Been awhile since I've posted and I'd like to share a few with my HD Pentax 100mmF2.8 AW coupled with the Pentax HD 1.4 converter which I find a great combo on the K3 Mark III.

K-3 III, K28/3.5, ISO 200, 1/1600 at f/4.0
I'm still a bit confused about the f stops with non A lenses. I was messing around with the settings and was able to use any f stop I wanted including f1.0 using the AV wheel regardless of what setting I had on the lens itself. I'm assuming the ability to set something with the AV wheel is to record the f stop and the camera closes to the f stop setting on the lens when the pic is taken. If this is so the recorded f stop of f4 may or may not be correct because I don't remember where I had the aperture ring set:(.

Schneider, beautiful shot and welcome!

Jay, this is a reflection shot in the river flipped vertically and processed, in LR2, to my vision of a Van Gogh, lol.
I pondered whether or not to post this but in the end I knew the 77 could withstand this small discretion. I'm sorry, I don't have a creative bone in my body but every now and then I can't keep from trying:-).

Oh, when Lightroom first introduced the clarity tool (1.4, I think?) I fell in love with it. Then minus clarity was introduced and I'm getting confused as to the timeline. It took me awhile to really discover the very interesting effects of negative clarity. I shoot my Limiteds a lot but I don't post many photos with negative clarity, I suppose because I don't want to have to explain why a Limited shot may look soft or different somehow. Also, I'm still somewhat conflicted, myself, about how I feel about some types of processing. On one hand I want my photos to look as if you're standing where I did when I took the shot, like the fog enclosed lake just above. That shot is very close to what you would have seen in my shoes that morning, the thing is I've been by that spot, probably a thousand times, and that was the only time I've ever seen that scene like it was that morning. On the other hand some shots look very cool processed to bring out some feature or the other. I was pushing things a bit on this one and wanted to see what the reactions would be in this crowd.

Not the best photo but I think this guy is a Western Wood-Pewee, if so this bird is a first for me. Difficult exposure, all of a sudden he was there, I got the shot and he was gone. No getting things just right, Bam he was gone. I would have got the shot with my K-5 maybe but focus most probably would have been much worse than this.

I've seen a bunch of Red Wing Blackbirds in my day but never one with markings like this.

I think I've been capable of something like this for years but I finally have a camera capable of something like this. Thank you Pentax.

It took me over half an hour to get this close to this bird. After he made the nab he looked directly at me (he knew I was there but he also knew the catfish was there) and flew. I got some nice shots of him in the air but I wanted to see him eat that fish:).

Well, I couldn't wait any longer. Amazon had been selling the Mark III for $200 over the $2000 price, Adorama was waiting for more stock, the same as B&H. Then last Tuesday I think it was Amazon had 7 left for the regular price. I gave up the kit from B&H just to get the camera in my hands from Amazon and I couldn't be happier:).

I've taken a few landscapes and to me coming from the K-5 this camera is really something special, the sharpness and the detail and that's why it's hard to take my 300mm off:)

From all the great photos we are seeing I'm beginning to think that this camera is the real deal. I do a lot of racing simulations and we call the really fast drivers "aliens", Franc is an alien photographer. Those shots of the bird eyeing the insect and then catching it by Joehenryd, c'mon that's just sick:). I've been shooting the K-5 and the K20D as backup for the last 9 or 10 years and the K-3 III is just blowing me away.

Ok, I just got off the line to B&H and their representative told me that my confirmed order means that I will get the premium kit when it ships, he wasn't guaranteeing it would ship on any specific date but that I will get the kit when it does ship.
Aslyfox, I hope Adorama pulls through for you:).

cbaytan, I had missed this post till this morning when I read it for the first time. I'll pixel peep, I admit it. How else to check for critical sharpness? I will crop a photo in a micro second to get the composition I want. Isn't this a form of pixel peeping? Especially shooting my telephotos, mainly because I can't afford the reach I need. So, to better explain myself, I will pixel peep mainly to see if I got the focus I was after (usually I manually focus and I'm constantly checking myself to see how I'm doing. I believe this has improved my manual focusing abilities, but I digress) and I will peep when I get a new lens to see what it's capable of. I like to know my equipment. I don't pixel peep countless pictures of brick walls and post threads complaining about the extreme lower right corner or some such bs about a lens compared to some other lens. How many times have anyone shown a picture of theirs to a non photographer friend and have them complain about the lower right corner? We are harsh judges here, we look at a LOT of pictures and we zoom in on all kinds of stuff a regular person never sees. This is good because it pushes us to ever improve our craft but we aren't normal, lol, I mean, seriously. Normal people look at pictures and if it strikes some chord in them, they react emotionaly and think it's a great picture and if it doesn't, they quickly skip on. They don't look at the lower right corner.
That said, I remember the first pics I took with my 31 Limited. The first one was out my back door, I had read about it's flare control so I took a pic of my neighbors RV that had the sun shining on some metal portion of it's top, there was no flare, none, damn I thought. That evening in the house I took an available light shot of Spike wide open. I had never seen bokeh so creamy and the transitions so smooth. So I zoomed into 100% and my jaw dropped, I zoomed to 200% and couldn't believe my eyes. I had never seen a lens look like that at 200%. The 77 Limited is close but I'm not prepared to say it's better. The DA* 300/4 is close but I'm not prepared to say it's better either. And the 43 is almost as close.
In my opinion your statement that the 31 Limited is not good in resolution is wrong, in fact it's resolution is incredible. It's colors are incredible. It's incredible:-). If I sound like a FA 31Limited fanboy, I am. The thing about the 31 Limited is that it doesn't just do any one thing really nice, it does everything really really nice. People are always challenging it and they should. When you claim to be on the top of the heap you are open to challenges. When you are brazen enough to charge the going rate for the 31 Limited you are open to challenges and people are going to pick at you endlessly, but the FA 31 Limited still sits on top of the heap.

Hmmm, I bought my DA* for $1145 or so, $1150 including shipping if I recall. At that time there were F*,FA*'s going for $900 to $1000. I would have bought the F*, preferably just for the tripod collar, or FA* for $700 to $750. Now that, for the time being at least, no telling where the prices are going, you can get a DA* for around $900 to $950 if you look hard enough I probably would have to see the F or FA's in the $600 range if I were to do it all over. The DA* just has to much going for it, tripod collar, weather sealed, SDM focusing. Some people seem to do much better hand holding it than I, although this morning I did a lot better although I was braced in the rig with the lens sticking out the window in the rain, yes, more frigging rain this weekend:-(. But with this lens I didn't have to worry about the rain and that's very cool. I had it out on the tripod in a cold rain, almost snow, back in early December with no ill effects at all, I just wiped everything off when I got back in the truck.
Here's a couple from today at ISO800. Man to be able to shoot at ISO800 with the K20D is huge. I would have liked to use my flash on the geese pictures to try to get a catchlight in their eyes but didn't want to chance it in the rain.

Good luck in this quest! It is slowly driving me crazy. It's like golf. You can go out and shoot 113 and out of those 113 shots you connect with one and it's so sweet you forget about the 112 shanked shots and head out again:-). It's the hardest, most frustrating, expensive type of photography I've tried......and I'm addicted to it even though I've taken only one BIF shot that I'm truly proud of. I have never posted it anywhere because I have nothing else to back it up. Oh, I've got about a million BIF shots on my hard drive but they only prove what I don't know about how to get good BIF shots, it's sad. But that one shot proves, to me anyway, that I can do it and I will not give up until I can do it on purpose:-). Just getting a great bird shot is only a little bit easier. I look up to all the great bird shooters here and if I live long enough I hope to approach their work. It takes tons of practice and luck and by luck I mean the type of luck you make yourself. This is why I love it so much, it's hard. When you finally get close enough you have a fleeting moment to capture the shot and get everything right, it's exciting. And I love birds. I hate herons, though, skittish, scared, aloof creatures who will not give me a break. I don't think having Spike with me every where I go running around at 90 mph has anything to do with it, do you?
:-)
