Item for Sale
Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens

Asking Price
290.00 USD

Item Location
MN (United States)

Item Description
I love this lens but I usually want zoom so this lens has gotten very little use. Please read reviews -- Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database . My copy takes great shots but does exhibit some front focusing -- I am able to correct on my K-30 by setting fine focus adjustment to -7 or -8; then I have had no troubles.

I can't answer technical questions about lens performance, image quality in various aspects, etc. It seems to work great to me; beyond that, please read reviews to learn about the lens. I believe my copy to be normal (except for front-focusing, but some would consider thatnormal for this lens).

Original box, case, and hood included; also front and back caps. No manual.

I ship fully ensured, and eat the Paypal fees myself.

DISCOUNT POSSIBLE: I am selling several lenses on PF right now. Anyone purchasing more than one will pay only the $20 flat shipping cost, and might get a further multiple-item discount; let me know if you are interested in that! I have some really nice and fairly cheap lenses for sale!

Sigma 24-60mm F2.8 EX DG lens

Asking Price

Item Description
Body seems to work perfectly and be in excellent condition; seems to take great shots as expected. I really like this lens, but in my course of collecting lenses, I ended up with two of these, so need to sell one! This is one of the most used lenses in my collection.

Lens glass has a few tiny imperfections in the coating, and because of this, I could not list the condition above "poor". (This seems to me a weakness of the PF Marketplace, but it's the rules.)

I finally attached the lens to my K30 and took some photos on a fairly nice day. A little nicer quality/detail when attached to a better body, I think. The barn photo (sorry it is a bit crooked) was taken about 1/5th mile away from the barn.

Also lowered the price!

FYI all interested, I am going to post new photos since my K30 is now fixed and I can use that rather than my old K-x.

UPDATE: Due to a family trip we moved up, this is being delayed; apologies.

Item for Sale
Sigma 400mm F5.6 APO (AF) Tele-macro (price reduced)

Asking Price
435.00 USD

Item Location
Minnesota (United States)

Item Description
I bought this really nice lens used when I was much more into photography some years back. I have not used the lens much, and really can't justify it sitting around when someone else could be enjoying it and I could do something else with the money! Plus, I have amassed far too large a lens collection over the years -- so this baby is going, sadly.

As far as I have seen (from monitoring the Marketplace and eBay from time to time), this appears to be a fairly rare lens, and users like it a lot -- see reviews at Sigma 400mm F5.6 APO (AF) v3: 1995 > Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database -- average user rating is 9.00 / 10! It is fun to use because of both its reach and its macro capability. And SO much cheaper than the Pentax-FA 400mm!!!

I cannot discern any functional or optic flaws in this copy hence the rating of Excellent, though I am not an expert. Note that there is some stickiness of the finish on the body near the lens; the review page states this can happen with age.

The sample pics are from a K-x and later from a K-30, both jpeg right out of the camera downsized for posting. The shot of the barn was taken about 1/5th mile away from that barn! And with a good T/C you could get even more reach.

Case, tripod mounting bracket, and both end caps included. Will pack very well.

AF540FGZ - will not fire

Yes this is an old thread, but I was experiencing the same problem as the OP and now it is fixed. I will share all I did, in the hopes that this may help someone else, because I was about to sell it as broken for a small amount on eBay, and now I am happily able to use it!

Nutshell:
- power on
- press Mode button to cycle through the modes
- when get to P-TTL, the Ready lamp (Test button) lights up for about 1 second, then goes off
- with flash on camera, get ready to take a shot that will require flash -- half-press shutter and hold half down
- cycle through modes again; when you reach P-TTL and the Test button lights, fully depress shutter to take photo
- flash fires!
- flash becomes Ready and STAYS ready as it should -- and never returns (so far) to that bad state it was initially in!

More things I tried:
- fairly fresh batteries
- since I'd bought the flash used and the prev owner had left batteries in it, and a battery got corroded, I used steel wool to clean the battery contacts well
- tried cycling through other things, zooming, etc.
- when I once saw the light on and pressed Test and it fired, it did NOT return to normal operation; it only did when I fired the flash from the camera, taking a photo
- turned no and off several times
- it is possible that I initially mounted the flash on the camera without pushing it FULLY into the hotshoe; it may have had imperfect contact, therefore, with the camera
Note: I have not tried wireless mode.

My guess is that the flash got into some sort of incorrect internal state, and whatever I did allowed it to fire and reset to the correct state. It lost its mind, then got it back. :) But that is just a guess.

As far as I know, the flash has not been abused or handled roughly, but as noted, I was not the original owner.

Hope this helps someone!

Survey with shutter count and aperture block or shutter failure.

K-30 bought slightly used on eBay late January, 2013, manufacture date 2012:06:28.

Definitely has symptoms of "the dreaded aperture block failure", but I have not had that diagnosis confirmed by a technician; I am assuming that is the problem.

I first noticed the underexposed photos when shutter count was around 8986 (that is the oldest photo in my collection I can find quickly when I am certain the symptoms were manifested); that was just over a year ago, and I have seen the incidence of the underexposure increase. I had had no problems before that time that I recall.

I first thought it was the lens, because it seemed to occur only when using one lens -- the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II. When it started happening with other lenses, I was not sure whether to be sad or relieved -- at least the problem was not the expensive lens!

It at times seems to be worse / more likely to occur when I am pointing the camera down even slightly; I have not noticed any other tricks or tendencies with my particular K-30 body.

At this point, I continue to use the camera, though it is frustrating losing so many shots, and am considering the K-3ii or K-70 once I can save up some dough for one. It seems not worth the cost to fix. Sad, as my K-30 was an upgrade to my K-r, which had the problem front-focusing in tungsten lighting... from one problem child to another. I may just shelve the K-30 for now and use my backup, a K-x.

Thanks for starting this thread and for the survey.

I have not read through this thread, so maybe it's been suggested ... but my plea to Pentax would be to somehow offer those of us with failed cameras a coupon for $ off an upgrade, perhaps with a trade-in ...

DA 18-55 AL II lens (with box and accessories) only: $70 *SOLD* shipped to CONUS and paypal'd

Item Location
Rochester, MN (United States)

Item Description
Lightly used K20D kit plus extras -- includes the following:

The body:
K20D body, SN 3028326, with shutter count, as reported by PhotoME, of under 1900 clicks!
Original Pentax battery
Original Pentax battery charger
Original Pentax strap
Original cables (USB, PC video out)
Original documentation (K20D Operating Manual, K20D Quick Guide, Software manuals)
Original software CDs
- Pentax Remote Assistance 3
- Pentax Photo Browser 3
- Pentax Photo Laboratory 3 (powered by SilkyPix)
Generic body cap
Original hotshoe cover
Original finder cap (to cover viewfinder if not using it, so no light gets in there; e.g. on tripod)
Original kit and lens boxes
One additional Pentax battery
One additional Pentax battery charger (so you can charge both batteries at once if needed!)
One additional K20D Operating Manual
8GB Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 SDHC memory card
(Note: The additional strap in the photo is not included.)

The lens:
SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II (original hood, original front cap, generic back cap)
(Note: The lens hood DOES come with its little side cover; I initially could not find it.)

As noted, I am not the original owner. This was a backup body for awhile for me, and I purchased it from a man probably in his 50's who bought it new, took some classes, and decided it was just too much camera for him, which explains the low shutter count. Because I am not completely sure how it was treated before I got it, and because it is not quite perfect, I listed it in Excellent condition rather than Like New.

The lens appears to me, and works, Like New.

DxOMark rates Pentax K-r

Hi all, great discussion. I do look at DxO numbers, but all the reviews I can get my "eyes on" as well.

As for K-x vs. K-r, some say sensor is essentially the same or exactly the same, others say different. I'd like to make one observation that is solely based on the PhotographyBlog review: If we trust that the reviewer took the sample images for both cams under the same conditions, then the sensor in the K-r does appear to be different: the RAW shots of the K-r seem to be cooler than those of the K-x. See Pentax K-x Review - Image Quality | PhotographyBLOG versus Pentax K-r Review - Image Quality | PhotographyBLOG , and note the RAW shots in the Noise section.

When I was originally deciding which brand to buy for my first DSLR, I did notice that Pentax DSLRs tended to produce warmer toned photos, or what I'd at first glance call yellowish, though that can of course be adjusted with white balance and post-processing. I liked what I saw as the finer-detailed output of the Pentax, and didn't mind the warmer tones, and I have been happy with my K10D ever since I gave Pentax the nod. However, it appears from the PhotographyBlog's samples that the warmness difference may no longer be true, with the K-r. Do others see this? Is this a good or bad thing? Should I have started a different thread to discuss this?

K-x image similar to Point&Shoot

As for the increased resolution making it more noticeable, I was having that exact thought when I read your post! :-) I would have liked to have seen some comparison shots -- the subject of this thread compares the K-x to a P&S: how 'bout some shots taken with a P&S of similar resolution, and the K-x, then show 100% crops of both -- or do some more experimenting with the two, side-by-side.

I used to think that base ISO should be noise-free across the frame, in all situations. I found from both experience and reading that dark colors, shadow regions, etc. are indeed prone to noise -- so little light reflected from such dark regions, I think. I still have a bunch to learn... thanks for participating in this great thread, everyone! I am looking to get a K-x sometime soon... that high ISO performance is wooing me sweetly...

Trap focus, K10d, s-m-c TAKUMAR F1.4
Posted By gimmepizza

Hey all,

Old thread, I know; but I just learned about this "trap focus" technique, so thought I'd try it out last night. I tried with a Pentax-A 50mm f2, and with a Sears 135mm f2.8, both wide open (my goal is low/moderate indoor light photos of a staged production).

Trap focus worked for me, but results were not as good as I'd hoped. I tried coming at the focus point from both far and near, both adjusting quickly and slowly. Because of low light conditions, I was not able to get a decently-exposed shot in less than 1/15th second, and was hand-holding, so was likely not able to stop adjusting focus and be still enough to get as good results as I could have; however, I had greater success with manually "focus bracketing". By focus bracketing I mean switching to MF, getting to where I think focus is best, backing off a bit, then, while holding down the shutter in continuous mode, moving focus to and past the point I thought was best. I fire off between 6 and 10 shots, and every time I tried this, I got one or two well-focused shots, which always were in better focus than the one I'd taken using trap focus.

My testing was limited to wide open aperture, in only one lighting condition, with only those two lenses. I will likely use the focus bracketing technique at a dress rehearsal of a play my kids are in, with the 50mm lens, next week.

Item Description
I bought a second K10D as part of a package, but my wife and I decided we just can't afford to keep a backup at this time. I'd REALLY like to keep that Tamron lens, but that has to go, too. *SIGH* I have used all these items myself, and found everything to work very well, though I am relatively new to DSLRs, so can't say I am an expert by any means. I am doing my best to grade this stuff conservatively and to the best of my knowledge!

I am new to PentaxForums.com and have no feedback here; however, I have perfect feedback of well over 400 on eBay, id = gimmepizza (just like here). Feel free to contact me via eBay and I'll confirm from that email that it's me. :-)

Further details as follows:

K10D: To me, looks basically new and functions perfectly as far as I can tell. I'd have marked it "Like New" but since I am not the original owner and it has 4948 clicks on it, I thought I'd better stick with "Excellent".

18-55 Pentax lens: The lens looks NEARLY new. The one exception that I noticed, and the reason I had to mark this lens as "poor" condition (see
condition key), is one very small bright spot (reflects light more when shone on it) on the very outer edge of the front glass surface, which might be a fleck missing from the coating. I have read elsewhere that these spots may just be contamination that can be washed off gently; however, I am worried I'd damage the lens more if I do this, so I am simply taking some off the price and will sell it as-is. I have noticed no problems with image quality, though I do not really "pixel peep" the images I take. See the close-up of the lens below -- the "bright spot" is next to the "55" written on the ring around the outer element. One other thing I must disclose is that, when examining the lens very carefully, I did notice a very little stickiness in the zoom mechanism toward the wide end. I never noticed it in actual use, but it could possibly be an issue to you.

18-250 Tamron lens: This lens looks brand new to me, though as noted earlier, I am not a seasoned expert. So I list it as "Like New" rather than "Mint". I was surprised that the manual focus ring has a "gritty" feel/sound to it, but read that this is normal with this lens, even brand new.

Tamrac camera bag: Complete with all velcro-adjustable pads and straps, looks like new to me. I decided to just make due with another, cheaper bag I have.
