Advice and review of travel setup for next trip

I use telephoto lens a lot, even in cities. It's one of the reasons I love the s22 ultra and didnt upgrade to the s24 ultra (10x/240mm equivalent vs 5x).

---------- Post added 02-15-2024 at 02:31 PM ----------

I love my 50-135mm, but I wont use it witht a TC and ditch the 55-300mm, I'd rather bring the 55-300mm.
I appreciate the extra reach for landscape and in this case for some wildlife (I'll be visiting the komodos).
Good to know for the 20-40mm, less than half the weight of the 16-50mm and less bulky. I think you convinced me to get one.I could get one in silver to go with my silver K3 1

Advice and review of travel setup for next trip

I'm headed to South East Asia for a whirlwind trip with a photogenic friend and after will visit family where I'll take some family pictures.
I'd like to bring the least amount possible, the less weight I'm carrying the more likely I'll use my equipment in my experience.

Pentax K3 III + extra battery
Samsung s22 Ultra
Godox AD100 + tripod/lightstand + umbrella + fresnel lens + CTO gels (for sunrise/sunset) + remote the whole kit weighs a bit more than 3.5lbs I think.
ND filter and polarizer.
Cotton carrier vest ( I can really move with it !).

will bring
55-300mm WR (did think of upgrading to the PLM but not sure its worth spending the money when I have the WR version).
15mm

considering

I really like my FA50mm F1.4, light but no WR. But focal length makes it a 75mm.

I used to use the 31mm as my street lens but for travel I think I prefer the 43mm.

Honestly I dont use the 21mm pancake much but in this case with a 32mm equivalent it could prove better for use with the strobe and subject close especially when handholding it.

50-135mm is tempting, I've got a good copy and appreciate the WR ( I mean, I ll be at the beach, zoom good too) but heavy, 67mm filter and with the 55-300mm I was thinking of using a prime - either the 70mm F2.4 or 77mm (2nd choice).

16-50mm SDM, heavy and annoying filter size compared to the rest of my kit. It just fits well with the 50-135mm...

I do have the 18-135mm but almost never use it. Never been satisfied with it.

Not wide or fast enough for me, when I already have the 50-135 2.8.

The 16-50mm simply blocks when I try to change focal length. It is already screw drive converted.

Travel kit mostly wider end

Hi all,

Between getting a K3 III, my 16-50mm not working anymore and hopefully be able to travel this year, I've been seriously looking at revamping my travel kit.

Current travel kit:
16-50mm broken, need a replacement
50-135mm very happy with it
55-300mm HD version

primes depending on destination
15mm (tough rarely) / 31mm / 43mm or 50mm FA 1.4 / 70mm or 77mm
I usually take the 31mm and 50mm for walkabouts and low light situations.

Volume and weight are a factor. WR very much appreciated.

1. would it be worth it to change the 55-300mm HD to PLM version, the K3 combined with the PL making up for the slower aperture. This would be the least interesting and slowest priority " upgrade though the cheapest. Weight are about the same but the HD is slightly wider and almost an inch shorter.

2. To replace the 16-50mm with the latest 16-50mm PLM. It would be expensive and come with an increase in weight and size. Looking at pictures would the new lens take up less width due to the sun hood ? I was thinking combining the 11-18mm with the 20-40mm too. this is my main priority.

3. I've been looking at the 11-18mm 2.8, but its pretty expensive. I do have use for the wider end.

It feels like I need to decide if the 20-40mm will do the job or I just suck it up and get the 16-50mm PLM. Get the 11-18mm if budget permits or there s a sale. Keep the 55-300mm HD for now even if I can get a good deal on the PLM version.

I wish there was a 50mm 1.4 weather sealed and light.

Thanks for any help !

Mine works on and off, though I did purchase it at the same time as my k5 a few months after it came out and used it a lot. This with my k10 having the dreaded memory card error (even though that camera i have not dropped , k5 yes..) my confidence in pentax oem equipment has gone down a bit...

Keep Fa31 or swap to Fa43 + Da15

I have all 4. The 31mm is the one lens to rule them all. When mine got stolen it was my first purchase, delaying getting the K5.
I think that the 31mm and 43mm are different enough to be worthwhile owning both - but I'd get the 15mm first.
As much as I love the 77mm, It can be a little long at times. Same for the 70mm which I sold off.
I'm looking at a 15mm / 31mm / 55mm / 77mm for traveling if I had the funds and I haven't decided on a 16-50mm replacement.

Opinions wanted: DA 21mm as walaround main prime

The 31mm is a great lens (my favorite and by far most used lens) however very expensive - you could get a lot of other lens instead. I think it's a great lens for street photography although a tad bit too narrow fov - "take more time" to compose your shots...

The 21mm has great IQ and rendering, distortion can easily be fixed in post in batch. But it is a little too wide so unless you're cropping a lot be careful with your composition. On the other hand it is my go to discreet lens, small, light, unobtrusive and with the wider angle easy to "shoot from the hip".

Best walkaround would be somewhere between 24-28mm which makes it the old full frame (roughly) 35-43mm in my experience.

Extended warranty on the pentax 16-50mm

Well, I'm considering buying another DA16-50mm to replace the one that got stolen last year - even with possible SDM issues (though mine was perfect all around but may the person who stole it get SDM issues) and yet another FF rumor.

Especially since it's on sale for 750 at BH.

However I'd like to get some extra warranty but I don't know which is best for it ? square trade ? a more specialized outfit ?

For those who want to steer me away from the DA, I do use my K5 + 16-50mm + 50-135mm in a lot of different conditions so weather sealing is important to me. However I might get swayed by a 18-55mm WR now (less than $150) and maybe a tamron 17-50mm ($425) a little later or get from my dad the 16-45mm F4 or an old sigma 24-70 f2.8.

I am currently using primes for that focal range (15/21/31mm)

it was at target in the US. They used to sell some pentax stuff online. Someone must have returned it to the store at one time or another but lately they started take a huge percentage off the list price on online return items.

cheap bigma

I like the Bigma so far, that extra reach has been useful so far.
However the 100-300mm works so much better in low light conditions that I think it still has it's place in my kit (not to mention sharpness etc..)
My 50-300mm is great when I want something light or for traveling, I can just put it in my backpack "just in case" with little weight/volume penalty.

All three lens are useful to me.... decisions decisions...

Though what I really need is a 16-50mm to replace the one that got stolen ; the weatherproofing is useful to me and I like the IQ but that darn SDM issue is making me hesitate too much.

There seems to be two targets in my area that gets a lot of online returns.

The one with the bigma seems to get a lot of lens and cameras and until recently only discounted it down by a couple of cents. It is also located in a less affluent and busy part of the region.

The other target receives more misc electronics online returns but they usually take off 30% immediately. This target is located in a much more rich and busy place.

There is one more target that had some lens pop up as well.

Now that I think about it these are the 3 closest targets to me, which have lots of returns and lots of lens...

I had the sigma 18-200mm. Not worth to me though my father loves it since he now only needs to carry one lens.
I hated the IQ. I would pay the extra money.

Those extra 50mm seems very useful to me.

Its the non HSM version.
Funny thing happened today, I went to the same target, and they had another one.... for $350 ! Apparently someone returned it this morning.
On and off I've seen a bigma for the past 2 years at this target, as an online return but stayed at the 1000 price. Can't help but think that someone might have been "renting" one of the models and maybe returned it to get a better price (they increased the percentage off for online returns).

For the first one at least it was brand new, the $350 model looks brand new but the box is a little bit worse for wear and it's obvious from the packaging that someone took a look at it.

They also had a sigma nikon 12-24mm HSM for $290.

So, I found a pentax sigma 50-500mm APO DG at a target store. It was an online return (only available online) but they kept it in store and kept selling it at their original price which was $1000.

I noticed the item for the past year then a few days ago they cut all the online return items to half their original price.

So I bought a bigma for $525 including tax. Still, I don't know if I should keep or return it.
Already have 82mm filters but on the other hand I have a 55-300mm and 100-300mm f4.

WIll test it out tomorrow.

thoughts ?

I have both DA* and all the FA ltds; in the end I use the 31mm for just about everything - I use it more than any other lens.

Seems like budget isn't much of an issue so I would go with the FA31 / 100mm for a macro lens.

Of course, look at what focal length you a lot at or maybe think you want to expand to before anything else.

Hi,

I m in the process of learning more about "studio" photography and using flashes, and so I'd like to know what I should get. I already have some stands and reflectors from my dad and uncle to which I can add my photography group's equipment.

However I d like to get my own wireless triggers,

I'm looking at the cactus v5, 3 of them to start off with (PW looks mighty expensive)

I have a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter somewhere, though I m not sure if I still have a PC flash sync cord and should buy a backup if I do anyway (best place to get it ?).

a light meter, maybe a used seikonic ?

I have the K5, k10 and Kx available to me.
For flashes, the pentax 360, metz 58, 2 sony f36am, a minolta 5600HS

thanks

In addition to the 55-300mm being optically superior, the extra reach has always been useful to me.
