I have 3 MX's -- can't have too many of a good thing, although two of them have to be sent in for a tuneup and a little makeover. I have no dearth of manual lenses for them, so there's enough to go around. I don't know if it's just that I'm a kool-aid drinker when it comes to MX's, but I believe that the photographs that I take with them look somehow better and have more of a radiant halo than the ones from my other film cameras. I bet that at least a few of you MXrs have the same feeling. ;)

Precisely! Except that after Eric gets through fixing them up, there is no beater... You'd probably have to choose your beater camera via the eeny miney mo method. ;)

I sent mY MX to Erik last year and it came back cleaned and upgraded to the hilt. I have two other MX's and I've been planning to send those to him too. Can't have too many MX's, especially since we can rely on Eric to help make them worthwhile.

igowerf, I tried Ritz Camera too and had the same experience. My experience with mpix.com was generally good the first two or three times, but in the last batch the photos that I took with a Canon 7e were scanned at a relatively low resolution, perhaps because I used recently expired 400 ISO film. On the whole, I would recommend that you give them a try. There is also a local lab in South Florida, Dale Laboratories, that is very good with prints (and they also develop B&W and slide film), but I don't know if it would be useful to you all the way in California.

Actually, I don't have a scanner; I simply send the rolls to mpix.com. They develop the negatives, print them and send me the negatives, the prints and also a cd with the jpegs.

Here's another view of Hammocks Park. I kept it large to retain the detail that the MX provides, even with a shot taken with a 28mm f/3.5 lens at deep DOF focus.

Yes, the bottom fringe of the clouds comes out a very light sunset pink in the print version. I can also see the effect on my monitor. Perhaps just a question of resolution or monitor interface. One good thing about the MX is that it only needs batteries for the metering system, and these last for years. Running out of film remains a problem, though, with analog cameras: As you walk away, rewinding the spool, suddenly you're seeing a whole bunch of great shots you can't take because you're all out. :(

1981? Makes sense; being colorful and stylish - not depression black like everything else in 'fashion' today. I actually just bought it new from Amazon. Apparently there's a retro movement to go back to 1981, a year I liked.

By the way, if we're still more concerned with photography than with fashion statements, I just posted three MX photos of Indian Hammocks Park (Miami) in the Users Photo forum. Here's one of them. Love those low pink clouds!

Ah, had I only had that precise actual pixel number before. With all these sites asking for smaller ones. They say third time's the charm. Here it is. Hope it finds a sweet spot.

Ah, you're a hard taskmaster, Mo! ;) But that'll show me not to get too arty with stock photos like this. Will try again and re post. I take it the size at least was o.k. this time, huh?

I would like to contribute with this photo of my Pentax 28-80mm lens to the lens review forum. If this is too big, please let me know so I can upload a thumbnail version.

That MX I got from ebay is just back from the Pentax repairman. Eric left it as good as new or better - a rejuvenated camera, like it's 1980 all over again. While waiting for it I got a motor winder. I plan to take it out this weekend for the crucial shooting test. I also lucked out in a related ebay purchase: one seller threw in some A lenses(50mm f/1.7, a 135mm f/2.8 and a 28mm f/3.5 - all Pentax, all in apparently excellent condition), and a large Lowepro bag that holds two cameras! Since I already had a used SMC 50mm f/1.4 and 100mm f/2.8, along with a new 35mm and 28-80mm, why I'm pleased as Punch. So pleased that I managed to get a good price for a second MX, to keep the first one company in the big bag. After all, now I've got too many manual lenses for just one MX. Once I take some inaugural photos I will have mpix scan them in for me, and I will post them, somewhat belatedly I know, in this forum. Thanks all at Pentax forums for the great advice I received in my previous three threads on the subject of the MX.

Great new test shots from 'new' MX

Next item to buy when I get back from the poorhouse: a film scanner! Up to now I've been sending my photo projects to mpix.com and having them scanned and copied to a cd. The test photos I took were of common household items and outdoor surroundings. I just wanted to test the camera and lens performance for contrast, resolution, colors, overall image quality and dynamic range. That way I was immediately able to compare the image on the prints to easily accessible "models" (e.g., a lit lamp, an ornate curtain, backlit neighborhood trees, etc.).

But I promise to post the photo series that I plan to take with the MX when it comes back from the shop (and after I send the negatives to mpix.com).

By the way, if anyone can recommend a good affordable film scanner (if there's such a thing), then you have my attention. :)

I just got 24 exposures back from BJs that were taken with a recently purchased MX. Even after having to clean out the decayed sealing foam, the photos are fantastic. No effect of light filtering is discernible on the prints, despite the lack of foam lining. The fact that the camera is heavier than the modern models apparently makes it a more stable shooting platform: the sharpness, even with 400 ISO film, is outstanding in comparison with other cameras I have. I can't wait to see how it will shoot when it comes back from the Pentax repair shop. :)

What batteries for Pentax MX winder

Thank you all. That's one less thing to worry about. Another is that I'm receiving the shipment from Canada "express." The tracking information reads that the item was posted in Missassauga (sp?), Ontario on 5/17 and was just received at Lindsey, Ontario on 5/22!! And I'm in South Florida USA!! It seems I have a long wait ahead. Glad they sent it "express," though. :(

Thanks, Shawn. I'm pretty sure it's got to be four AA alkalines, but better to be safe than end up with a frizzy-fried winder.

I just got that Pentax MX from ebay, and I'm getting a winder for it. The user's manual for the winder manual, however, describes the batteries as four 6V manganese (?) or alkaline "penlight type batteries." This I take to mean what are now called AA alkaline batteries. Is this correct? Or is the manual talking about a difficult to find set of batteries for the winder??? :hmm:

I already e-mailed Eric. His shop will not only reseal the camera but also doing other recommended maintenance, so that's another reason for me not to do the resealing myself.

Thank you all for the advice and recommendations. On closer inspection, it appears that the metering system may need some calibration, as they light turns red when it appears it should be green or at least orange. I'll e-mail Eric asap. ;)

By the way, I forgot to ask: do you know of any recommended Pentax-savvy service centers that I could send it to, or is this something most camera service centers may be expected to handle?

Thanks for the advice. And I agree. The seller advertised it as 'Excellent plus, according the "Shutterbug rating system." He was probably referring no to Shutterbug publication but to a camera reseller with a simlar but not identical name. Gunk liner does not qualify as Excellent plus in my book.
