Well first off, if you go to an African LION Safari and come back with a photo of an Eagle your doing it wrong!

Ha Ha!!! Just kidding!

Image is pretty good but it's over exposed. You might be able to tone it down with some PP. It could also use some sharpening. If you fix those things this would be a great shot!

Here are some fireworks shots from this past weekend. I got there late so I didn't have a great view. I set up across the street so there are some power lines in the shots.

First time shooting fireworks. I think they came out pretty good.

K20D, Vivitar 70-200mm, ISO 100, F11, SS around 3 Sec.

Thanks for looking, any CC welcome!!!

Also try some night shots of the casinos. Since your staying at Paris try and go up to the top of the eiffle tower. I was there earlier this year but didn't go as there was an hour wait to go up to the top.

We stayed at the Mirage.

Here are a couple of shots I took out there.

Just picked up a K20D from Metungnasi. Took it down to the Cincinnati Aquarium to test it out (it was raining on my off day). Worked pretty good! But shooting under those dark conditions with fish moving around isn't easy!

Here are a few that I thought came out pretty good.

All shot with K20D hand held. Most with Pentax M 50mm lens. ISO was around 2000, with shutter speeds around 1/80. Fstop was between 2 and 4. No flash.

All shot with Catch in Focus.

Jellyfish were a little easier than the fish.

Thanks for looking all CC welcome!!!

Anyone use an old m42 lens on canon 40D or 50D?

Thanks guys!

Yeah I was torn with what to do. I want a new camera body. So I was looking between a Pentax k20D or a Canon 40D maybe 50D. I want to switch over to canon and get some L series lenses for the better auto focus performance. But the L series glass as I'm sure you all know if expensive!!! But I figure I can get a used 400mm f5.6 and a 70 - 200mm f4 around $1,000 each. But that's going to take some more savings.

One of the big reasons to make the switch in my mind is the fact that Pentax isn't making a lens longer than 300mm. I just don't get why they wouldn't keep making longer lenses?

I also didn't want to buy a Canon body and have to wait a year or so before I could use it because I couldn't afford the lens I want.

After posting here I went over to the Canon forum and found a link that had about 70 pages of photos taken with m42 lenses. So it looks like I'm going to pick up a Canon body and start my switch. I will still keep my Pentax as I love all my lenses and the in body image stabilization!

Thanks again for all your help.

I currently have a Pentax K100D with some old m42 lenses. A Vivitar 135mm, Vivitar Series 1 200mm and an old Canon FD 400mm that was converted to m42.

Thinking of making the switch to Canon for the faster auto focus. But don't have the money to buy the body and auto focus lens right now. Wanted to know if the old m42 lenses will work on the canon bodies? Wondering if anyone has used an old m42 lens on a canon 40D or 50D and what your results were?

Not trying to start a Canon vs Pentax war, just wanted to know if the old m42 lenses will work with the Canon bodies.

Thanks

Stupid question, where can I get a copy of remote assistance v1? Did this come with in the software that came with the camera? I know I have it somewhere but can't find it. Or is this something that is purchased from Pentax? My original computer that I downloaded all the software has died long ago so I have lost all the software that came with my camera (k100d).

Thanks for any help

Can a tight focus ring be fixed?

Thanks for the help guys.

I've been real busy at work so I haven't had much chance to look at it. I will try and take some pictures and post some pics in the next day or two.

I have never really tried to take a lens apart. So I don't know if this is something I can do on my own.

I can take the back end of the lens off pretty easy. When I got the lens there were a few screws loose on both the focus ring and the aperture ring. They both had a little wiggle to them. So I took the focus ring off and saw that I could take the back tube off without messing with anything mechanical. Side benefit was being able to reach the rear glass element for cleaning.

I should take it in to a local shop and have them look at it. The screw around the focus ring have backed out a little from time to time so I have to check and make sure they are tight. Some of them also have been chipped away from someone not using the proper size screw driver. So I need to have some screws replaced.

Where if anywhere can you order those screws? How can you tell what size they are? Or is there a standard size?

Thanks again for all your help.

I recently purchased a vivitar 400mm lens off ebay. In the description it listed that the focus ring was tight and slow to focus. I'm ok with that in some situations, as I love the image quality. But in others I would like it to be faster.

Is there a way to "loosen" it up to make the focus ring turn smoother?

Can you use liquid graphite to help it turn better? Has anyone tried this?

I'm afraid to try this as I don't want to get oil or liquid graphite all over the glass.

Thanks for any help.

I was in the same boat as you with my k100d at first. I had a hard time getting my exposures correct. Here are a couple of things that helped me.

If you use the lcd to check the photos while shooting the lcd can fool you. If you have it set too bright you can have what looks like a good exposure until you load it on your computer. Make sure you are checking both the lcd and the histogram.

Also if you use the preview mode that has the highlights blink if they are blown out that helps as well.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I will let them know what you said about your brothers camera.

I was thinking it shouldn't matter what order I turned them on, but wanted to make sure.

We are talking back and forth by email but not much getting done.

Thanks again

I ordered one a few weeks ago and recieved it the other day. I can't get it to work. Did anyone else have this problem. I have sen an email back to the seller and he wants me to take some photos of it and send them to him.

I charged it up till the red light turned green and got nothing. Checked the manual and made sure there was not gaps between grip and camera. Also put it back on the charger over night still nothing.

I just don't know if I'm doing something wrong when I mount it on the camera. Maybe I'm not moving the on/off switch over enough.

How hard did you guys turn the mounting screw?

How hard/far over did the on/off button go?

Do you guys turn the grip on first or the camera when it's mounted?

Thanks for any help

Thanks

I wasn't sure if I could bring the 400mm in or not. So for the girls I just used the 70-200mm. But saw some others with big 300mm or 400mm so I brought the 400mm to the guys. No problem at all. They just checked my bag just to make sure I didn't have any food or drinks. Also brought the monopod.

Histogram discrepancies

Not really. What you see on your camera lcd is a JPG image not the RAW image. You never see the RAW histogram on camera. You only see the RAW histogram once you load it onto your computer.

The camera settings that I'm talking about are not shutter speed, f stop and iso. Only the settings in the menu option. Which I do believe are brightness, contrast and sharpness. Those settings should not have anything to do with your shutter speed, f stop or iso setting. Those options are only applied after you take the photo by the in camera processor.

It's easy to test. Just change the brightness, contrast and sharpness in the menu option and take a few photos. Take 4 or 5 photos both with the camera settings all the way to the right and all the way to the left. While in RAW format. But keep the other camera settings the same (shutter speed, f stop and iso). Download the images on your computer. See what each look like on the lcd and computer. Compair the histograms from your computer and also the histogram on your camera.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about that? I'm no expert but this is what was happening to me. I am only shooting in RAW format and this should only work with RAW format not if you shoot in JPG format.

I would go out shoot some shots that looked good on both the histogram and the image displayed on my camera lcd.

I would load those images up on my computer and they would all be a lot darker with not much detail.

Did some research that said the histogram you see on your camera is a/the JPG image. Taking in all the camera settings (contrast, brightness, sharpness...). But the RAW image is just that a RAW image that is not effected by the camera settings. Only the JPG images are affected by those. It's like trying to use the in camera filters in RAW format. The camera will not let you.

I checked it out with my images. Those images before I changed my camera had a histogram on the camera that was not the same as what I had on my computer. Once I changed my camera settings and moved all of them to the far left, not just zeroed them out. My histograms on the camera match the histograms I am getting on my computer almost exactly.

This is on a K100D. The newer cameras might be different. Try it out on your camera and see what you get. But once I changed my camera settings I have not had a problem with exposure when I download them onto my computer. Before that every shot I took was different.

New member here. Been looking around for a long while but just joined.

I'm going to be out there on Monday morning. If you want to try and meet up.

I'm going to try and get there around 9 or 9:30. Getting there a little earlier, I went Tuesday for the Women's draw. I got there around 10 and just missed Serena practicing. But I got some shots of Safina, Jankovic and others.

Here is a link to a video that helped me a lot with understanding histograms. There is a series of 3 videos I think. You may want to watch them all.

YouTube - Photography Tutorial - Perfect Exposures, The Histogram Pt 1

Also from what I've read the histogram you see on your camera is only from a jpg file. Even if you are shooting in RAW format.

This has been driving me nuts for the longest time. I would take a photo and the histogram and image on my camera looked good. But when I loaded it onto my computer they would always be darker than I wanted. Did some research and found out about the jpg histogram. Changed my camera settings as far left as they would go and haven't had a problem yet.

Hope this helps
