Todd, did you ever get a good copy?

I have read that one of the lens had a infinity focus issue for the K mount, does anyone know if this has been corrected with recent copies?

DA 16-85 Lens Wobble / Creep

I have a Pentax 16-85 that I have owned since it was first released in the US. It has become my go to lens, living on my camera a majority of the time. I have beat it up on several hiking trips and canoe trips. Recently I’ve noticed that the zoom is very loose, the lens will extend fast if held front down, and it now has a slight wobble when fully extended. Considering this was a very stiff lens when I first bought it with no wobble, I am guessing that it is just that some of the tight seals are worn. I know that Tamron will replace these wear components if sent in for service. Does anyone know if pentax does this?

DIY lens mount sealing

I was also looking to add a seal to the back of my Tamron 70-200mm k mount. This lens lives on my camera some times, and there is always a layer of grime on the mount and contacts when I remove it. I am hoping to cut this down as dirty contacts have messed up my apature setting several times by making them jump to a new setting after each picture. While I do wipe them off routinely now, sometimes it is not the best environment to take the lebs off in the field to correct this.

New Ultra Wide Rectilinear Lens Decision - Irix 11mm F/4 v Venus 12mm f/2.8

Adam, now that these lenses are available for purchase, will you be doing your reviews and comparison soon? I'm leaning towards the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm since it is faster and smaller, but it is always reassuring to see your reviews when spending around a grand for a lens. Interestingly, I can not find any comparison review between these two lenses yet for any mount.

Broo, You are correct about the absents of a lens filter thread, this is unfortunate, but probably necessary due to the extremely short focal length.

Additionally, some pricing has been found on this website

The K-mount Black Stone Version is 23690 czk, or $932.99 USD
The K-mount Firefly Version is 17290 czk or $680.93 USD

New Ultra Wide Rectilinear Lens Decision - Irix 11mm F/4 v Venus 12mm f/2.8

I am currently starting to look for ultra wide angle lens to add to my lens line up, and just wanted to get some input. With two brand new lens (Irix 11mm and Venus 12mm) coming soon, this seams like a good time.

Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Pentax K:
- Rectilinear Distortion Free
- F2.8 apature (ring controlled)
- No weather sealing
- $950 USD (according to B&H
- Manual Focus
- Not sure if chipped
- Not sure if it accepts screw in filters

Irix 11mm f/4 for Pentax K
- Rectilinear Very Low Distortion
- F4 apature (camera controlled)
- Chipped for lens identification (such as focal length)
- Both versions Weather Sealed except front element (This is becomming more important to me)
- Rumored to cost around 1K USD
- Manual Focus w/ locking ring
- 95mm screw in filters (I always use a uv filter to protect the front element)

Currently I plan on using an ultra wide lens such as this for landscapes and architecture on a K3ii. Assuming they perform similar optically (this will be the final deciding factor), I like the fast aperture and smaller size of the venus, but the weather sealing, locking focus, id chip and ability to accept screw in filters of the lrix weights just as heavy in my mind. I know there are many other offerings such as the samyong/rokinon, but I believe most of those are fish eye or high distortion.

While I know almost no one has had a chance to play with these (they are due start shipping soon), I just wanted to see what everyone opinions are.

it was the Pentax HD 16-85mm. It turned out to be dirty lens contacts. Not sure how they got dirty enough to effect this, but cleaning them worked.

K3ii - erratic aperture jump in manual mode

So today, I have been experiencing a strange issue with my K3ii. When shooting in manual mode, randomly after I take a picture my aperture jumps to 13. It does not matter what it was set to before. I have experienced this starting only today, from when the camera is turned on, returning from picture review, or after the picture preview from taking a picture. This is very annoying and has messed up a few photos I was taking for an event today.

I switched batteries after the even and found this still occurred. I plan on resetting the camera and see if this may fix the issue. I am hopping it does not need to go in for repair since I need it for the next few weeks. But it is not useful when you have to remember to check the aperture after every photo to see if it stayed where you set it to. It is very strange asI have been using the camera since it was released and have not had any issues like this until today.

Using a HD 16-85mm
OEM battery
disabled flu card and normal card
shooting indoors

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Painter, You are correct, it is the card reader in my laptop. Adam, I am able to use the web view with no issues so far. I was able to download just fine from windows 7, only once I upgraded to windows 10 did the issue start. I will give the camera usb a try.

I did test the focus on all of my lenses using a DIY target (I ordered one that is taking a bit to come in the mail) and found that almost all my lenses required a AF adjustment. Surprisingly all my pentax lenses were all over, while my third party lenses were closer to 0 offset. I have yet to test the results for action shots, however for close portraits this made a big difference.

pic-nic, I have noticed a difference in focus speed/accuracy when there is a high contrast background, but as I have been reminded many times for Pentax users and users of other brands, Pentax autofocus tracking is very far behind the competativators.

Here are two samples from my SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited after the AF fine adjustment.

Thank you Digitalis for the reply regarding the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens K-Mount. Great job capturing the lightening strikes.

The main feature that attracted me to the lens was how sharp it is supposed to be, the continuous wide aperture throughout the entire focal range, and the zoom range, which represents 50% of where I shoot. However, without reasonably reliable focus, I can not even consider this lens. After using a K20 since it came out, I decided to upgrade to the K3ii when it came out mainly for the "enhanced focus tracking" and greater shake reduction. While the k3ii's focus far exceeds the k20's, it has still caused some frustration in missing some action shots. For action shots, I tend pair the k3ii with a Tamron 70-200mm.

While I do have the 16-85mm, and think it is an amazing lens, it is not always the best for indoor low light applications. This is what let me to get the smc 31mm, another great lens I have had much luck with. However, for certain walkabout situations, I do appreciate the the flexibility of a small zoom range. Perhaps in the future Sigma will release a second version to correct this, or maybe Pentax can lease the design add their improvements to it.

Below are some of my results using the SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited:

Hey Everyone,

I realize that this post may not be in the best thread, but I have recently been looking at the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art lens as a low light zoom lens. After hearing it was finally available in K-mount and compared favorably against one of my favorite lenses, the 31mm SMC, I became real interested. The only reason I am hesitating on this lens is due to the focusing issues mentioned on the Pentax in depth lens review, and some other places. Since I would like the ability to shoot some moving subjects, this will be an issue. However, after looking at the user reviews, most people do not seem to notice this issue; they also seem to be shooting stationary subjects though.

So my question is, does anyone on this thread own and use this lens enough to give some advice on the limitations of this lens?

Everyone, thank you for the advice.

- For the focus testing chart, I have not ran this yet, but I will try and at different focal lengths for each lens.
- While I typically try to use a smaller aperture, when I am limited by light, I tend choose shutter speed over sharpness otherwise the dogs are a blur. I realize this isn't best, but it seems to have slightly better results then using a higher ISO; at least when I get the focus. I'll have to keep playing with this.

I am posting this in the K3- DSLR specific forum as I would like to get input from K3ii users.

I have recently purchased a K3ii and some new lenses to upgrade from the K20D I have been using with several manual lenses from my K1000 35mm. One area I wanted to venture into more was sports photography, with both people and animals.

One subject I have been focusing on for practice is dogs. The area I am getting hung up on is trying to consistently get clear focused pictures. In general I tend to find my camera back focusing for moving subjects, both laterally and head on. I should mention that the focus is consistently perfect for stationary and closer subjects. I was hoping for some pentax specific advice from pentax users. Since I mostly shoot with canon 7D users who's cameras "just focus", other than some basic techniques, I have not gotten anything terribly helpful.

The two lenses I primarily use are a Pentax HD DA 16-85mm and a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI LD (IF) Macro
For my camera settings, currently I am using:
  • The AF button on the back of the camera, not the half press focus

  • AF.C - Continuous focus

  • The center 9 points for focus tracking, making the center point my starting focus

  • Action in AF.C focus is set to Focus priority, not shutter priority

  • High priority (4) - for Hold AF status

I have attached three photos: on the first, my focus point was on the lead dog (not the best lighting or contrast), on the second I had my focus point on the dog with the black collar, the third shows the focus for general stationary photos.

Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION

There is no reason why any future K mount need too be continued to be crippled. I decided on Pentax because of the collection of old Pentax glass I have acquired only to find that my work flow severely limited by needing to precapture images to check my settings. The step down metering is very time consuming and not accurate by any means compared to active metering. There should be no reason why a new top of the line SLR cant preform as my 30 year old K1000 can.

-Bring back the k20 body design, the size and button arrangement still seems more comfortable for those who want something bigger to hold on to.

-IR focus assist, help to focus more quickly in low, or very low light.

-Boost the ISO Range, from 80 up with smaller intervals

- Use a sensor like the "quantum photo sensor," that promises to absorb more light, which would help with the lower noise and boost the ISO range

Liveview audible noise

My k20 makes the loud noise in live view with the shake reduction on, but it also makes a secondary quieter noise. This noise is only produced when the camera is moves up/down/left/right regardless of what shake reduction is on. It stops when movement is ceased. Does anyone else hear this noise with their camera. I just got mine, so I want to find out if this is normal before the 90 days is up.
