I just got my new K-50 also. Main reasons were WR and per-lens fine focus adjustment.

Hi Rick,

How old are the eneloops? How have you been charging them? Are you using Pentax battery adapter or a third-party one?

I'm not sure what you mean by the last question.

Battery Questions

Everyday rechargeables: Eneloops.
Emergency backup: Energizer Ultimate Lithium.

Also get a quality charger that charges cells individually. Cheap chargers will charge batteries in pairs, either 2 or 4 at once, but not 1 or 3. I use the MAHA C9000 at home. A good travel charger is hard to find. Even most 'brand name' travel chargers only charge in pairs. If you're having trouble finding the Eneloop charger, the Sony BCG34HLD4KN package includes a good quality travel charger and four low-discharge cells that might be rebranded Eneloops.

Never mix different brands, capacities, or ages of cells. I mark all of my cells on receipt with a set number (for each four cells) and which cell within the set (1-4). The cells are connected in series to form the battery and the performance of the battery is limited by the weakest cell. Cells used differently will age differently, so the idea is to keep all the cells in a set together as they age.

What the hell?

Perhaps there was a bad connection from camera to lens. In both cases the camera was commanding the lens to F1.4, but in the dark exposure the lens was receiving a different value and stopping down further. Perhaps there was some crud between camera and lens, or there's an intermittent failure inside the camera (since it happens on more than one lens). I don't know any specifics of how the camera signals to the lens and how feasible this could be.

I think that an articulated screen would have to be smaller than a non-articulated screen. I would much rather have the bigger screen. For those hard to look through the viewfinder shots, the ability to wirelessly transmit the image to something like a google glass would be great.

battery problem

Can you give details of your camera, batteries, and charger?

Don't waste time with alkalines. The problem is the camera's high current draw. Alkalines simply cannot handle it.

You could try Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA.

Red "8" on K,M,A,F lenses from 16 to 35

As the attached photos show, these marks weren't just limited to the wide angles. Here they are on a telephoto (Takumar (Bayonet) 135mm f/2.5).

There are three sets of colored f-stops (blue f/4. orange f/8, yellow f/16) and corresponding colored focus distance marks.

Notice also the red dot below the left side focus mark for f/11. Perhaps that is for IR?

I was taught to just line up the infinity distance mark with the line corresponding to the selected aperture. The other line would tell you the closest distance that would be in focus.

Seems very simple to me and works for any aperture.

What's the verdict on the 18-135?

I'm very happy with my 18-135 and haven't looked back. I don't think I've used the kit lens since I got the 18-135. I like not having to change at 55mm when walking around since I like taking lots of photos both longer and shorter than that.

Alright, Which Lens from the Roadmap is on your Buy List?

Several might be possibilities depending on the details, but the DA Tele Zoom is very appealing. I would very much like to upgrade from my current Tammy 70-300. That was a cheap way to get that focal length range after I first switched to Pentax, but I would like to upgrade to something better. The DA Tele Zoom looks like it would be ideal. A short end near 135 would complement my DA 18-135. I would really like it to have DC motor and WR. Close focusing ability at the long end would be a nice bonus. Fast enough to use with the DA AF RC 1.4x would be great.

Bishops call Obama's contraception compromise 'unacceptable'

Why the focus only on contraception? What about religious objections to other medical services? For instance, some people object to blood transfusions. Can they provide health insurance that doesn't cover anything that requires a blood transfusion? Some people object to any form of western medicine and believe solely in prayer based healing. Can they provide "health insurance" that only covers prayer sessions?

Why no "real" normal lens for apsc

The K30/2.8 would also qualify as a "normal" lens on APSC, especially if its focal length really is on the short side of 30.

kx with rechargeable lithium battery

A smart charger is one that senses when the battery is fully charged and terminates the charge. In contrast, a dumb charger is one that just charges for a predetermined period of time. If the battery is not fully discharged, a dumb charger will overcharge it. Smart chargers look for signals like a very slight drop in voltage that occurs when the cell is fully charged, or a rapid rise in temperature that occurs once overcharging begins. For either of these signals to be reliable, the charge rate must be fast enough that a full charge takes 2 hours or less. Charging faster than about an hour is also bad. By the time the terminating signal is received, a substantial overcharge may have already been delivered. So 1-2 hours charge time is the sweet spot.

A good charger will also charge every battery individually, instead of in pairs. Sometimes one battery goes bad, and if you're always charging in pairs this will either undercharge one battery or overcharge the other or both.

It's cheaper to build a dumb charger that charges in pairs, so most places that cater to unknowing customers who select the cheapest charger on display (including big stores with even less knowledgeable sales staff) will only have non-ideal chargers to pick from.

See here for an overview of suitable chargers.

Why was the K-r discontinued?

I have a drawer full of old cell phones that I don't use anymore because they all stopped working. And I hate buying new ones because it's impossible to see how well they actually work as a phone, before you buy, and the reviews just gush about all the latest useless "features", but not how well it works as a phone, and you have no data about how reliable and robust they are. My last several phones all had great reviews, but I would describe them all as lemons.

But before you this information gets out, that model is discontinued and "the new model has fixed all the problems with the old model". Bah, humbug. The phone makers are laughing all the way to the bank.

K-x is not specified to work with rechargeable lithium batteries. See the manual, page 39, second bullet point. The voltage is a lot higher than the camera is designed for. You're lucky you haven't fried the electronics.

Ditto.

NiMH batteries wear out with use, Yours are too worn out for use in a high drain device. Time to get a new set and use the old ones in something less demanding (like a remote).

Give Eneloops a try for your new set.

Don't believe the marketing number called mAh. Eneloops can deliver just as much effective power as most cells marked with more mAh.

What brand(s) of AA NiMH are you using?

Have you tried a second set of known good NiMH batteries?
