm hoping that it's at least as good as the auto-stitching capability of my Android phone. :)

Thanks, I just saw that they have a cheaper version (which also seems to have a plastic mount), but you're right; the quick shift is nice, and I'm sure the hood will be important since I'm bound to be taking lots of shots with the sun overhead.

Howdy all,
I'm going to be travelling in Italy for a few weeks, and I'm starting to think I might want a bit more reach than my current lenses allow for. I was considering picking up the Pentax 55-300, which I think would fit in nicely along with my Sigma 17-70.
Whatever I get needs to play nicely with my camera bag too: A Crumpler 3 million dollar home. I can generally fit the camera (k20d) with lens attached, and a spare lens; anything more and it starts to get a little tight, so lens size would be an issue too.

The bokeh on pic #5 looks like watercolor. That is amazing.

It seems pretty common for 1:2 lenses being marketed as 1.2 on eBay. I'm sure typos happen, but if someone is knowledgeable enough about lenses to post that they have no fungus, they know what they're doing. I've reported a few to ebay but I don't know what comes of it.

I think I looked like enough of a doofus as to not represent a threat to the US of A. Although I admit I did have scenarios playing in my head of being locked in a white-walled room at a table trying to explain my sputnik-looking lens.
Now if I had this lens then I'd really be sweating.

I've got this bag and love it, although I haven't worked out how to get my K20D + 3 lenses in it. But it's got more than enough room for the camera+lens, spare lens, and some cleaning accessories. If I didn't have it already I'd jump on it.
It's a perfect size. I had a 3 million which was way too snug, and functionally this one doesn't feel or look much larger at all.

It depends, sort of like "what kind of seasoning do you like on your food". But in general, I like them as vibrant and colorful as I can get away with, without making look post-processed.

I just got a Lensbaby 3.0 from eBay this past weekend, and it's turning out to be a bunch of fun. Most of the pictures from it so far are just good for inducing a headache, but there have been a few that have come out kind of nifty.

It's all personal taste really, but I think the best HDR is like special effects in the movies; it works best when you don't know it's happening. Also, it's really, really easy to make a HDR image that looks like technicolor barf with the best software, so I can only imagine that in-camera processing at 'default' settings isn't going to look too good.

I would check out Microsoft's Bing cashback program. Here's some info on it from Slickdeals. It's what I used to get a new K20D body from Newegg for $566 shipped (after 10% CB) recently.
Right now, it looks like the best deal is through Regal Camera, and it's $657 (after 6% CB) shipped for the body AND AL II lens. Here's the Bing Shopping link. You'll also see a link to the body-only sales if you change your mind on that. I went body-only to get a Sigma 17-70, but I've also used the AL II kit lens a bit and found it quite good.

You can "rent" one from walmart.com; it's what I ended up doing just to try out a K20D after looking all around Portland, OR for a store that carries Pentax. It's either that or post a 'hey can I tuch ur pentax dslr' ad on craigslist.

Bumping this as a prospective K20D buyer to relate my experience in the Portland, Oregon area. I checked with every nearby camera store, and without exception they've dumped Pentax. Shutterbugs, Pro Photo, Ritz/Wolf, Citizen, none of them. I understand there's a store out in Gresham that may still carry them, but that's a bit of a hike.
The manager at Shutterbugs related that he loves Pentax and wishes he could carry them, but they're impossible to work with as a medium-sized dealer. I ended up having to order one from Wal-Mart.com just to be able see what the damn thing feels like in my hands.
