Probably, the HD Pentax-DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR is not the most convenient lens for astrophotography, but I do not pretend to compete with astrophotography prefessionals, just to take nice pictures of the Milky way and the most brilliant constellations using that lens and the K-70. Sometimes, I use Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM but, occasionally, I prefer the longer focal distances available with the 16-85.
The main problem I found is the absence of any dial or marks in the 16-85 focusing ring, when manual focus is a must and the only brilliant objects to focus are just the tiny stars.
I would thank your comments to tackle this subject in a convenient way, in remote locations with no objects available to focus manually.

Thank you, friends. You're formidable !
Let me express my gratitude with one of the first and the last one of the shots done this morning.
I preferred K-5 for the testing, while preparing K-70 for new shots with a more studied orientation and FOV. ---------- Post added 10-15-2017 at 11:17 AM ---------- |

Probably there are many answers, at least as many as combinations of Time exposure and Lens apertures but, are there any safety recommendations to prevent sensor damages when shooting sundawns, sunrises and sunsets ?
Anticipated thanks to past experiences comments

Hola, José
Welcome to the forum. I hope you will enjoy your K-70 toy.
I also have a K-70, bought six weeks ago. Still learning "how to" and differences, after five years with K-5.
Best regards from Málaga and... good shots with K's

OK, Adam, OK clackers, I will follow your recommendations with Sigma Europe.
Maybe your experience is stronger than my expectations.
Sincerely, thanks

I doubt that Sigma Europe would care about such a particular case concerning an old product out of current catalog...
Perhaps Ricoh has the problem not only with Sigma's 150-500, but also with other "competitor's" lenses, and not only with the new K-70, but also with the new KP...
For me, it is clear that K-5 still works perfectly with the 150-500. But it is also true that the "old glory" K-5 had quite a few firmware updates and the promising K-70 just two: the very short running v 1.10, and the the very recent one v 1.11...
Does Ricoh know about this incompatibility ? Is it a pending subject or just a missing detail among others more relevant ?
in any case, I'm afraid it will take a little long to be solved. Fortunately, I still love my K-5.

Thank you, Adam
I will follow your suggestion: I will contact Ricoh, requesting them to include Sigma's 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG HSM in a next K-70 firmware update.

Tonight I was trying to shot the Moon with the Sigma 150-500 and K-70.
However, after reviewing everything I could imagine, it was impossible to do anything: K-70 was completely blocked. Even the LCD display remained ON after switching Off the K-70.
To check K-70, I mounted Pentax 55-300 PLM and there was no problem at all.
To check whether Sigma's 150-500 had any trouble, I mounted it on the K-5 and it worked fine in different setting conditions.
Few days ago, I was using Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM on K-70 without any problem, so it seems that HSM is/was not a problem
Does anybody know about any incompatiblity between K-70 and Sigma's 150-500 ?
Anticipated thanks

I just installed GIMP 2.8.22. Everything was OK and the new version substitued previous 2.8.18. UFRAW remains, suposedly, as installed for GIMP 2.8.18
K-5 16 Mpxls PEF files are seen with GIMP 2.8.22 as they were before with 2.8.18.
However, trying to open 24 Mpxls PEF files from K-70, an error message appears informing of corrupted files.
Does anybody faced these error messages and solved them ?
Anticipated thanks

Some samples shot yesterday with HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE mounted on a K-70, with firmware v. 1.00.
Dragonflies are Trithemis kirbyi, adult male the red one and female the multicolored one. Both have a length dimension of about 32 mm.
Photos with full dragonflies were shot at the minimum focusing distance. To give an idea of the 55-300PLM magnification capability, they are uploaded without any crop, just redimensioned to reduce weight.
Photo showing eyes is a cropped sample of the corresponding full one.
K-70 and 55.300 PLM seem to make a really good couple. Terrific focusing speed and silent operation
Just today I updated K-70 firmware v.1.11, apparently without any problem

Thanks, Steve
Well, after reading your reply I have new doubts and the new questions could be:
"Which tool/version should I use to read the MakerNotes ?"
"Is it necessary to configure some setting of K-70 to read those MakerNotes ?"
Since it seems that MakerNotes are an option that maker could include or not, another question could be "Are MakerNotes included in K-70 RAWs ?"
Thanks

When viewing the EXIF files of K-5 with some Metadata Editor, under the header of “Manufacturer Notes” or "MakerNotes", it is possible to know some interesting data relative to any picture, such as “Shutter count”, “Camera temperature”, “Manufacture date” and many more.
I tried to find similar info in EXIF files of K-70 but I could not find them, neither in JPEG nor in PEF format .
Does anybody know whether those “Manufacturer Notes/MakerNotes” are available in K-70 files and whether it is necessary to configure some particular details of K-70 to see them?
Anticipated thanks

Suggestion: To transfer directly you could use Google's "We transfer". No problem of size for 3-5 shots.
Sorry, I'd not process them...😞

Hovering… I’ve never used catch-in-focus. It seems to me rather complicated or subject to chance, considering the almost unpredictable flying trajectories of the dragonflies.
With still dragonflies, I always use K-5 + 70-300 APO, macro at 200-300 mm., SR On and monopod, with acceptable average results. With flying drafonflies I use to shot in MF and TAv mode, ISO upper limit set to 2400-3200, depending on light conditions, apertures between F/11-F/16 and speed above 1/400, unless flashing with K-5 flash. I prefer flash-off, if possible. Flying dragonflies are, normally, patrolling Aeshnidae or ovipositing Libellulidae. Percentage of “acceptable” shots, around 10%, without any Photoshop make-up.
I suppose that, with 55-300 PLM focusing speed, AF should go better than MF, making unnecessary catch-in-focus. That is something that you could try with your K-3. Maybe, your feedback info could help my decision between Sigma 18-300 and Pentax 55-300.
Very nice shot of that beautiful lady: I think it is an individual not present in my area

Good animal, those Sigma's 180 compatible with Pentax...
Today's Sigmas 180, 150, 105 HSM's are no longer friendly with us... what a pity !
And Ricoh's maximum macro offer is just 100 without SDM... what a pity, again !
Perhaps you're right and the maximum we can aspire is just manual focus... and good luck

Absoluteliy Not, Aslyfox...
They were just flying naturally, no string or stand was used: the legs positions indicate clearly the flight status...
