She is totally adorable! I remember when mine two where this young and it makes me smile at the memory.

Welcome to the Forum.

I see you posted some photos taken with your K100D. Alas, my only Pentax is the K100D Super, but someday I hope to step up to something higher up. For now it is okay and I have my two children & wife to support. A nicer camera can wait.

Again, nice picture of your daughter.

I see this kind of thing too much these days and it is a very sad and disturbing trend. Family members, spouses and even friends are too "connected" to their devices that they miss out on real personal interactions!

I fear for the next generation as this continues. I want my kids to value "people" and "relationships" and "family" before any device you carry in your hands. God did not create us to be in Relationships with things. He created us to be in relationship with Him and with each other.

Sorry to ramble. This just hits a tender spot in me. My young children could fall victim to this if I am not diligent in my responsibility as their parent.

But the photo certainly captures the moment, or lack of moment for those people. :(

Wow! Lots of good information here.

I have to cry inexperience when it comes to understanding the real effects of chosen focal lengths. It makes sense when I read it here, but remembering to put it into practice when in the field is the hard part. I guess I sometimes want to reduce the number of shots needed to make a panorama composite, but what you said here makes sense after the fact.

I know better than to keep subjects in the center of my shots. Of course I don't always follow that rule or failed to apply it in this composition while cropping the panorama.

I need to look at the source images to see just where that red flare came from. I definitely noticed it after making this image. It was getting late last night and I wanted to post it then look into the "whys" later. It may be some artifact created by Photoshop during the stitching.

Details can be brought out in this and I tried a few things but felt the colors became over saturated with automatic adjustments. It was a dark area where I shot these with a heavy tree canopy overhead. Not much light to make the water stand out, at least not without boosting it artificially.

I think God made our eyes to be the best instrument to view the world around us. Photos can only attempt to capture what we perceive with our vision.

Agreed on the composition needing help. When you are under that outcropping of rocks seeing this in person, it is pretty cool. Even the view through the trees of the Columbia River adds something. It was just hard to capture it all.

Interestingly enough, there were two men working to the right of this composition with tripods on the outside shooting into the falls that day. They were just out of this image group. If they were in there the scale would be more appreciated.

I also notice that scaled down like this, there is lost detail. I am always trying to limit the size of posted images here, not wanting to exceed posting limits. There is also a sort of "pinching" distortion from the stitching process. Could not be avoided doing this pretty much automatically in Photoshop. Plus mine is only the Photoshop 8 Elements app.

I must say that I am so impressed by much of the photographic talent I see here on this forum.

This is one of many magnificent scale working models of steam locomotives that are both on display and in service at the Molalla Train Park.

We took our kids here and rode on scaled down rail cars pulled by tiny locomotives like this one.

The owner of this one was draining his boiler in preparation for loading the train into his truck to take home.

I took a series of 4 photos of that I believe is called Oneonta Falls. It was on a trail starting from Horsetail Falls.

I sometimes like to use Photoshop to stitch together photos taken deliberately with the intention of creating a Panorama. This time I tried the series of shots vertically rather than horizontally. This is the result.
I did not do much more than some auto level correction and auto sharpness to the final cropped image. The rocks overhead are a bit distracting but were part of the scene from which this was taken.

First time posting for critique. I am interested in how people think this experiment turned out. The lens was set to 18mm, as wide as it would go thus creating the need to try this panorama approach to capture the falls.

Be kind.

I see that the EXIF information is different that what I pulled from one of the 4 source images. So I am not sure which image that data came from.

I like Gregory's crop suggestion. It adds balance and even suggests a point of interest in the center boat with the oar and red bucket. But then again I am not against a photo provoking an emotional response, even if it is not a secure feeling. The falling sensation is dramatic to me.

I like the 2nd shot for the perspective and her expression. It's like a stolen glance at a moment in time, which of course is what a photo really captures. Nice.

Where was this taken?

When I was growing up in east Tennessee there were plenty of mills like this to be found, even in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This reminds me of that time.

I like the shutter speed too. You retained crisp details and still see the motion of the water.

Thanks for the comments.

I am posting the first shot from that same evening. This from a different vantage point just as the sun hit the rock. I wanted to try a lower angle and catch the shore grass too.

So are there any tricks to doing a shot like this and retaining some of the dark blue that was still in the sky? I can get more blue but at the expense of composition.

Pulling back on the zoom would have helped too, but I wanted the tighter scene. (Of course there was lens flare that I could not avoid!)

Jim,

Thanks. I was rushed to enter and did not do much with the shot beyond scaling it down. I looked afterwards and believe I have a lot of better shots both from that evening and other times out on the cliffs and beach.

Quite honestly, I need to donate to this forum soon and do a lot more posting!

Again, I appreciate the comments and direction.

A view as the sun began to set in Pacific City, OR. This vantage point put the sun behind the rock off shore for a nice opportunity to shoot into the sunset.

I believe this like all other Pentax lenses works on my K-100D Super? I have a 28-300mm Sigma lens that I like, but it has problems with focus at long focal lengths and a case of "contained" fungus on the front element group. That may be part of the focus issues.

Thanks!

Entry for Contest 55 - "Spring".
Focal length was 80mm in Macro mode.
Still wonder about my camera's auto focus ability.
I always seem to focus beyond where I wanted.

I really like the finished results. Saturation of color may be a tad high considering the background and assumption that warm light may not exist naturally to illuminate her face. But if you had not said anything about the process in PP or the under exposed original shot, I would be left to conclude that you had some remarkable conditions to capture the image.

Final result for me is, she is the main subject. I like the deep colors and especially the warmth of the image. She is in the center of my attention. Isn't that the point of a portrait photo in the first place.

Nice work. Lovely subject.

Ash,

Thanks for the compliments. When I took this, my daughter Emily was not aware that I was photographing her. I wanted to capture this moment as it was happening for her. So the full frame does not have much room for cropping the image any more. Otherwise I would be tossing out elements I wanted to keep. I love this image, even with some of the technical flaws.

Now I need to look over your gallery shots! I'm always impressed with other people's photography work.

Thanks again! I hope we all get to learn how we did in the voting. No matter if I win or not, it's fun to participate and share.

I too only saw a majority but not all of the photos when I went to vote. But then I saw all of them after voting. But I am okay with my picks anyway. Just a shame to now see all of the entries when I did vote.

Of course I have to confess that I made sure to vote for my personal entry.

Okay. I'm brain dead and can't recall without a lot of digging how I last posted my images. Is there a more direct way to post an image rather than having to upload them to my Internet site on Comcast? I feel I am missing something?
