I was under the impression that under EU law 2 year of guarentee is standard. Is that not the case in Sweden? The consumer law could also be formulated that you as a buyer should have the expectation that the camera should work properly during a reasonable amount of time as that should be expected of such item, I mean to say that here in the Netherlands I could even make a case that a €2000 camera should not fail within even three or four years. Besides that: the mode dial problem must be a known problem to Ricoh, even if they do not say that out loud. You could request your dealer to contact Ricoh and ask for coulance regarding this specific and known problem.

K1 Mode Dial Failure

Follow-up: my camera was away for two weeks before coming back repaired.

The sensor had had a sloppy clean with the small specs that were on the sensor before wiped to the sides but not removed. More annoyingly (and not something I could clean myself) the viewfinder came back with tons of dust specs in it! I was shocked the Nikken France (who do the warranty repairs for Pentax sold in the Netherlands) could introduce dust into my camera. I would have though that any repairs would be in a dust free environment and checked thoroughly before returning to customer, apparently not. So it went back a second time for another two weeks. The shop I bought from, Cameranu, were very apologetic and understanding throughout. Can’t fault them at all. Thumbs down for Nikken though.

My mode dial has gone wonky. Not stuck in M yet but some modes just don’t work and stay in adjacent mode instead. Holding my breath and not touching the dial at all until I have finished a commercial job next week. I’m in the Netherlands so my dealer will probably send it to France for repairs. I trust my dealer to do right by me but have heard negative reports about turnaround times for repairs in France.

And yes, the serial is in the 6356xxx range.

Edit/update: a month later and it is M-mode all the way. I have returned the camera for repair under warranty.

For many people it will be an excellent portraiture option as at the end of the day not many people have a dedicated camera.

Great to see the positive mentions the K-1 gets. Though I can't really stand Tony well and his wife is even less likeable. But that's just me I guess.

what has been your most "disappointing" lens?

I bought A FA 31 new, straight from the online Pentax website. It was horrible wide open, though it was nice starting from 2.8. I’m still not sure what was wrong with it. I ruled out focussing issues and it the problem was frame wide which I assume doesn’t mean decentering. Anyway, I returned it for a full refund and didn’t dare try another copy. A lens that expensive should really be without faults.

I also briefly had a DA* 55 of which the focussing speed tested my patience too much. That was a shame but not as disappointing as the 31.

We disagree but I do not doubt my mental health.

The advice is this thread is excellent but I think my original statement is sound. There is another thread where someone asks whether the K-1 is good for beginners. There is a lot sceptism is that thread while I thing the K-1 is an excellent camera for a beginner, if you have the money go for it. The camera is easy in full auto and will not hamper growth once you want to take control.

But to jump in a challenging situation with a K-1 is something else. I really don't want to spell out all the potential pitfalls as I'm sure most here know them too, but it is a long list.

Camera phones - and I'm talking recent iPhones, Galaxy's,etc - are optimised to squeeze every drop out of every common scenario with no knowledge or experience needed and they do that well. Would a seasoned photographer be able to do better with a K-1, or any semi-decent camera? Of course but that does not appear to be the situation here.

If the lens has a weakness it is indeed how it handles highlights but dialling in a -1/3 or -2/3 EV easily helps that. AF is perfect for me, not fast but not slow either, and certainly accurate.

Your photos look nothing like the other examples posted here, including my own. I can't help but think that there is something wrong with your copy.

I'm not kidding.

The way the question was formulated leads me to believe there is a very good chance OP will get better photos from a camera phone because there is so much that can go wrong shooting a situation like this with a full frame camera.

I don't believe reading the manual will help one bit as the shoot requires an understanding of exposure basics and the abilities and constraints of the camera, which come with experience. I would recommend watching a lot of YouTube videos. And making (backup) photos with a camera phone.

If this is really your question then my honest answer would be that you could probably get better pictures with a recent phone camera. And I honestly do not mean this in a bad way.

You requested unprocessed images. I have placed some here (Dropbox - DA200) to look at. Developed with Lightroom with Huelight Standard profile and only some exposure (+0.85EV) added to the church tower and my daughter on the swing (+1.50EV). The photo of the cat has its white balance warmed (that floor always throws the WB off). Otherwise as is, at full resolution.

As is probably clear from these photos: I am very happy with the DA200 and its performance on the K-1. If you have the room, it’s great for portraits. Hope this helps.

These are the processed version of the photos:

1. Close focus.

2. At full resolution you can see birds flying around the tower.

3. Hard light is a challenge for this lens. I was probably shooting without hood, not sure if that would have helped.

4. Not perfect focus on the eyes but a wonderful shot of another of my daughters. As you can see: the aperture blades are not rounded.

5. Cat’s hairs are always nice to asses sharpness. This photo is a significant crop.

I have the 77mm but should I have the FA 85 f1.4

There was actually a nice comparison done a few years ago. It is in Dutch but the photos speak for themselves: "The 70mm vs 77mm vs 85mm shoot out"

After spending way to much to time looking at it, I came away thinking the FA77 might be a bit sharper but the FA85 produces a nicer OOF rendering.

I have the FA* 85mm and regarding the big hood: I just never use it and have found no adverse effects. Probably also because its not the type of lens I would be using in full sun. I am very fond of it and use it a lot on the K-1, on which the focal length suits me more than it did on aps-c.

Any group — and that includes Pentax users — has its ignorant or aggressive or plain stupid members. To say that is special for Pentax users is wilfully provocative.

As for Tony Northup: he is right to have made the video ‘Attack Of The Pentatians’ because his job is to get youtube views, that is his work, and this will get views because people love drama.

Edit: personally I enjoy being part of the ‘Pentax community’, most of the dedicated Pentax forums have been very friendly in my experience.

K-1 and FA43 Limited

I'm sorry to hear your FA43 wasn't meeting your expectations. Purely from reading your story -- I haven't had the opportunity to look at your photos -- I expect your copy isn't good. My 43 is great on the K-1 and comes even more into its own than on crop.

Bad copies happen; I once ordered a FA31 direct from Ricoh and it was truly horrific under f/4.0, not at all living up to its expectation. The good news is it killed my lust for that (pricey) lens.

Here is a casual wide-open shot wide on the K-1 that I made which IMO has none of the sharpness or contrast issues you describe:

I think the quotes D1N0 used around review apt. I watched it with mild pleasure because I considered it entertainment, sprinkled with some childish humour, rather than a review.

Don’t take it too serious; if you want a serious perspective or even an actual review, look elsewhere.

DA35/2.8 Macro Limited on K-1

One thing that has gone unmentioned: sharpness and contrast hold up very well in the extended FF area though not in the extreme corners.

Personally I have no qualms about using this lens on the K-1 if it suits my needs but I will factor in that I might need to crop and/or remove some vignetting in PP. That is not a problem for me as everything goes through Lightroom anyway.

Basically: as with any lens you need to be aware of its character and traits and therefor of its restrictions.

I'm on my tablet and tbh hate typing on it so I'll keep it short and just add these test shots I made a few weeks ago with the HD version of the lens. Hope it helps.

1. Effect of hood (don't use it)

2. Vignetting

3. Vignetting close/far and open/stopped down

And test shots are all well and good but this is an actual photos off the type I like to take with this lens. Nothing wrong with it at all... This is at minimal focus distance.

Who has emptied their battery, and how long did it take?

I put a fully charged battery from the K-01 in the K-1 when I got it 9 days ago. Yesterday the battery icon turned red and I swapped the battery out for the first time.

At that point I had taken roughly 450 shots, some of those with liveview, some with pixel shift, played around the the settings, tried the gps and wifi, and generally got to know the camera. After about 200 shots I had also inserted a second SD card and set the camera to raw+jpeg, split over the cards. I also, for now, have all the lens corrections turned on.

So getting to 450 on one charge while using all the bells and whistles, seemed pretty darn good to me.

I have. See the same image below which illustrates the problem well. I actually added some red to the shadows in LR via Split Toning to make it less blue than it was! In both images there is some local adjustment on the eye (clarity, lightening) and the RAW had some additional general lighting correction.

This is what Lightroom did with a pixel shift RAW:

And here is the same photo but then taken from the in-camera JPG:

K-1 3rd-party lens compatibility

I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your Sigma. There has been another report of this exact problem with the same lens: Strange issue with first K1 to arrive in Greece: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I hope and even somewhat expect Pentax to address this is a firmware update. While Pentax might not be under any "obligation" they do have a duty and responsibility to its customers. And even if they cannot ensure full compatibility, locking up of the camera should never happen. That is poor programming,

Be sure to file a report to Pentax as I do get the feeling that want to put a lot of effort into the K-1 including updates with future firmwares.
