Equivalency is a matter of time, noise, stable tripod and battery life for still subjects, plus you would add severe amounts of motion blur to moving subjects.

Be careful not to leave it in your car on a hot day. I left mine in a camera bag in the back seat floor board out of direct sunlight on a hot day, and since then the ISO settings below ISO 800 don't reduce the sensitivity. i.e. ISO 100 to 800 all capture exposures like they're set at ISO 800. The sensitivities above 800 still work so the camera is now better suited for high ISO applications.

The same "imagination inflation" occurs at thrift stores as well. Sometimes I wonder if they googled ebay and found listings with crazy over pricing and 'assume" that's what they should get for their worn out and partially functioning donated pieces and parts. :D

Are you referring to the 'pixel pitch' in the displayed image or the 'pixel pitch' on the surface of the physical sensor?

There seems to be many variables to complicate matters when trying to compare and explain noise and SNR between APS-C vs. FF sensors. I'm thinking much of it comes down to the physical pixel size itself when all other things are approximately equal.

Suppose we have two sensors with the same # of pixels which are designed in a similar manner, only one has a smaller sensor size(APS-C) than the other(FF). An optimized design would result in the individual pixel size on the APS-C being smaller to pack in the same # of pixel as those on the FF sensor that would have a larger pixel size to optimize usage of extra area of the larger sensor size.

Using similar on-chip and external IP electronics constructed and shielded in a similar manner could reasonably presume for sake of argument to generate similar noise levels. Having said that, then the individual pixel size on the two different sensors would determine the amount of optical signal(photons) received with the APS-C pixels being less compard to the optical signal(photons) received by the FF pixels by a ratio of the area of their respective pixel sizes when the same exposure it given to each sensor:
(APS-C pixel area) / (FF pixel area)

As a result it's deterministic that the SNR of the APS-C sensor would be reduced at least by the above pixel area ratio. However, you must factor in the derated ISO of the smaller pixel size capturing less light on an APS-C vs. FF that requires a higher gain on the APS-C sensor electronics in order to create the same ISO rating as the FF sensor. This adds additional noise based on the performance of the on-chip electronics. :D

In this case, the above is a couple of reasons why you would conceivably downrate an APS-C vs. FF sensor when the picture frame dimensions are the same due to the additional noise inherent in the APS-C sensor. :)
At lower ISO levels the difference may not be very noticeable, but (again, all things being equal) as the ISO is increased the differences become more quickly noticeable. i.e. although not exactly identical, look at the high ISO performance of small-sensor compact digicams vs. larger-sensor DSLRs having the same megapixel count.

You ask some really probing technical questions! :)

I misunderstood your previous comment about different formats being about file formats, not changing image capture size using the same file format. :)
That said, variations in DR between FF and cropped captures from the same sensor does seem both surprising and perplexing. Also, you may be on to something about how cropped and FF sensors/capture modes ultimately get evaluated for the benchmarks of the testing site.

I can only guess (aka my 0.02) it has something to do with what pixel data is read, how it's processed, and when it's processed. What's happening with noise or signal bleed from adjacent pixels if they aren't read?? Or if adjacent pixels are processed together as one pixel to theoretically reduce its signal to noise, is the IP algorithm doing something different that affects IQ when it also has to be optimized for speedy output??? One could even question the effectiveness of the subject content and lighting being captured to produce images for either laboratory or real world performance evaluations.

Stating the obvious, I would expect to see variations due to RAW files being 12 bit or 14 bit and compressed file formats being 8 bit. :)

Also as more processing power becomes available, interpolation algorithms including dynamic range from RAW to compressed formats along with other performance trade offs tend to steadily improve if the past is any indicator of things to come.

I was referring to both the pixel size and how it can impact the physical sensor size in order to achieve higher image resolutions, and thereby the ergonomic impact on the physical camera size in order to house the larger sensor. :)

I don't think the definition of Dynamic Range has changed, it's just being measured in a more detailed manner over the camera's range of ISO Settings. It reveals any weaknesses in a specific model, especially if the sensor itself is adding extra noise which degrades Dynamic Range.
Here's a nice interactive tool for comparing different DSLRs...

Maybe this is a indicator of things to come in the field of low-light performance DSLRs???
Do you remember the HUGE Pentax 6x7cm SLR camera??? :)

Perhaps future ISO > 1 Million DSLRs will need to be size modified to build ergonomics around jumbo-pixel sensors of greater resolution for photographers needing great low-light performance along with great handling and portability??? It would be an ironic repeating of history if those jumbo-pixel sensors ended up being 6x7cm in physical size.

Who knows, maybe we'll see an ISO > 10 Million club, and at a long stretch for scientific applications an ISO > 100 Million club or beyond for those in the realm of counting photons for lab experiments or narrow band spectral studies in outer space!!!

Technically speaking, I've noticed how RAW Dynamic Range for low light performance can be an important factor to consider measuring and then comparing different DSLR test results to evaluate how well optimized a specific DSLR has REALLY been improved for low light capture.

DPReview has been testing this with respect to 'ISO invariance' affected by the sensor's 'downstream read noise'. This would indicate the overall added versatility of being able to get great and equivalently consistent results using either low ISO + long exposures and high ISO + short exposures.
If you can get the best of both worlds, why not! :) (I suppose we all assume it should be that way regardless, but apparently that's not necessarily the case if the sensor's design doesn't adequately address this issue?)

Some further explanations about this is demonstrated with testing results for the Nikon D5 vs. Nikon D810, and the in-between results of the Nikon D500.
Setting new standards: Nikon D5 Review: Digital Photography Review

I hope they test the forthcoming new Pentax DSLRs this way also!!!

I'd call it a serious contribution to improving the quality of the ISO > 1 Million club with "astonishingly detailed color photo and video capture in extremely dark environments".
Canon's New Full-Frame Camera Can Shoot at ISO 4,500,000
https://petapixel.com/2020/11/04/canons-new-full-frame-camera-can-shoot-at-iso-4500000/

The article says "a minimum subject illumination of less than 0.0005 lux (at maximum 75 dB gain setting, that is equivalent to an ISO sensitivity of over 4,500,000)"

However, it looks like a cube made for industrial video applications that can also make still photos, but the photos are much lower resolution than most of the latest DSLRs, and a cube isn't exactly as ergonomic as most DSLRs either when your application is mainly for handheld night action photography. Also, the price is going to be astronomical since the model it replaces costed $30,000 according to the article. We'll see what happens in April 2021.

That's definitely part of what I'm hoping to see!

---------- Post added 11-05-2020 at 12:15 AM ----------

Here's the type of photo I'm hoping an ISO 1 million DSLR will improve upon and/or allow me to explore more handheld night photography! :)
Although for this image a certain amount of noise seems to add extra appeal to this photo, IMO.
I call this one a "dark recovery" project via photoshop as the image was greatly underexposed at around ISO 6400 and shadow detail had to be pulled up greatly!

I'm considering joining the ISO 1 Million Club with a new DSLR purchase that is ISO > 1 Million capable!

Seeking inspiration and trying to imagine how I can put ISO > 1 million to a uniquely definitvely creative use.
Any ideas?
Got any examples? (please include the camera used and the ISO setting) --THANKS IN ADVANCE!!-- :) :) :)

Also, another relevant question: Does anyone know what was the first DSLR camera to reach or surpass ISO 1 million? The first Pentax?
How about the first compact digicam?
