KEH 20% off

The WOW20 code was part of a promotion that went out via email to subscribers.
They had codes for 50% off (first five buyers only), 40% off (ten buyers only), and so on. If I recall, it was perhaps 50 users for the 20% off code.
When I first saw the email (6am ET), I assumed the 50% codes would have all been claimed already. I looked on their site later at 9am and the WOW20 code was still working but couldn't find a lens in stock that I really wanted. I tried one more quick search and a newly arrived silver DA 15 Limited HD popped up, so I grabbed it for 20% off. I guess I was lucky.

An open source (and free) alternative is Darktable. I haven't tried this myself, but from what I have read it is full featured and somewhat similar to its namesake.

Anyone used Cyberlink PhotoDirector 6 Ultra?

I have been using Cyberlink Photo Director Ultra 6 on my mac for several months now. I had actually participated in its original trial back at version one, so had some familiarity with it. Previously I used Aperture but with its lack of support going forward I decided to try something else and Photo Director was the closest in look and feel to Aperture.

I can't compare it directly to Lightroom since I don't use it.

Pros: familiar (for me) interface in terms of organization/catalog and adjustments, most adjustments are non-destructive, layering functionality, content-aware patching

Cons: a bit clumsy feeling on my old machine (Mac Pro 2009) as it seems be a memory hog, no functionality for geo-tagging (iPhoto and Aperture had that, but Apple has removed it from its initial release of Apple Photos)

As with most post-processing software, it takes some time to learn to get the most out of it.

Hope this helps.

USB-3 vs USB-2 on K-3

I can confirm that you can use a micro USB cable (USB2) with the K-3 to access the memory cards. I had to do that because I had used a UHS-I card that I my old card reader couldn't handle, so connecting the camera was the only way to get the images off the card.

But, as Adam says, you only get USB2 speed.

Hope this helps.

Possible to mount a ring flash to a reverse mounted Takumar 50 1.4 screw mount lens.

Some time ago, I purchased female M42 to 52mm adapter, which allowed me to place 52mm filters, lens caps (and filter-mounted ring flash) on a reverse-mounted Takumar lens. These are available in various places, I recall buying from ebay. I think it was female M42 to male 52mm, which then also required a female-to-female 52mm coupler. Total cost was around $10.

DA*16-50 SDM and MF failure???

I had this symptom on my 60-250 twice, where the SDM stopped working and I couldn't get MF to work (the focus ring turned but the gear seemed to have been disengaged). The first time lasted for a while and by playing with MF I eventually got the lens fully working. A few months later, I had the same issue by for a much shorter time. Since then, no problems.

What I noticed about the two instances was that I was out in the summer sun using the lens for a lengthy period, so I suspect it may be heat related.

Not sure if the midnight applies to the end of the day or start of the day (technically by my reading I'm late), but here's my attempt. Hopefully I'm given the benefit of the doubt on the deadline. It's hard to be different compared to the other entries, I went for a warmer look.

Here's my entry. Glad to see the post-processing challenge active again.

This one was tricky, in the process I learned that Aperture cannot recover deep details like this due to limitations in its RAW processor.

Pentax D-BG4 Grip Shutter Speer Wheel problem

I'll chip in with my experience here. I bought a (used) D-BG4 to use with my K-7 and found that the front dial (by default assigned to shutter speed) not working sometimes. After a small amount of experimenting, it turns out that if I attach the grip with both power switches in the "on" position, all dials (including front) work perfectly. However, if I have one of the power switches in the "off" position, the front dial doesn't always work. Don't know why, but easy workaround for my situation.

I believe you can just download the software and try it out (up to 30 days).
See what results you can get with your images and if you like it, then purchase.

Alternatively, you can post a full resolution image and see if someone who purchased Denoise is willing to try it with your image.

Congratulations to tessfully. I guess baro-nite concurs with my opinion that she was being modest about her effort. I thought fs999 was going to be tough to beat until tessfully came along.

I think you're being a bit modest there tessfully. In my opinion, your entry is a great classic treatment of the image. Ultimately, baro-nite will judge and pick between the more classic vs "unique" approaches.
