I do know you can't use the 8 element on an ESII body.

What great film gear acquisition did you score?

Apologies to those who saw my previous post this elsewhere on the forum, but I thought I'd drop this here as well

I was looking on ebay for a hardcopy instruction manual for my MZ-S when I came across this time capsule 'New in Box' MZ-S. It was an opportunity I couldn't miss!
That it was officially imported into Australia by long-time local Pentax distributor CR Kennedy is a bonus.

According to the seller it has never had a roll of film through it! It may or may not have, but regardless I doubt there's a better one in the world at the moment!

I doubt my 1 year warranty is valid through. ;)

Recommend me a decent UV filter?

Extra layers are only useful if they reduce reflections as I consider filters as sacrificial lens protection.

So one more layer (ie the water and oil repellent layer) on each side as the previous poster suggests. Certainly a useful addition so long as it doesn't affect light transmission and reflection.

Thoughts on finding an LX and keeping it running

I asked myself the same question and after a lot of research and speaking to a camera repairer (who recommended against an LX), I opted for an MX.

I also have a Z1P - although having recently bought an MZ-S, I may sell the z1p because I don't need 2 autofocus SLRs.

Ambrose Camera Service in London Court, Perth, Western Australia. I'd highly recommend Clinton. He's mentioned in this article: Film cameras make a comeback as new generation falls in love with analog photography - ABC News

Aha, that's it, thanks.
I think I could attach that to my flash with a rubber band and put it to use!

Did Pentax ever have

The Q series were pretty advanced for the sensor size they used.
I still have my Q7 which handles like, and has pretty much all the features of a DSLR with a backlit 12MP sensor.

I tested it against a K10 I had at the time and the image quality was comparable.

The interchangeable lenses included a fast prime, wide angle zoom, standard zoom and 70-210 equivalent f2.8 zoom.

If you wanted to buy ONE *modern* lens for an analoge Pentax, which one would it be?

Why does it need to be a modern lens? If lack of AF is not a dealbreaker, there are so many mint condition K, M, A lenses that would be a good fit for the MX.

Pre-AF lenses, being also made of metal, would match the MX's aesthetics.
Many older lenses also resolve well on a digital sensor.

But if AF capability is a must for use on digital cameras, then an FA43 would match the MX's small form factor nicely.

My MX with an M24-35 f3.5 mounted.

I had my ESII repaired recently (in Australia). The tech fixed an electrical issue caused by corrosion and recalibrated the light meter.
It works perfectly now. It cost about AU$200.
He said the ESII is a much easier camera to repair than an LX and more likely to stay repaired!

How to evaluate and test garage sale finds?

Start by putting batteries in and seeing if the meters work and match up with readings from a camera that you know works correctly.

Fire the shutter and check that 1 sec, 1/2 sec and 1/4 sec shutter speeds seem about right.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but if you're still looking there are some very nice genuine leather half cases available on ebay from Chinese suppliers.
I just got this one. It fits perfectly and is much better quality than the pentax original case.

Pentax announcement: Considering developing new film camera
Posted By Spock

I don't think half frame would be a success. Firstly, the nostalgia people feel is for 35mm film cameras, and secondly, many of us film camera enthusiasts shoot slide film.

Why new cameras are needed is because the youngest film cameras you can buy used are now at least 20 years old and reliability is not where it needs to be for them to be 'daily drivers'.

I'd be happy with an updated weathersealed MZ-S with dual control wheels or a Tv/Av switch added. Or an LX-N or SuperA/SuperProgram-N with improvements and additions to their original designs - like exposure lock buttons and matrix metering.

That's fair enough in the situation you describe. However, in my case I have 1) some lenses that are worth quite a bit more than $200, and 2) a number of vintage lenses, that while not especially expensive, are rare and hard to come by in very good condition (perhaps because many owners didn't use protective filters ;)).

Chips in the glass or marks in the coating (sometimes caused by cleaning) are much more common than shattered glass. I've never shattered a filter in 40 years of owning pentax lenses but have had a number of filters develop small blemishes - sometimes without even knowing how it happened.

Thanks to protective filters, my lens' front elements however have always been, and still are (touch wood), unblemished despite using my lenses in a variety of conditions from sandy deserts, to humid tropical jungles, to smoggy and dusty third world cities, on mountain climbs, motorcycle tours, etc.

Legacy Flash not working correctly on K3-3

It's strange that the K3-3 doesn't adjust the aperture and sync speed - at least on my and 'originalwinger's' cameras. It would be good if some more K3-3 owners could investigate how their cameras behave with legacy automatic flashes.

I know it's a contentious subject for some reason but a protective filter is cheap insurance against damaging the front element of your expensive lens. Just recently someone was selling an otherwise mint condition f2.8 zoom on the forum, with the sad qualifier that it had a small chip in the front element from a piece of gravel thrown up against it.
I myself once had an ostrich, of all things, peck the front of a wide angle lens and leave a permanent mark in the coating. Lucky I had a filter on the front which I replaced for a new one. Try getting a quote to replace the front element!

My advice is buy a quality uv filter like a hoya super hmc and you'll forget it's there except when you have to clean haze, sand or moisture off it.

Yes, that works. But strange that the K3-3 doesn't auto set the speed and aperture like earlier DSLRs.

Thanks for that. It would be unlikely both our cameras have a fault.
