Honestly the guy canning the 21 has put up the biggest load of bunkum I've read in quite awhile. The reason his opinion stands out so much is because it's the polar opposite of anything i've read re this lens ever. Go to Fred Miranda Forums and have a look at the long running Zeiss photo thread featuring many stunning photos by the 21 an all other Zeiss lenses. Plenty of evidence there of the quality of the 21.
This guy is sticking up his opinion as truth and criticising others for doing the same when there is plenty of pro evidence and very little negative evidence, an I love the line about not having a valid opinion because you own the lens and are emotionally invested in the purchase.
The minimum focus distance is 8" or 22cm, so it can be set at infinity, the camera av, auto iso, adjust aperture (shoot it wide open) as suits an it can be used like a point and shoot, doesn't get any easier.
Maybe rent another brand of camera with this lens one day and find out how good it is.
Fwiw I do own it, an I bought it on the strength of opinion I read about it and the quality of the photos I saw. It probably is better on ff but I use it on a K5 an it is still outstanding.

Agree, a six page thread and no one knows what was wrong with the lens.

I'm confused. OP has problem on the 18th, communicates with Zeiss, sends lens away, gets the lens back on the 20/21st(?)(amazing service) an all's well and that's it? No picture of the lens in question and no explanation of what the problem was.

There's ZK 35 F2 listed on ebay right now for $798, so let's not write this one off just yet. Actually there's a whole stack of ZK's.

Can you show a picture of the lens attached to the camera from front / top? So we can see the lens markings, infinity etc.

pentaxnood, first thing I'd do is to get someone to double check your set up and contact the store and tell them what is happening before you send it anywhere. Not to say there's not a fault with the lens. I would be interested to hear what the issue is. If you don't mind could you run through your camera settings very specifically again?

I often read "I like "x" lens but it's manual". Infinity on the ZK 35 is three metres. Anything past that should be in focus or need little adjustment. If you're out shooting past three metres you can set it up and just about use it like a point and shoot. The 25/28 infinity point will be even shorter. I have the ZK21, infinity is two metres. If you're shooting landscapes it's a piece of cake. The ZK35 is not just a great lens it is a joy to use.

PopFlash still have some zk mount lens in stock including 50/2 makro and the 85/1.4. Only risk in buying Zeiss is you will want more.LBA on industrial scale. Not joking. The 50/2 was somewhere around US950.

I have read(in other words I don't know myself)the difference in the mtf scores might be more to do with ff sensor/pixel size than the lenses themselves. There is an interesting Wiki post on ff vs crop re resolution etc. Some people say Photozone is overrated.Who knows but their word does seem to be treated like gospel.

I have the Zeiss 5omm mp but not the Pentax 50mm(but do have the 31/43/77,i.e. have Pentax lenses as well).Love it and my other Zeiss lenses, for me the whole Zeiss/manual focus experience has taken my photography to a more enjoyable place. The quality of the lenses is outstanding(build and resolution).Beware though if you get one you might want more.Btw the Zeiss 100mm mp is truly stunning.

I don't mean to be mean but we all know the answer to axl's issue is a K5,how many times do I visit here and the problem is not about photography but money.

I've taken a liberty here,I've snatched a post from "denoir",this is from the "alt"section at Fred Miranda, ff vs crop re lens or body purchase,it's Canon but I think it translates.denoir says: I have both cameras Jim. My answer without hesitation is to go for the 5DII. The 7D is in many ways a better camera, but there is no substitute for FF. And using a 21 Distagon on a cropper is really not worth it - it's so much better on FF. There are on the other hand loads of less expensive manual focus lenses that produce fantastic results on FF.
As for your other questions, the 5DII is about a stop ahead of the 7D in noise i.e at ISO 3200 on the 5DII you'll get similar noise levels as ISO 1600 on the 7D. Regarding sharpness, the 7D puts a much higher strain on the lenses (due to higher pixel density). So unless you use really high end glass that completely outresolves the 7D sensor, the 5DII will produce sharper results.
I bought my 5DII as a backup camera to my 7D. I thought that it was a clever way of getting to use each of my lenses as separate (apparent) focal lengths. I was not particularly impressed with the 5DII at first as the 7D was more modern and had much better auto focus and a bunch of other features. So my intention was to use the 7D as the main camera. Soon however I noticed how much better my 5DII images were and I basically stopped using the 7D.
It wasn't about sharpness or high ISO - it was about the whole look, everything from vignetting and field curvature to subject isolation with shallow DOF. The images were simply more interesting and less flat. Hence my recommendation is to go FF now and save up for the ZE 21 and get it later.

Authenticity is everything.31 as 31,43 as 43,77 as 77.A headline ff with these lens(an my adored Zeiss)just scream niche fulfilled. The parsimonious Pentaxians will dispute this but I say look to the future and my particular tastes.:cool:Ricoh play with the big boys, why not an assault on the status quo?

Okay, nothing new here for the old hands but for us learners I've recently acquired an 18mm Zeiss and 18.5 times 1.53 is 28.305.Not that far off the" legendary" 31.Just never realised how wide the 31 is on ff(not owning one).Totally different perspective from on cropped "normal".

Yeah but that logic just about kills the entire thread,in the real world none of this(photograpically) matters.les3457 posted a nice comparison between the Pentax 31 and the Zeiss 28 in the lens section, perhaps you might like to read it.Failing that or also go to FM and check out the Alternative Gear forum, post your Zeiss theory there,it might be illuminating for you.:)

I can only agree, whether here or DPR value plays a large part to the extent that it seems to swamp conversations about the actual photography.Ricoh does excite me though, nothing wrong with hoping.

There is always a prevailing tone to conversations here about need(do you really, can you get by with/out),I don't care about need. The rest of my life is flat out filled up with meeting a variety of needs much like the rest of you.I could survive without photography and it very obviously will without me.Pro's who earn their living taking photos have needs I understand.Me,I do this for escape, enlightenment and fun.So I'm not going to offer any rational explanation for wanting a full frame camera,I just want to see what all the fuss is about, much like Twitch I want to use my limiteds and my Zeiss lenses on a body they were designed to be used on.For me, for fun.

I wasn't there on the day but...the original picture might have some exposure issues but the adjusted photo is not good for me either. The colour of the sea(for example) is unnatural.Btw my monitor isn't calibrated,it's a 24" imac, maybe not perfect but I've found it largely satisfactory.

First off I like it,perhaps a little sharper focus on your face/eyes.For me one of the challenges/conflicts/issues here(pentax forum) is between the straight up photographer, the photographer/image maker and the image maker. Some people appear to see things in a purely technical fashion, others extend from there. All good but breeds different approaches to any critique, then take into account the original photo quality versus what appears here.
