i have never understood why you can disable it on the K10 and not the K20...i assume every rig after the K20 you were able to turn it off...?

thats exactly where i take care of the noise - but im wanting to shoot more time lapses of the night sky and the gap between each shot with DFS makes everything a little janky :/ so hearing that it can be disabled on the K3 made my day!!

K3...dfs?

my first pentax DSLR was the K20 (which i still use and love just as much now as i did when i first purchased it) but it frustrated the hell out of me that you could not turn off DFS (dark frame subtraction) so i picked up a used K10 a few months after buying the K20 just to use it for night shots only. yesterday i ordered the gunmetal prestige edition of the K3 and i am wondering...does the K3 behave like the K20 does in respect to DFS? or can you turn it off like you can with the K10???
thanks!

thanks for the insightful replies! stevebrot pretty well nailed some of my concerns about using one of these things but no infinity focusing under 90mm wont cut it for me! the only reason i was going to get one of these is because i have an amazing 4x5 set up but just NEVER use it (i do shoot film still though!) so i thought with the adapter i would at least get some use out of the TOYO. that said - im just going to start using it. i have about 100 sheets of different types of polaroid 4x5 film to play around with too but i have only processed 3-4 good shots out of probably 25 sheets used :(

recently picked up an extra 645 to use as a back up that was bundled with a couple of lenses and some extras (filters, couple of 120 backs etc) but also came with this random adapter that i can not seem to find any information on...it seems too small for the 645...any ideas? it just says 7000/9000 +P/K on the side and nothing else.
thanks!

my K20 has been my default camera since i purchased it in 2009 - but last year i was able to pick up a K10 body with a kit lens on ebay (with only 2000 shots taken!!!) and i did so just to have a dedicated body used for night shots or long exposures (almost exclusively). now - i love my K20 and prefer the image quality it produces over the K10 but my biggest complaint about the K20 was not an issue with the K10 - that being DFS. i believe it is the most overlooked benefit of the K10 and to this day i have never understood why pentax did not give us the option with the K20!!! it SUCKS waiting 4 minutes to see a 4 minute exposure (as i am certain many of you will agree). thanks for this thread! i will use my K10 until it literally dies, or until i do!

Pentax K10D long exposure noise reduction when shooting RAW?

i am a devoted K20 user but the DFS was killing me so i bought a K10 body just for night shooting. since you can turn DFS off i dont understand why the OP was complaining as the ability to turn it off is right there in the menu. clean up the noise in post and save yourself the beating of sitting there for 30 minutes waiting to take another shot. this is especially important when shooting spinning wool as you need about a 5 second exposure and the wool burns out in about 10-12 seconds so waiting around to shoot another shot means you just missed the other shot!

i agree - we fell behind the curve several years ago and though some of the gear that has come out has been great, overall pentax seems to be roughly 6-12 months behind everyone else. i am a devoted pentaxian and have been going on 30 years now but at times it is with reluctance. mostly i stay with pentax because i love the backwards compatibility of their glass - and seeing as i have a shit ton of it, i really have few complaints about their body line up. other than being one of, if not THE. noisiest of noisey i still love most of what pentax puts out ( i still use my k1000 and 645 regularly) but if they dont step up their DSLR game in a major way soon i am thinking of dumping all of my digital pentax gear on ebay, keeping the k1000 and 645 and switching digital systems entirely.

i picked up a k10 with a grip to back up my k20 and it is a great feeling to have two rock solid rigs in my bag at all times. i just checked the shutter count on the k10 and it was only 2200!! i really love being able to turn off DFS too.

barrel distortion

well - i AM using a DA lens - the 10-17mm in fact and at the price point pentax sells it for i dont really think there is a better lens in that focal length range. yes - shooting at 17mm would prevent some of the barrel distortion but why only use the 10-17 at 17mm? 10mm looks great for certain shots - my intent here is to de-fish some of the ones at 10mm so they arent quite as wonky. excuse me if im reading your post wrong but i dont see how you could tell me to get a better lens when the 10-17mm is one of the best lenses pentax makes...

barrel distortion

hey all - just wondering which methods you guys use to fix barrel distortion - ive used the photoshop way but you have to crop to get rid of the background that shows after fixing the distortion. ive tried PTlens and rectfish as well - rectifsh seems to do the best job but for a $30 license fee to use it - im not entirely sold on it yet. are there other programs out there or a PS action that work with barrel distortion?? i love using the SMC DA 10-17mm but the distortion at 10mm only works on certain shots and overusing it lends itself to boredom. so any recommendations? i found the LR presets for the 10-17mm but havent been able to figure out how to get it loaded up - some help there would be appreciated too. ive seen the other threads about the presets but never found anything too specific about how to load them and use them...
i have been accepted into the fort worth main street arts festival and have several shots i want to use in my booth but feel the wonky nature of the 10-17mm isnt as marketable as i would like so i need to 'fix' some of those shots in order to feel confident in displaying them for sale. any recommendations or help is appreciated! cheers and happy new year to my fellow pentaxians!

the K20 is well worth a purchase still. i have little to no interest in video capabilities so the k7 doesnt really do anything for me - and i dont shoot sports so i dont need a faster frame rate. what i do need is a rock solid beast of a camera - the weather sealing is wonderful as it also seals against mold and asbestos - two of my most common problems when shooting. K20 FTW!

Lens Cap Replacement

Hey all -
i emailed pentax 2 weeks ago and still have yet to hear anything back from them so i am going where i should have gone in the first place...HERE!
i need to get a replacement lens cap for the 10-17mm fish - eye. the nice metal one. the lining on the interior side of mine came out recently and now it will not stay on the lens - and given the severe curve of that lens - it is not going to end well for my little friend i am afraid. right now it is off my k20 body and has a couple of rubber bands around it to hold the cap in place. anyone know where i could get a replacement cap or if there is a 3rd party cap that is comparable? if you have this lens then you know how sweet that metal lens cap is! ive searched the usual suspects and found nothing...any ideas where i could find one?
thanks!
