Unfortunatly yes, typical romanian.

The good news is that now the front focus problem with all my lenses is gone, it seemed the sensor was not in the right place in the first time.

Samsung GX-20 sensor problem or not?

Thanks guys for the support.

I received the camera yesterday and I did some tests at night. Now everything is as it shod be. The only drown back was that they did not changed the camera but the PCB + sensor structure and the body is the same. Nothing wrong here but as nonprofessionals as they are, I found A LOT of dust inside which was quite difficult to clean (but in the end, that was also resolved).

To be honest I've tried 11 months to convince them to resolve the problem and was not acknowledged by Samsung Romania. In the end I recorded the conversation with the boss there which started to yell at me in the middle of our conversation and in the end I remained him of that; I god a mail next day to send the camera in warranty  and the rest I told you already.

On the papers, I received the same funny thing as usual: "we did not find any problem with the camera, the descried problem is due to sample variation, and to avoid it you should use the camera between ISO 100 and 400" LOL

I'm very satisfied with my camera now, but this will be my last Samsung product ever bought from Romania (I hate passing through the same circumstanced with the warranty, if there is a problem with the product).

Best regards to all of you

Hi GlennG,

Thank you for the advice "please continue to insist on the repair or change". After almost one month they decided to change the sensor and circuit board from the camera. I hope they can put it back together again...

Samsung GX-20 sensor problem or not?

Thank you for the response GlennG.

Samsung representatives from Romania tried to convince me that the camera is OK, and the phenomena described by me is a due to the "sample variation", and they recommended me to shot lower than ISO 400 ;). This was the official response! I tried to reason with the store manager but he started to get angry and yell at me on the phone  .

Anyway, I managed in the and to send the camera in warranty about a week ago but I got no answer yet, and I'm afraid they will make another excuse not to change the camera, or repair it.

Samsung GX-20 sensor problem or not?

Hi,

I bought the camera about 1,5 years ago. In the beginning was fantastic, no problems what so ever, perhaps a little bit of banding.

It all started about a year ago, when the corners started to get a magenta cast from ISO 1600 and up. Now I have an elliptic structure of a magenta cast in all images from 1600 and up.

The problem can be seen in the images below. I tested the camera complete covered with the lens cap and visor cap, both in RAW and JPG at ISO 6400 (for the problem to be seen more clearly). The last image is a real life scene, an processed in any way image, just resided (once again the magenta cast is there, not as pronounced, because is at ISO 1600 but noticeable and disturbing for me). I get the elliptic effect in all pictures.

Is it normal, or is a sensor fault and should be repaired in warranty?

Please excuse my writing, English is not my native language

With respect, Alexandru

Photozone.de and K-5's resolution

Dude, in your example the K5 is out of focus (it is so obvious I wonder how you can't see it).

In the examples below you can see the difference in detail both in RAW and jpg from K5 vs D7000 - 60D and D300s. I took the liberty of magnifying them to 400% (with zoom, not resizing) for you to be able to see better. For the resolution comparison K5 is in the upper left. My settings for raw were 0 NR and nothing else. The jpg files were untouched.

The last image illustrates the noise at minimum ISO for each of the cameras (k5 is right down this time, sorry).

I also made a comparison with the K7 (not included here) and the K5 has a clear better resolution. My only thought is that your lenses have back or front focus and it is obvious if you shoot a plane to get soft image, that's not from a strong AA filter but from a slightly blurred image. This problem is persistent in most of the images also from Imaging-Resource, just look at the model pictures for each camera (k5 has a clear front focus).

Thanks for the advice, but I got everything I found already and there aren't so many as you say. The most interesting one was with a kid at ISO 12.800, but if I'm not to greedy :D I want more real life photos in DNG format (if is not to much to ask).

Hy guys,

I can't wait until Imaging-Resource posts it's RAW files. So please, I ask the people who already got their K5's to post as many DNG shots as they can. I who'd enormously appreciate this (I'm interested in ISO 80, 1600, 3200, 6400 and 12800 in particular) and I don,t want any special ISO tests, just real life pictures, that's all.

THANKS!

Now that you've mention it, I've cheeked my K20 gallery (actually GX-20 gallery) and found the picture to be progressively lower in quality from the date K-5 was announced :D.

Pentax K-5 vs Nikon D7000 image quality

Hy guys,

I don't post very often because most of the time my ideas are very well presented by other forum members, so why bother :D...

Like many of you I wondered myself what camera should I buy, because my old K20 was very good on his time but it fells outdated now. I can't afford a FF nor do I wish one even if I had the money to spare (I have my reasons but I don't want to debate now).

So, I thought about Sony A55, Nikon D7000 and Pentax K-5 as possible chooses. After carefully studying each camera (and still owning Pentax glass) I decided that K-5 is the choice. In my country the price is only 50 dollars more expensive than D7000 and because I see a difference in IQ between them, for me it is the logical choice.

I guess most of you are well in not very well informed about the K-5 capability's and it makes no sense to debate them all over again, but one ting which I discovered accidentally (actually it was more of a self provocation after GordonBGood insisted that Pentax k-5 was using NR above ISO 1600 in RAW files, and I could not believe the amount of detail still kept so I researched below ISO 1600 in ISO 100/200 territory).

My answers are cleared now, from what I've seen Pentax K-5 has indeed a stop advantage over D7000 even at ISO 100. In the image below I magnified 4 times the original crop from as a precise levels of gray as I could (the histogram for each image square has the peak almost in the same spot)...

The rest I think anybody can jug for himself. Anyway, similar tests can be made by anybody, so fell free to make your one conclusion, don't believe me.

I've done similar tests between K-5 and D700 (this time) and D700 was 1/3 or 0.5 stops better in the middle gray's than k-5 but k-5 has lower red/magenta noise at all ISO's in the blacks.

new camera predictions

Hi guys,

Sonyalpharumors predicts that the new Alpha 55 will be a monster: sonyalpharumors | Home .

As anybody can imagine, the 16+ Mpix sensor may be used in the next Pentax K5, but what about the statement referring to Alpha 55 High ISO: "ISO100-25600, ISO6400′s noise just like a900′s ISO400"?

If that's true, than the K5 may be a stop better at ISO 6400 than the almighty Nikon D3s :hmm:

Dear Pentax,

Please be aware of the next release of the Niko D90 successor: Nikon D95, Coolpix P7000 | Nikon Rumors but also be prepared with a strike from Canon (with their D60 release) and Sony (with A55 and translucent mirror and very good movie capabilities), the other competitors for this segment of market.

If you can not bring these time a competitive product at a good price point (please keep in mind that the new Nikon is possible to be released aground 1200 USD), I'm afraid that you will lose a lot of customers and many (like me) will be forced to change their system (I currently own a K20 and next spring I mustl update it, to remain competitive on my work).

The things I think you must put in the K7 successor to remain competitive are:

- Under 1300 USD price point,
- New sensor with improved IQ (better high ISO capabilities and better DR),
- New and much more improved AF system (the K7 AF is even worse than the Nikon entry level D3000) with more than 11 AF points and preferably with AF taking (I personally love this function is Nikon lineup),
- Tray to improve the NR algorithms, at least a little bit,
- Bigger Buffer and much quicker response from the files which are written on card (or viewed), especially RAW files.
- 1080p with at least 30 fps,

The things I think you must keep in the K7 successor to remain competitive are:

- Weather sealed body,
- The second connection for flash (which is great),
- Lens adjustment option (this little option determent me not to buy D90 instead of K20 about two years ago),
- Please put the SR button on the camera body again!!!
- Keep the color profile and the new auto WB form K7.

In the end, if you address those suggestions and keep the price right I bet you will have a lot of happy clients. In the rest you can do whatever you like with the camera, I'll be happy to buy it.

With best regards, Alexandru

Sorry I wanted to say VR (from Vibration Reduction) not WR.

And I think you can imagine that not all the shots are with the flash, about half I shot in natural light (with noise) to preserve the atmosphere and I need to quickly change the SR option (ore whatever you call it).

Anyway, this is my wish, I hope no harm done :D

"mattdm", I respect you opinions, but what I sad earlier is based on my real needs, not some fantasy wishes.

P.S. About the VR (Vibration Reduction button), is also a necessity for being there on the body, and not berried on the menus. On my work, most of the time I use external flashes, and if I let the VR on, images are blurred and it is very inconvenient, no offense but the Pentax VR is not that grate at all (especially if you let it on for flash photography).

For me, if Pentax addresses those issues it will be the perfect camera for that price point and I will buy it in a heart beet!

Dear Pentax,

I wish that the successor of K7 to use the same body as the K7 but the following changes:

1) APS-C sensor not bigger than 14 Mpix but with ISO 3200 as good as ISO 1600 on the K20 (yes, K20 not K7 witch is actually worse).

2) Please improve and balance the NR algorithms (on my K20 are as nonexistent, on the other hand in K7 you get sharper image on higher ISO than lower ISO - very strange).

3) Make a camera that exposes correctly not most of the time under-exposes!

4) And please put the WR dial switch on the camera again (it is very plainly always to dig for it in the menus).

5) Make a decent 1080p with at least 30 fps if not 60 fps movie mode!

If you can address all those suggestions, I wold gladly buy the camera for 1200 dollars immediately, and I think I'm not the only one!

From what I've speculate, the successor of K7 will be released these year...

Well, if you wonder where did I got the information, it is simple: there is a camera circle for every manufacturer, and Pentax has released the K10 in September 2006, K20 in January 2008 and the K7 in may 2009...

The pattern here is 1 year and 5 mounts between releases. So if they stick to this pattern, the next top of the APS-C line will be announced in September this year, and from what I've seen in the past releases of the Kx and 645D, Hoya will bring us a very good product at a tempting price!

14 bits of color it really is 4 billion colors! Read the 123di for more details...

Hy everybody,

I know that the camera's are much more then the sensor inside them, but man can not close his eyes when he sees how brilliant the little Kx does in comparison to the Full Frame (and muuuch more expensive) Sensors.

I made a collage of images at high iso's at both RAW and JPG settings, and the results are very clear: The Kx sensor is between (less than) a stop and 1 stop difference when compared to Nikon D700 and 5D mark 2, an almost equal at high ISO's with the 5D.

A fear comparison between Samsung and Nikon D300 with the exact same settings at the same time: ISO 1600, 1/8 sec, f/8, 24 mm zoom and 5000 K wb.

From my point of view, Nikon has more noise and a little bit more per pixel sharpness (possible because of the stronger AA filter in the Samsung camera). As a witness for the scene, the colors are almost 100% accurate on the Samsung (as my eyes have seen the scene).

I don't understand why so many people are complaining about high ISO on Pentax K-20/Samsung GX-20, because it's the best you can get with any APS-C DSLR out there...Well at least in RAW mode.
I really love the Samsung 14,6 Mpix sensor, it has outstanding colors, very good resolution and very very low noise (for an APS-C).
It's quit interesting how such a good sensor can give so poor jpg results (unfortunately)...Well, counting the low price, some sacrifices must be made.

The images are unmodified RAW files, converted with Lightroom and cropped in Photoshop, the first image it is a good case scenario (with plenty of light), the image in the left is a 1:1 unprocessed RAW with no NR applied and in the right the same image but with some color NR applied; the second image is taken at night with the worst possible noise in the shadows (the image in the left is without NR and the one in the right with color NR applied). I cross my hearth, the nose/detail ratio is outstanding for the Samsung GX-20 sensor, and I also made a lot of comparison wit the excellent sensor form Kx and the results are very similar at ISO 800,1600 and 3200 (I'm open for other opinions).

I opend this Thread for Samsung GX-20 owners who want to get the best out of their camera, and compare the results with Canikon completion...
