A DSLR and a small prime. No flash. Have fun! I would have a really hard time going back to film for low light stuff especially if I had a K1 sitting around.

As you have found out, this form of wildlife photography tends to require another level of precision and technique. 200mm is really on the short end, but can be done. Focusing is easier when the bird fills the frame more. You need to move the AF points around and really try to focus on the head and not the body. If you look at videos of bird photographers on YouTube that are using big lenses like 600mm f4 they almost never shoot wide open for birds. F8 is not a bad place to be on an APSC body. It really comes down to practice and getting close enough.

The KP,k3 and others are leds that are injected into the back of the prizm. The K1 and K3iii are an lcd screen between the mirror box and prizm and are side lit with a red led I believe.
I think the K1 and K3iii tech is more refined but I like the previous tech just fine and as you mention it has advantages.

It's a keeper! Upgrade the firmware to the latest. Definitely improves autofocus a bit.

Simple. Export your settings so that you can import them indo darktable and you won't ever have to deal with that again.

I think pentax pulled the latest 645 project because of fujifilm. At least that's the rumor. I don't particularly see the attraction to the Fuji MF system, but then again I'm not the target audience. I can't even convince myself yet to upgrade to full frame!!!
But I don't know if the investment in the bodies is all that great. And the lenses don't seem extraordinarily different in any way. Fuji knows how to make this stuff already so I don't really see them needing to poor eons of engineering into their MF line.

Buy it new if you are worried about sdm. My first copy was used and the sdm was not working well. I returned it, bought a new one for a ridiculously good deal and love the thing. It is the reason I haven't bought a fa 43 or 77 yet. Just can't justify them.

My kp is new to me by only a few months, so no k3iii for me for a while. But please, when you guys find out it is too heavy for it's size, or that the mirror in those things makes it a relic, or that there is no histogram in the ovf, please put it in the marketplace and I will try to put you out of your misery.

That's why I don't have any silver camera bodies or lenses yet. And that's the real reason I haven't switched to mirror less!!!

My tamron 70-200 does focus fine in live view. I did have to adjust af for pdaf to be accurate. It does get much better at f4 for just a out everything. Contrast, sharpness, flare, etc. But I find it still useable wide open. I think it is a fantastic portrait lens and it is light compared to others in it's class and does well in nature. 70-200 is a favorite focal length on APSC for me to have out on nature walks.

My daughter got my istDL when she was 8. Then she gave it to my son when he was 8 and she got a Fuji x100s I found cheap and wanted to see if I liked Fuji and the rangefinder form factor.
The real problem now is when we travel everyone wants to bring their gear. :) I did it to myself. Fair warning.

There is a 2 year gap in my photo archive around the time my kids were toddlers. I regret that.
My family now loves to go on hikes and travel in general. I gave up taking pictures of stuff. Now I bring my gear to take great memories of our trips. And the photos really are fantastic. :)
A few things I have learned to make life easier. I have moved from shoulder bags like domke, which I love btw, to backpacks. I tend to take a few lenses on a trip but on each outing pick one and stick with it. I also tend to prefer telephoto and fast - two things that makes photos distinct from phone snaps. And primes.
I tend to like non photo backpacks as well. Usually I will pack a camera and lens and the family wants a bunch of other stuff too in there. That's fine. I just throw the photo gear in with a wrap or small case of some kind.
I am exploring capture clips like peak design. I do have their neck straps and I tend to just wear the straps cross body. Tighten up the strap and push the camera around on your back and it makes it easier to carry kids and move around freely. Peak design straps make it easy to change where the camera is anchored so you can hang it different ways based on lens and mood.
Last summer I travelled with a 300, 55, 21 and 15. We have started hiking on weekends already this year. I pick a lens for the day and out I go. Last weekend was the 100mm macro. Before was the 20-40. This weekend, who knows.
One other thing. I have my camera out until I lose interest and then am not afraid to throw it back in the bag. And a comfortable backpack is a wonderful thing!

Most people can't tell a difference in prints past 200dpi on most print substrates. If it's canvas, it's significantly worse. :) My 24mp camera will make a very nice 24x36 print and therein lies the problem. As the print gets bigger people stand further back. 4k monitors are great and I don't people are going to sit close enough to actually use up all of that resolution. I actually think the k1 36mp is about as perfect a balance as you can get and I'd rather have the better dynamic range than more pixels. Some people do output larger or require certain professional standards for stock art and such. But for most usage, I think we have hit the sweet spot in terms of useful resolution.

I personally would love the KP form factor to live on. I love mine and if pentax folks put their new sensor, proc and AF into this little body, I'd be a super happy camper. Well make the raw buffer something like 12-15 too.
Even better, stick a 24mp full frame sensor in it and that would convince me to move to full frame once and for all. I don't actually think that is beyond the realm of possibility.
I really do love the form factor of that body though. I stayed away because of the initial price (pentax shot themselves with that as they tend to do with most releases) but once I found one at a price I liked, it has been just a lovely camera.

I consider the DFA 100mm macro WR an honorary DA limited. :) Just know that once you get all the others, you're still not done until you have that one too.

That looks like a very fun lens! Yes, 55mm is one of my favorites as well. Both on FF and APSC.

Ok, thanks folks. I think the DA 1.4x is there right way to go. Now to find one before the first air show!

Hey folks, I'm revamping my lens collection and since I'm filling it up with da limiteds, I'm really thinking about this. I have the sigma, and it's great. It was my first nice lens purchase. However, it is quite large and so I leave home without it a lot. For those of you that have used both or the new Pentax, what's the call on switching these out? Also, how would the Pentax work for a long portrait lens?
