For action I'd set the camera to use the central focus point only and treat my subject as a target. That way, C.AF has a chance to get it right and you're putting your subject in the sharpest part of the frame.
Sometimes things move too fast for that to be reliable. If they do, put up with a low percentage of keepers or switch to manual focus (look up trap focus if you are not aware of the technique - it does involve you being able to read the game you're watching quite well). If using AF for this kind of thing, I would always use only the centre AF point.
Or you could always remortgage your house and get a Canon 1D-X, then realise you're still only getting a low percentage of keepers - you're just getting them at 14fps instead. :)

Here's a more off-the-wall option: If you want a walkabout lens (and because you mentioned the Zenitar 16),
how about a Samyang 14mm/2.8 which you set to shoot hyperfocally so you don't need to worry about focus.
It's also a decent video lens if you're into that sort of thing...

Thanks for the replies guys, I gave SRS Microsystems a call, and they hadn't heard of a similar problem. They suggested I take the camera out at the weekend and shoot a lot but if it happens again and especially if it becomes more regular I should send it back for Pentax to take a look at. Their fear is like mine, however, if it's not happening very often then Pentax won't find it upon inspection.
I'll post here if anything further occurs.
Thanks!

Hi All,
It's been a while since I've been on here but I thought I'd chime in with a little question. I've recently purchased a K-30, and I have noticed a peculiar problem when doing a lot of shooting. Occasionally the control wheels will 'lock in place' in software. Physically they are fine, but the camera won't register my turning them. The first time this happened I was photographing an event and I panicked to the core of my being for about 4 seconds (I must be getting slow) then turned it off and on again. All was fine. It's happened a couple of times since, and my response has been the same.
Now, I was thinking of upgrading my other camera to a K-30 as well because - frankly - I think it's a great camera. The K200D come again with blistering high ISO performance, but I'd like to touch base with you guys first to see if there's anything peculiar going on.
Is this a known problem with the K-30 to which we can look to a firmware update fix (I don't think so, I haven't seen any other reference to it in my travels) or do I have a very marginally faulty unit?
J-P

Honestly, I think the D3 version was the funniest, some of them just don't cut it. This one is funny though. Probably should have done a Hitler as RiceHigh vid though...

The moral of the story is 'if you look hard enough on the internet you're bound to find someone even dumber than Ken Rockwell'.

Hmm, good info for me. I have not needed a CLA yet, I was just in the progress of thinking about doing it and looked around. I didn't know that the original 645 was still handled by Pentax themselves...
Thanks!

I am based in the UK and a google search has delivered no results. Who would still perform a good quality CLA? Would anyone still be in the business?

EVERY thread is an SDM thread.
By the way, high ISO on my K-7 is vastly improved, well beyond K-x levels, by using Pentax brand batteries. ;)

It's pretty common knowledge that CCD sensors with no/weak AA filters produce far better sharpness at 100% than CMOS sensors. It's reasonable to assume that the 645D will share the same trait. It's like saying 'the next Nikon top-line model will have great high ISO capability', not known for sure but also not surprising. We're talking dog bites man here and not man bites dog.
Anyway, with all this 'buzz', looks like Pentax are going to have to hire some more Vietnamese!

Ken Rockwell got a couple of his specs wrong (e.g. complaining about the existance of LV on the camera? there is no LV!). He slams the sensor size, it's a standard sensor used on other machines. He slams the SD card use (well, he may have a point there), OTOH he doesn't even mention the WR and skirts over the fact that it's half the ****ing price of any of the competition.
Interesting review by Ken, but mostly for what it tells us about him rather than about the camera.

Indeed, ogl. I will. I just like speculating. That's why I'm here. Hell, I'm not going to buy the bloody thing. I can afford MF digital about as much as I can afford a crack addiction. I'm not techy enough to make much sense in the sensor discussion. Speculating on lenses is the only form of high available to me here :-)

So, soon we'll know. What interests me most, and has got little attention here, is the line-up of 'DFA 645'(?) lenses that suddenly appears with this camera. Will we be looking at another APS-C 'theoretical lens collection' for a few years or will they pull their finger out? I'm guessing, what with the slow-down on APS lenses, that we'll have three or four 645 lenses pushed out in short order...
....anyone like to make any guesses? We already have the 55/2.8...so, a macro? a zoom? a WA prime? and a LS? Let's play the lens version of sticking the tail on a donkey for a change...
My thoughts...all rebadges or minor redesigns with WR as the main 'new' thing. Camera to have WR.
35/2.8
120/4 Macro
45-85/4.5
80-160/4.5

The best way to work out is a Pentax rumour is true or not is to work out if it's
a) a reasonable idea
or
b) fulfilling a need in a timely manner.
If it's either of those things, you're bang out of luck. Alas, this 28/2 is a good idea and would be a timely introduction to the range. Draw your own conclusions...

Falc, sometimes I wonder...is there any part of photo technology of which you do not have magical secret knowledge?
I mean, when something hasn't been released you're as clueless as the rest of us, but as soon as it's in the wild (I'm thinking of the K-7 as the first example that comes to mind, that AF testing you did must have been read by a huge proportion of this board!) you swiftly become the resident 'geekipedian in chief'.
Incidentally, the above is me in awe of you, not mocking you. Your posts are always useful, if regularly beyond my pay grade, technically-speaking. And they're in your second language.
