Wow ... I need to post up again ... all I can say is Thanks to Jsherman for getting me into this.

What I need to do now is get out more with my 105mm f/2.8 ... my 20mm f/4 ... and my 35mm f/3.5 when i pick it up ... and then upload some images.

Those wide angle Takumars are excellent, I feel the need for some myself (I max out at 35mm). And I'm still kicking myself for not buying the 135/3.5 when the local store had one. Good photos, folks!

I bought the 70-200 for sports and action and had it out for the first workout a week ago. Works very well with K-50 and machine gun shooting.

Living in Buffalo, NY, I'm fortunate to have several nature preserves within the city limits to hike around and enjoy nature and its many residents.
My Sigma 70-200 EX APO and matching Sigma 1.4 EX teleconverter are still new to me and a work in progress. It's a bit heavy to carry around but the results are worth it. Seemed like every feathered & furry creature was out today and both the lens and myself got a good workout.
All the shots were handheld. Today was a great day off from work :)

At some point the trade off of hours spent on software downloads and shoehorning new software into old operating systems becomes unfinancially sustainable as well as impractical. It may be time for a new computer system.
New cameras often bring with them the need for new systems just so they can process the larger files more efficiently.

see. Understanding Lens Diffraction
As a very very broad general rule... most lenses give their best from maybe 2 or so steps down from their maximum apperature to around the middle of their range. Getting to know each of your lens sweet spots is part of the enjoyment of getting the most out of your gear in a given scenario. So for a F 2.8 - F22 lens you might find the Image quality best at say F4 or 5.6 to F11. As far as my copy of the Sigma 70-210 goes I find it quite good from F2.8 to F11....... but I wouldn't hesitate to use it past F11 if the situation warranted it.
With better quality lenses even using a lens outside of it's sweet spot is quite secondary to the other key elements of a good photograph such as subject matter, light, composition, exposure etc etc.

Yep, still one layer but more control over regions.
There will be reasons individuals have to not like it (I'm not a fan of its image management), but price shouldn't be.
It's very reasonable in what can be an expensive hobby - less than a single lens purchase, for instance. :-)

Generally... Lightroom can do a lot but it generally is for global edits with some limited (although less so now that we are in version 5) local editing. Photoshop is still way more powerful, but LR is aimed at photographers and creating an efficient workflow. I find it easier to wrap my head around.
When I first started using it, I didn't think it was that powerful because of its simplicity but it packs a lot into an efficient workflow to the point where I barely touch any other software, especially in terms of RAW processing.

I use XARA Designer Pro and Faststone for jpegs and RawTherapee for raws. Sometimes I use also Luminance HDR (for hdrs) and Magix Movie Edit Pro (for movies).

The latest version of RAWTherapee works with the K-3 PEF files as well as the DNG files. Photoshop Elements 12's dumbed-down ACR also works with them.
The version of Faststone I have will get the jpeg out of the pef/dng files for the K3, just can't read pull the data from the PEF file (it does work with the K5 PEF files) (press A once an image is loaded for it to load the actual raw file).

Steve, thank you for your contribution.
OP, I also recommend Faststone Image Viewer, it's my go-to software for post-processing. It is free and very easy to use. I drop a folder full of RAW images onto its icon, then when I mouse up to the top of the screen it displays all the images in the folder. Mouse to left edge screen, I get all the menus for pp. Right screen, exif data for the image I am working on.
Simple, free, and it gives good results. Perfect.

I would recommend Lightroom. It's user-friendly and a good all-in-one program without getting too technical.

LR4 has no problem handling K-3 raw files and converting them to jpeg on my Mac. No experience with DOS boxes though.

Try FASTSTONE image viewer.
It will open the DNG and first show you the embedded JPEG version. You can tweak that if necessary then save the JPG.
RAWtherapee may be a RAW developer solution for you too.

No. You have many options. Most raw processing programs seem to be able to open K-3 DNGs although there are a few that are slow to catch up. Try FastStone - it is free and does an amazing amount of stuff. Lightroom is probably the best commercial program but there are many others. Photoshop is probably the worst choice unless you have the special needs it addresses.

I'm not sure why you are having problems with 8.3, but if you can open the dng files in Lightroom I would use that. You should be able to save the files as jpegs or tifs. I would save as a tif, and then edit the tif in Photoshop.

The ACR in Photoshop CS2 (ACR 2.4 is the latest for CS2) supports version 1.1.0.0 of DNG. The K-3 (for reasons I don't understand) writes DNG version 1.2.0.0.
Try this: download the latest DNG Converter from the Adobe website, then convert the K-3's DNGs using "Change Preferences" to set "Compatibility: Camera Raw 2.4 and later".
