Fake bokeh? What have we become??

Right. So what you mean is, we are simply waiting for the day when they make real cameras small enough to fit into a phone.

This has happened before :

Besides, if you can't create something to match your standards, then simply change the standards.
I am newer to photography than some others - and so when i joined photography, i got myself the fast 50. You know, the defacto king of standard. Then i also got myself a 75, a 100, a 125...bokeh king for portraits.

What bothered me is that I never liked the look of any of them. The pictures they produced looked bad to me. Professional photography images looked weird. Not the pictures themselves, by the way, just how they make people look in it.
Then i realized that the reason why: because I have grown up in an age where I 'like' images produced by an iPhone. By instagram, by wide lenses. When i aim my pro camera at myself, i don't look great. I had to go and take out all the strobes and lights and edit to make myself look great.
But use an iPhone, boy, hold it above me, angle it down like any kids do when they take a selfie : BOY do i look slim! No extra work necessary.

And this is how the new generation changes. True, they won't be able to do some things we can - but then they also wouldn't care.

I don't think the camera industry is dead.

It is very much alive, and is now a ubiquitous technology entrenched within every device held by anyone 12 years and up. The technology has grown and expanded and simplified what used to be a complicated process into something that requires 1 button press - it has also made affordable what used to be equipment only professionals can afford.

What is dying, and is in desperate need of a new direction, is professional photography. And by professional photography, i don't mean people who are good at taking images - because there are a lot of kids with iPhones doing better work than professional photographers.
What i mean by professional photography is people who actually do photography for a living. The barrier to entry (Cost/skill/investment) has lowered to the point that anyone who can press a button can take an image, and that means, people with better imagination than me who in the past still needed to make a skill or cost investment, can today make a better photographer than I am without having to learn anything. Case in point, your son who did not understand DOF when you tried to explain it to him.

Photography is here to stay, and the camera industry as well. It will just look different.

PS : I also blame YouTube photographers who a few years ago helped slow kill DSLR by promoting cheaper, lesser technology for convenience and company support. Mirrorless is the new professional photography tool! Well, here we are. Now phone cameras are the new professional photography tools.

That said, for us hobby photographers - none of this matters. I just want the new K1iii pentax - and who cares if the neighbours kid can take pictures better than me.

Thanks all!
Hmm...sounds like I may have to splurge and get an actual dark room safe light - as I wouldnt know what to look for if i was going to get a normal hardware store red light. I will safe the bag method for much later, i think...when i am comfortable doing it.
I will prob ask more questions! thanks for the help :)

Various newbie questions on developing film..

Hi,

I thought i would like to try caffenol - and got myself a patterson tank for a song , used. All with 0 knowledge in developing film! :D
The store I got it from showed me how to load a film on the patterson reel, basically, put the leader on the reel track, and then do the clicky-clicky motion until the end of the film, then just YANK the film out of its canister.
Easy enough.

Question:
1. Can i use ANY red light bulb for darkroom? For example, these : amazon basics
2. If instead of a dark room i'd like to use a black bag, do I need to load the film on the reel *INSIDE* the bag? Why? Isn't it okay to expose the first part of the film to light, i mean, that part is the part that is exposed to light when we load it up in the camera anyway?
3. Youtube and other resources are talking about scissors or bottle opener to open the film canister. Did the store I was talking to made a mistake - when telling me i can simply YANK the film out of its canister?
4. Caffenol recipe calls for "24g Washing soda (multiply by 2.7 if your soda is crystalline -> 65g)" : How do I know if my soda is crystalline or not? Or did it literally mean washing soda that looks like mini crystals?

Huh, this is more confusing than i thought, maybe it isn't that easy. lol.
Thanks for the help...

Some 8 years ago, after being told by one of the important member of a local PPO that upgrading my silly k5 would be the first thing i should do on my road to professional wedding photography, i bought a D800E. Later on, to marry that one decision with another, i also bought a Canon 5K Mark 2. So i've been shooting with those two cameras during my professional outings.

I bought a K1 just for the heck of it, but i didn't really use it much. As with any labour of love turning professional work, i am getting tired of my work. I was not getting better, i was not improving, the 2 systems i carry to my wedding jobs gives me tons of headache in post later. Nikon's images are easily the sharpest, but the raw was lifeless, flat, uninspiring. Canon's images are a bit more reddish, the primes i have for it gives great result....but it looks like every other wedding photographer's work out there.

Then i saw my old work - and realized i was better then. i was better when the photos were labour of love. When the camera was imperfect, but i was pushed to produce...*I* made pictures that was decidedly, mine, and not the camera. I dug out the K1, and now its my main camera in weddings. I wield Canon as my second camera. My assistant uses the Nikon. I don't have great lenses for the K1, but thats okay. I spent the money and got myself some great manual lenses. Yeap, old manual lenses....in a wedding. With their imperfections, glare, colour cast, weird depth of field.

The result speaks for itself.
In every wedding, the Canon gets the most keeper, with images ready to go right after crop. The Nikon comes second with raw images needing teasing so that the colour is more warm, and the highlights and shadows more pronounced. The pentax? With its manual lenses and inability of the old lenses to trigger ttl wirelessly...i get quite a lot less keepers. But each of them I treasure - these are pictures that i feel, has more personality.

Soo...maybe see you later :)

I know what you are saying...though turns out the lens is coming for Pentax.

Also, i do have a Nikon D800, and a Canon 5D Mark 3. Not to brag about my mistakes...if I had to start all over again I may stick with Canon only.

That said, though I understand what you are saying, I disagree. I do want lenses for Pentax. Especially specialty lenses like these. The three cameras have different colour profile, and they all behave differently - and out of all 3, the pentax is the best for me, ergonomically, and the sooc colours and feel.
Also, the most important thing is, the pentax is, to me, a workhorse. All three of these cameras are weather resistant, aluminum body, etc, but thats not all it needs to be a workhorse, to me.
The Pentax, is the lightest, smallest, most affordable one. That means, when I go on a trip, when I have to go down on my knees for macro shots, etc, when I go camping, beach, etc...i grab the Pentax. Trying to handheld a nikon D800 to get a macro shot is the most unpleasant thing to do.
I think its justified for us to want lenses on the cameras we actually want to use.

Its equipped with a water proof front barrel that has LED built in right to the tip.
If thats not what you use it for, then I dont know.

Yeah. lol. I stupidly threw away the tripod mount. Its not easy to hand hold. It weights a few tons. I take it out once in a while to admire it but i never use it for serious shooting.

I own the 75mm 1.9 from Optik Meyer as well as the 58mm 1.9, and while I dont understand the inner workings of the lenses, i can tell you that visually, the lenses themselves are very nice. Typically, i find chinese made product were poorly packaged. The packaging quality of the optik meyer lenses i owned was something else. It beats the packaging of all the lenses I've bought, and I've bought many. Not quite sure if it was a kickstarter thing.
They were adamant that these were hand assembled in germany, and thats what took so long for the kickstarter to fulfill its obligations. The lenses were gorgeous, their communication was outrageously bad, lol. It was a typical german product.

I am very happy with the lenses I own, but I acknowledge that I may have some emotional investment here. But just wanted to give my two cents.

When you are cutting butter, any knife will do and yield the same result.
When you are cutting prime rib ....

In photography, if you are shooting in ideal conditions all the time, your iphone can probably yield the same result.
when shooting in extreme conditions...

Thanks @jbinpg!
@adam I dont think so, unless i can be in video mode without live view on and taking pictures normally. I'll check the dial.

This is the issue with having multiple systems, lol, when things go wrong I get confused how each system does their thing.

Now that I look into it, seems like my dial isn't working. It has never left manual mode so I didn't notice it before - but moving the dials does nothing most of the time. Then it would move to shutter priority sometime, then move back to manual, skipping all the other modes.
Do I have a dial failure or did I somehow have a function on that renders the dial useless?

Trying to activate bulb mode , set the dial to B, but somehow the shutter speed setting always overrides it. What do I do? Haha.

Finally got out in the blackest night , and can't for the life of me figure this out.

Thanks for the help guys.
Looks like my AF160 is broken.

I remembered trying my AF540 before, and i thought it didn't work, but now i realized it was just shooting full power all the time, for some reason.
I popped in a different flash on A mode on the camera, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help!

Hi all,

I've got an old pentax 50mm 1.2 without A setting. I love it, but no matter what I do it won't fire my flash. I even have an old AF 160? that I mounted on, but it wont fire it.
Is there something I can do to make it work? Maybe I just dont know what setting i should have it on.

I am shooting with a K1.

Ya, I am aware, just that someone says that you can actually remove the LX viewfinder as well, right before the advice on making sure the lens is off. Thanks! :)
