Medium format isn't for shooting sports anyways. But I would love to have it for formal wedding work.

this is bizarre. The concept is really interesting... the price is okay. It's funded very very quickly... I'll pass personally. But I think it's a really neat product with an interesting gimmick.

I still, very badly, want a way to get a digital back on to a classic film camera, even if it's only an apsc sensor.

I do agree, but I'm not sure we will see Olympus do it in the near future if ever. They are so invested in m4/3 and because of the m4/3 alliance there is probably less R&D costs associated to Olympus which helps out with their bottom line. I'm hoping Fuji will go full-frame, it would be amazing to have all 3 sensor sizes available. I would 100% ditch my Nikon system tomorrow if a Fuji 35mm system was available with the right lens lineup.

The reason I don't think Fuji will do it anytime soon is because they are so invested in the APSC and Medium format formats. They need to keep the GFX going strong. There have been infrequent rumors of a "entry level" medium format body as well. If they could get you into medium format for the same price as a D850, and then have lenses that are "entry level" and sub $1500/e cost (even a 75mm f2.8 @ $800-1000) then I think full-frame gets skipped entirely.

I think it would be amazing, and very smart. If you could get a D850 sized camera, have lenses aprox the same size as FF lenses, and get the price point even closer to the hi-res DSLR's... then you can make a serious case to those shooters. If they can get AF speed and the general speed of the camera to D810 levels then I think the industry gets flipped on its head. If anyone can do it... its Fuji.

I'm very impressed with the company, the firmware update mantra, and product development. Reminds me of google in some ways.

I got my 90mm f2.0 on the way...hopefully Friday!

Funny, I feel the same way with the D810, a 10 year camera with no need to upgrade. I'm not sure about 10 years... but I'll be skipping the D850. I've read the previews, I've watched the videos. Everyone is going ga-ga. I get it, it's a really cool camera. It looks like an incredibly versatile tool. As a wedding and studio photographer I totally understand how appealing this camera is.

I only bought the D810 over the D800 because of the faster/quicker buffer, the AF improvements, the different RAW sizes, and the improvements to video were nice as well. The D850 does much of the same to the D810 with a lot more. But I haven't been wishing for any of those improvements. The only thing I've wanted out of the D810 successor is for me to get the exact same image quality and feature set..but mirrorless. I'd also like the lenses to be smaller...but still full frame. I know I'm not gonna get it :)

Was playing around with my new XT2 and 50mm f2.0 this weekend. The 35mm f2.0 did a little bit of work too...I'm gonna get rid of the 50 and go 56 right away I think. The 50 is a nice lens, but the extra DOF control and the rendering of the 56 felt nicer when I had one before.

local store will no longer accept Pentax gear on trade. They have also stated that they after the current stock of Pentax sell out they will be putting it all on special order and only carrying the minimum for dealer agreement. Sad sad day.

At least they still plan to keep the 645 line in stock.. one day I'll get one. One day...

Very true!

My boss was asking me what camera he should buy and was mentioning he was looking at the D850 and 5DMKiv. He has never held a DSLR before in his life. I mentioned Pentax and Fuji and showed him a couple of models online. He mentioned they didn't look like serious cameras so he wasn't interested in them. He thinks the Fuji looks like a toy, and Pentax is something a grandpa would use. I tuned him out and walked away.

I use Flickr primarily. Luke Kowand | Flickr but using Instagram more and more and more. I typically will post the whole image set form a shoot to Flickr, then do daily highlights on instagram when I'm in the mood. Facebook I usually post the odd one here or there, but I've moved most of my photography posting to Instagram and share out.

I used to use 500px a lot too, but too lazy to upload to multiple placed.

I tried a fun one today, uploaded a few photos to imagur, instagram, flickr, facebook. Sat back and watched what happened and how different the responses were:

Flickr - nothing (not surprising as I didn't tag them)
Facebook - moderate response
Instagram - near instant 25 likes, averaging a few likes an hour now with the odd comment.
Imagur - downvoted like crazy and trolled lol --- edit: the trolling is hilarious!!! Sure they are ripping my photos apart looking for anything to rip on, but I'm just sitting here laughing at the stupidity.

The world went on a roller coaster again this summer. Had a job offer to what was supposed to be the next 5 years, but after 3 months they let me go without warning or without explanation. I'm in a new job now (took 2 weeks to find placement) but it's looking very promising. I had to use my camera money savings to pay the mortgage while I was between jobs as I'm essentially going 6 weeks without a paycheck due to the pay system my industry works in... but hey whatever.

I have done some really cool fitness shoots and have 2 out of 9 weddings left to shoot this year. So good stuff. Had a really fun little shoot last night with some friends, and got a very busy 2 weeks ahead of me photography wise. But man is my body killing me! lol

I picked up a used Fuji XT1 and a prime this past weekend as the Pentax DSLR's are going for a lot of money in the used market locally, I personally don't like buying, especially used, without touching first. It was a fantastic deal and works very well even though it's banged up a bit. Almost in the same condition as my trusty LX which has kept up very well all summer! Aside from when the film advance wind failed on me two weeks ago (which is why I bought the XT1). I got it working again this morning tho.

I thank all for the kind words and encouragement. Which is why I'm resurrecting this post. Friends, even the online ones we don't really know, can be a real good support. Life is a crazy and it's comforting to know we are not alone in our struggles. Many paint a picture of stability and are afraid to admit defeat at times. A friend of mine met Gene Simmonds this past weekend and asked him one question "how do you deal with failure". His response is inspiring and powerful:

"You will experience failure, learn from it. Study why you failed and what mistake you made and learn from it. You will make mistakes, you will never do anything perfectly. But when you learn from it, and teach others the knowledge you’ve learned from your mistakes, that is when you have overcome your failure. Until you fail again."

yea I don't think so either. even the APSC offerings from Fuji are a fair penny...

I remember one of the largest complaints of pentax was the lens lineup, I think Sony's is way worse. Not a strong "affordable line" and the pro line isn't complete (And is incredibly pricey). Pentax at least has the core 3 zooms and an amazing APSC lineup.

The main reason, for me, to go with a hypothetical Fuji 35mm system is the vintage control setup (I love it), the EVF, and the Profoto flash support. If NIkon comes out with a 35mm mirrorless system, no need to look at Fuji for me anymore as it would reduce the money I'd need to spend (Assuming there would be adapters). If Pentax came out with a FF Mirrorless it would be something to seriously look at as an option vs the Fuji. Unfortunately it would cost me more to change lighting rigs than camera rigs, and I can't get the HSS Priorlite's locally... and I only shop local for camera gear.

As someone who owns a D810 and D800, owned a huge collection of Pentax kit, and a Fuji XT1 kit (along with playing with Olympus and Sony as well...all 2013-2015 offerings) now own only Nikon and film Pentax. I am also looking at getting Fuji again... see my other topic on why. and it has very little, if nothing to do with image quality. Pentax, Nikon, and Fuji all help make beautiful images. In fact, I made custom profiles for my Nikon RAW's to get close to my Fuji files and then adjusted to taste.

The reasons I see to take Fuji over Nikon/Pentax full frame is because of the portability, size, and weight. When it comes to image quality they are different, but very similar and just depend on what you enjoy shooting more.

I lost my love for Pentax after getting into Nikon. The D810 is the best DSLR I have ever owned or used. Period. The XT1 however is the most enjoyable camera I have ever used.

No matter what I do during the remainder of 2017 and 2018 I will be buying an XT2 and 2-4 lenses. I will no longer invest in Nikon or Pentax at this time. Mirrorless is the future. I will hold out until January maybe to see if any of the rumors of a full frame Fuji/NIkon/Pentax mirrorless get any stronger before making a decision... but the XT2 is firmly in my sights right now and has been for a while. I'm mainly a wedding and portrait photographer too. :)

TLDR: I miss my X-T1 and I wanna sell my Nikon gear and replace it with an XT2 kit. I only shoot professionally as of late.

2015 - I'm flying high, getting lots of cool creative photo gigs and some well paying wedding stuff, I got a cushy corporate day job. I have 3 kits... Penax K3/K5 kit, XT1 kit, and my Nikon D810/D800 kit. My lighting is Profoto B1. It's a great time.

2015 - I lose my cushy day job, I don't have enough photo work to go full pro, and I'm building a house so I need a new job. The new job takes up an extra 30 hours a month and I stop taking as many photo jobs. (less than a third). I house build also gets a little pricey so I start selling gear. All my Pentax gear (aside from my LX and FA Limited primes) get sold as I stopped using them almost 100% after I got my XT1... then it got real hard between the XT and the D810 kit. I ultimately decided on keeping the Nikon kit due to the full frame sensor, mega pixels for large prints (printing wedding portraits in the 5 foot long area often enough) and compatibility with my lighting.

Now the XT-2 is out and Profoto is coming out with a Fuji compatible trigger... The XT2 solves 90% of my very short list of issues with the XT1. I was planning on getting one with this Christmas already to fill in as a holiday trip camera... but now I'm debating on getting rid of all my Nikon gear and buying XT2. I've already talked with my local camera store and I'm about $1000 owing on replacing all my NIkon with equivalent Fuji.

Big reasons why I want to do this?
1: The EVF and working with it is amazing. I prefer it actually. Seeing a preview of your exposure live is fantastic, especially for events and weddings.

2: The size. by the end of the day shooting a 10 hour wedding my body hates my Nikon kit. It weighs an absolute ton! The Fuji kit would be near half the weight.

3: I would not need to buy into a second kit just for casual and holidays. I hate bringing my Nikon out for holiday or road trips, and I never shoot it casually because of the weight/size. It's so obtrusive. I actually grab my LX and 31mm FA more for casual than my D810.

4: Fuji has some of the best color rendering out there!

5: 4k video

Why I don't want to do this:

1: Full frame vs APSC. There is something to be said for the FF advantages

2: Still less mega pixels. Which worries me for those large prints that I do.

3: DSLR reliability

Note: none of the reasons are for image quality. it's all user experience....
