16 minute maximum video recoding time?

Hi all.

I've been considering using my K-01 for a school project where we have to shoot some video, instead of my old school DV recorder. :) However when doing some test shots, I've noticed that the camera only lets me shoot 16:23 at a time, even though I have space on my memory card for over 30 minutes of video.

Is this a limitation of the camera? What am I missing? I took a cursory look at the manual but couldn't find any reference to an upper limit on continuous video shooting.

Thanks,

AF performance with 35/2?

Hey folks.

I recently purchased the K-01, and I truly believe it has reignited my passion for Pentax equipment. I recently took the wee-beastie on a trip to India (pics coming soon), with an SMC-A 20/2.8 and an SMC-FA 35/2.0.

I've had some concerns with the 35/2.0. This is my first Pentax AF camera (moving from a Super-Program and an LX), and I may have been spoiled with my previous gear (Canon EOS), so I'm not sure what to expect for AF performance. The AF seems to hunt a lot as it tries to find the correct lines to focus on. This is pretty consistent in low and normal light situations, with a variety of scenes (scenes with a lot of lines to focus on, scenes without many lines, etc.).

I do understand that the SMC-FA 35/2.0 is an older lens. Do newer lenses (e.g., the ones with built in motors) improve the AF performance at all? Or is Pentax's AF just not that good?

Other than the AF performance, the camera performed like a champ. Metering was much better than I expected, and when I managed to program the Green and Red buttons, things really started to fly. My primary concern (lack of a viewfinder) wasn't really a worry -- except for some very rare situations (e.g., on the roof of a 30-story building in direct sunlight), the screen was always adequate. Battery life was great (with minimal use of the playback), AE lock is wonderful, and I was able to get some great shots with the SMC-A 20/2.8.

Cheers,

Hi there. A few questions:
  • Are those scratches or just rub marks? I can't really tell from the picture.

  • How is the balance compared to the 300/4 ? Is there a tripod collar? Does it need one?

Thanks.

Canon and Nikon vs the rest

+1 here! I see a lot of Pentax stuff when I walk around downtown Toronto.

For other places, I was very surprised when I went to Las Vegas last year to see someone not only shooting with a Pentax, but a film Pentax. It looked to be a black MX or Super Program (Program-A).

My next trip is in a few days; I'll be lugging around a pair of LXs and 30 rolls of film. :D

Where to buy gear in Hong Kong?

(moderators please move this if I put it in the wrong category)

I'll be heading to Macau and Hong Kong for two weeks this weekend. Does anyone know of any good places to buy some photo gear? Specifically Pentax (Looking for some limited lenses, or some older LX accessories) and Canon (wouldn't mind getting some long glass for my EOS setup).

Thanks!

Good reason to use film rather than dslr?

There isn't one set of compelling reasons to use a film camera over a digital camera. I'll reiterate what I tell all of my friends: you pick the best tool for the job. If I am in the city where I can drive around, and I need fast turnaround, and I have ready access to electricity, digital is where it's at. If I want something small, light, and mechanically reliable, I use film.

Personally I have three main (small format) camera outfits: Canon film SLR for action/sports where I need fast-fast-fast AF and can afford to wait to process film, Canon dSLR for convenience (dSLR AF is much slower than the AF in my EOS-3), and my Pentax gear for travel/general walkaround gear. A day's worth of Pentax gear (LX body, 3 prime lenses) weighs LESS than my Canon EOS-3 with a single zoom lens. Weight is a big factor!!

SMC-K 300/4 vs Super Takumar 300/4 -- Tripod Mounts, image quality?

G'day group.

I recently purchased an SMC-K 300/4 lens (Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 300mm F4), very nice looking lens and handles very well. Biggest drawback is the lack of a tripod collar which makes me nervous as I am about to start using this lens for some more serious sport shooting on a Pentax LX.

I've found a deal on a Super Takumar 300/4 (Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 300mm F4), which comes with the tripod collar.

A couple of questions:
  • Any opinion on image quality differences between the two lenses? I'll likely be shooting wide-open on film, either 400 ISO or 800 ISO.

  • Can I use the tripod collar from the Super Takumar on the SMC-K at all?

Thanks for any input!

Pentax SuperProgram / Other film body parts interchangeable?

One of my beloved Super Program bodies has become damaged. Specifically, the little "arm" that connects to the aperture lever on the lens has become horribly bent. I'm not even sure how, but I managed to get a lens stuck on there and I was super worried that the lens would be damaged in trying to take it off.

Anyways. I'll post pics when I get a chance, but it seems to be a very "generic" part. Looking at the lens mount of the camera it looks like there are only two screws that hold this lever in place.

Someone locally has an MX for sale which is also broken. Does anyone know if I can transplant the aperture lever from the MX body to the Super Program body? Never having seen an MX I'm not sure myself.

Thanks for any info!

Poll: If you were to switch systems. What would it be?

Why should anybody limit themselves to one system? I have a full Pentax (film) system and a full Canon (film and digital) system, and I pick the one that suits my needs. Pentax when I need a lightweight setup, and it's my preferred travel camera. LX is built like a tank and I have a good set of primes. Canon when I'm shooting sports (sorry, Canon AF is faster than anything I've seen so far), and when I can lug around heavier gear (My EOS-3 or 10D both outweigh my LX by several hundred grams).

If I were to switch to a whole new system, I've always been intrigued by Contax, but I might even go to an AF 645 format.

AF220T vs AF280T on Pentax LX.

..just thought I would share.

I've been using a AF220T on my LX for a while now, and finally found an AF280T locally. According to the LX manual, the flash indicator should blink on proper exposure with a flash. This function is not available on the AF220T, but it works fine on the AF280T.

What am I doing wrong with my Metz?

A couple of questions..
  1. Which exact Metz unit are you using? "Metz 48" could be anything; i.e., I know there are a number of variations on the 40 series as well.

  2. Does the Metz unit use a SCA adapter? Or is it a Pentax specific unit? If it takes a SCA adapter, is it the correct model? The correct revision? (I.e., on my Canon setup I had to upgrade to an "M3" revision for my 10D; the "M2" I had been using for over a year on my EOS-3 didn't work on digital bodies, even though they both had ETTL).

  3. With a light meter can you compare the output from the flash and a known working flash?

I was using a 40 MZ-2 unit with my Pentax gear and had severe underexposing problems. When I had a chance to compare the Metz output to a Pentax flash, the Metz was underexposing. The SCA adapter had fried itself and was no longer exposing properly. :(

Keeping a camera kit in the trunk of my car -- suggestions on storage?

I'm not worried about theft; common sense prevents that. Don't show off your gear, keep a careful eye out, etc. Plus if you don't have anything worthwhile in plain site, usually thieves will move on to something easier/better. And an alarm doesn't hurt either.

That said. I'm using a film SLR, and the gear is gear that I can afford to lose.

So far a Pelican case suggestion matches mine. But anyone know where I can get some silcal gel? Online maybe?

Keeping a camera kit in the trunk of my car -- suggestions on storage?

Once too many times (most recently as last week) I've been driving around and seen a great shot, and been unable to capture it because I have no camera. While circling back is an option sometimes (I have several spots bookmarked on my GPS :D) sometimes the event only lasts one night (i.e., some gorgeous fog recently in Toronto).

Looking at my gear I now have enough to keep a basic camera setup in my car, permanently: 24/2.8, 50/1.7 and a 135/3.5. Or in doubt, I can switch it up with two spare zooms I have (28-105 and 70-200). The point is: I have enough for a second kit to capture the image.

One thing that concerns me is storage, especially now that winter is coming. I'm concerned about the bouncing humidity in the trunk of my car as the temperature fluctuates, and exhaust heating up the back (I drive quite long distances); I've had tools corrode from a winter's moister accumulating in my toolbag, and read horror stories of some cars where the moisture actually rusts through part of the trunk. My major concern is fungus though, which thrives in a moist environment. If I were to keep a kit in my trunk, does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know where I can buy silica gel or similar anti-moisture products? Should I invest in a Pelican case to store everything, or will a regular bag do, such as a LowePro?

Thanks for any help!

LX Focus Woes.

Recently had my LX CLA'd by the local Pentax repair shop (as listed on the Pentax Canada website), because there was black residue on the mirror. I also asked them to ensure that the focus was aligned (it would no longer focus to infinity).

I took the camera with me on a trip and have been going over the scanned negatives, and they still look a tad blurry. :(

If I mount a lens, I notice that if I set the lens to infinity, the split-prism still shows straight lines not aligning -- i.e., still slightly out of focus. If I put the same lens on my spare SuperProgram bodies, and focus at infinity, the split-prism shows what I think it should: straight lines align properly.

I know that "some" lenses have their infinity mark slightly beyond what is stamped on the barrel, but confirming with my SuperProgram this doesn't seem to be the case.

Can anyone offer some suggestions? Sending to Eric for a second CLA? Unfortunately it's been over two months and there was only a 30 day warranty on the original CLA. Sigh.

Thanks for any advice.

Question Er, where are my sent items?

Where is this default changed? I don't recall ever changing it. Even then, when I go to my sent items only one message (and it's always the same message) is ever shown unless I click the filter button, and then the rest fo the month show up. Even ones that I've sent today are not shown.

I checked, and the auto-save to Sent Items was not checked. I've since now turned that on. But that begs the question: what drives the "saved" messages if that option is not checked? I've never tried to manually save a sent message, yet there are a lot of messages in there (again, which only show up when I "refilter" the list).

I noticed that a new policy has been implemented where you have to agree to terms and conditions for the forum before posting anything new -- this is new since the re-organization I believe.

With the standard site, it shows the conditions and you have to click the checkbox, then click the "Proceed" button. But button originally shows 30 seconds and counts down to 0 before you can click it.

However, with the mobile version of the site the button never counts down to 0, so you can't click "Proceed". I've only tested this on a Blackberry Bold so far.

So is this an error, or do I have something not set properly on my BB? (I've enabled Java & JavaScript, and other functions seem to work properly on other sites).

Thanks,
-10d

A few questions on the "Sent Items" folder from my personal mailbox.
  1. When I first go to "Sent Items" it only shows a single item from last week. I have to go the extra step and click the "Filter" button to see any other posts. Is this normal?

  2. I've sent some PMs today and yesterday to other forum members, but they aren't showing in my "Sent Items" at all. Is there a problem, or do they not show up until the user has actually received them?

Thanks for any help!
