How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

So the SDM on my 16-50 failed for the second time and it is my go to lens so it was time to try to convert it to screw drive. The instructions say to use PKTether. I am a Mac user and PKTether does not work on a Mac. So I worked it out piecing the instructions together from the various posts. I got my 16-50 to work using my K7.

Attached is a PDF with the instructions and screen shots.

If you have any comments / corrections let me know and I will update the file.

Who else loves the 16-50mm?

I have had mine for 4 years now and I have over 50,000 images that I have taken with it. It is a versatile lens and I have carried it to every state and province in Canada and the US. The size is not an issue because I know I will get great images with it.

Lens recommendations for catching cycling

I agree with Ron. We saw the tour when we were in Germany in 2005. We were near the end of a flat stage and 180 riders were by us in 3 seconds. I was against the fence so a 50mm or shorter would be good (there is only the road width or less away). The next day we were near the middle of the stage near a feeding station and the pace was much more relaxed but the 50mm would have done just fine. I used my point and shoot and got reasonable shots with it. The caravan (the sponsors vehicles) comes in before the riders - and it is like a parade at 30 mph. The vehicles are very entertaining.

Odd white dots in post processed K-5 IIs files?

I have some unexplained white dots and line in some of my K5iiS images. I have not sharpened them but I use Aperture and part of the import process includes some light sharpenning. I will have a closer look at them tomorrow and post some examples. This happened when I was shooting in a dark shaded area.

Largest Print Size with a K-5

I have a bunch of canvas prints the largest is 60 inches X 42 inches and another one that is 48X40 - both taken with my K7. It's all about viewing distance and what you are printing on and how good your printer is - my printer is really good but I pay him quite well. Canvas is quite forgiving, Gloss photo paper is not. I had one at an art show and people were walking up wanting to touch it because it looked like a painting.

I have that exact set up with the SuperProgram, flash bracket and AF280t. I use with my K7 as well. As mentioned it works in manual mode. I have also picked up some Cactus v5 triggers as well for triggering the flash to give me more flexibility as I have more than one flash.

Pentax wants to hear what you think?

I had my call with Jim Malcolm the other day. My concerns include upgrading from my K7, tethering, flash issues and the supply chain in Canada. I did not ask about FF (I figured it had been beaten to death) or video (I have only used video on the K7 twice).

I said I was waiting to find out what was going to be announced at CP+ before I order the K5iis- Jim suggested I should buy now rather than wait (I took that to mean that there was nothing coming soon). I then said the K5iis is not available here and the shop wants to be prepaid for any special orders - he asked which store I deal with.

We talked about quality control and SDM issues and he said that he thought the SDM issues had been overblown by the press. I told him my 16-50 spent 10 weeks at Pentax Canada being fixed - he said "Sorry".

It sounded like the flash issues had been raised a number of times and that they are working on it.

I also mentioned that the Pentax Canada site was showing the K5 and not the ii or iis - he had a good laugh and said that he was seeing the guys from Canada later that day - so now Pentax Canada have removed the K5 from the splash screen but they do have a link to the ii and iis details.

He also said they were working on a world wide co-ordinated information system so that everyone would be getting the same information without waiting for someone to interpret interviews. It sounded like that would roll down to the web page information as well.

Overall it sounded like he was listening and he had listened to the other people he had talked to because he was aware of the issues that have been raised.

You must be dealing with a different Pentax Canada than I am.

The shops around here complain that there are distribution problems with Pentax as they have changed distributers again.

I was looking for the adapter so I could use my 645 lenses with my K7. In the US it was available on the Pentax site for $225 but they would not ship to Canada. I contacted Pentax Canada and they told me it would be $625, then they phoned me back and said it was not longer available - but it was in stock at the Pentax US site.

They also took 10 weeks to fix my 16-50 - waiting for parts.

The Pentax Canada site still does not show the K5II.

Maybe this will change maybe it won't.

Getting impatient for that DA* ~16-80!!

I have the DA* 16-50 and it has lived on my K7 for over 2 years. I would not have any problem buying a new one if something happened to mine. If I was looking at an upgrade I would go to a prime(s) but it would have to be faster than 2.8.

What are your thoughts on "upgrading" to a K5II/s after reading the review?

From the K-5 II / IIs Review:

"Pentax has informed us that future plans include the introduction of a high-end APS-C DSLR as well as a full-frame DSLR."

I wonder when this will come out and what is included in a "high-end" APS-C DSLR that is not already in the K5 II / IIs?

As a K7 owner I was ready to drive down to the store to get the K5 IIs until I read the line about an advanced APC coming (soon?). Now I am wondering if I should wait. I would like FF but then I need new lenses and maybe a new computer (to process the larger files) so the investment is too much. I think I can work around the deficiencies of the K7 for a few more months. It is too bad that Pentax did not include the advancements achieved in the K30 in the K5 II.

The problem for me is going to be the lenes. I hope Pentax will also come out with / reissue a series of FF lenses. The 15mm for example. I am also hoping that it will be easier to manually focus the fast lenses.
