I had problem with sensor on my K-7, but that was the first batch of cameras that were selling more then year ago. I haven't seen anyone having problems later, so I presume that is not an isue any more and it's pretty much safe to buy K-7 these days. My first K-7 was replaced by Pentax.

thx Phil! Yes, I shoot RAW, but I use custom b&w style on my camera just to have right feeleng when I shoot and review at the display. I did post in Photoshop, but all it was converting to b&w and making a stronger contrast (squizeeng histogram). But, the right ambiental light is everything for good photo.

This will, perhaps, be a little harder to figure out to someone who did not grow up in skyscrapers, concrete or asphalt. As boys, we had a habit to gather along the walls of buildings, in a corners, hiding in the dark "underground" garage, where our parents and the neighbors won't see us. There, where everything that could fall from the sky was actualy falling on concrete - dead birds, cigarette butts, burnt dinners. Those were our places for the imagination, a little scary and full of boys legende. Kids are no longer gathering there. Where are the boys these days? At shopping centers?
Shoot with K-7 + Carl Zeis Flektogon 35/2.4. And the rest of this series can be seen on jadran.boban |

This defenetely is not a sensor problem, as photo is properlly recorded in JPG, so sensor works well. Could be SD card as other suggested. Does RAW files show as this one on camera screen? And, what software do you use to view/edit RAW images?

I've just checked - it starts full size when image is JPG, in RAW is the other way round. In first post I was refering to RAW images. But, anyway, it's obviously normal.

Same on my K.7, It is normal. But, the image begins as "croped", and then shows in full size. I guess that camera loads low resolution preview first for faster viewing, and after a moment it loads larger resolution image. No corrections turned on.

First time I did "real life" shooting with K-7 on ISO 3200. "Is it my imagination ..." as Stones song says, but after updating to 1.03 firmware it seems to me that noise improved even in RAW. I can't claim this, as before I did only test shoots on high ISO, but I didn't saw any slight noise banding that was present before this firmware. Anyway - ISO 3200, 2.8, 1/30 sec, exp compensation -1. Processed in Topaz Denoise, which I found just recently to be great tool |

I've just installed it. I don't have FA lenses, but I can confirm that SDHC card vido recording is improved. Tested with Sandisk Ultra II (class 4) that wasn't able to record more than 2:30 min of video before. Now it works, recording doesn't stop.

Yes, in my case banding was much much worse, though in cases when sensor didn't heat up (some first dozen shoots) it was withouth lines and much more simillar to your case. I'm not clever here. If you think that this banding doesn't affect the most of you shoots, then maybe you shouldn't be worried. Or, maybe you could conntact Pentax Service, send them samples of banding and ask for assistance. In this case I had very good experinece with Pentax representative in Croatia and Pentax Europe HQ Service in Paris, France. They were willing to help.

You re right about this, but what I see from OP's sample is vertical band, and if it shows at the same place it doesn't look quite like pattern noise. Here is the crop from my faulty sensor K-7
But, it was really prominent on every shoot. There is no way I can't reproduce such banding with the second K-7. I'm not claiming that OP has same problem, but banding is just suspiciously similar.

I've been using film cameras for more then 20 years. From 35mm to MF (medium format). Please, try to search Google or some other search engine for "curvature" and film "thickness" relation to AF before making such statement. I don't have time nor the will for useless discussions.

My guess is that there is varying tolerance to the heat that the K-7 sensors have (quality control?). Could be also that only few are affected, it's hard to say.
As I said, the one that I have now has no problems with banding at all, no meter of LV use, outside temperature, ISO, or any other conditions. But the first one was catastrophe, which was eventually diagnosed by Pentax Service as faulty sensor.

Norman, this banding is very similar to banding on my first K-7, indeed. I could see it on any picture taken at any ISO when I brightened them up. It was at same place on the picture as it's on yours. But, the problem with that particular camera was that after 10 or so shoots, banding was visible even without brightening images, problably the result of sensor heating. There were even green and purple lines showing of the edge of that banding strip, after that 10 or more shoots. I send camera to Pentax Service and it was replaced due the faulty sensor. On replacement camera, there is no such banding whatshoever, only normal "pattern" noise when I brigten images up for a considerable amount, as asdf writes in his post. That is normal. The first camera was obiviously faulty, as photos taken in "normal" conditions were ruined.
Does this banding show when you use Live View?

Nothing to do with Hoya, or Pentax even. Latest Nikon and Canon cameras have microfocus adjustment ability also. I think that Sony was first to include this option for consumers. If you take a look at forums, back/front focus problems are always related to lenses, not cameras. But, yes, it's AF system errors.
It existed in film era also, but there is technical explanation why it wasn't so prominent (something to do with film thickens/curvature which is more forgiving to focusing errors). Maybe someone could explain this better.

Sorry, typo for Extreme II, I meant III. I didn't know there's no Extreme IV in SD, thanks for info. I'm using Extreme III 20 mb/s for video without problems.

The card is to slow, no metter if it's rated as Class 6. Most of the cards from not so renowened manufacturers fail to meet the standard. It's been disscused several times here. Most of forum members find that Sandisk cards work as stated, especially Extreme II and IV cards. So, you should try these. I am not shure about Lexar cards.

From my experience, I found that only Sandisk cards work as stated, so for video I only use Sandisk Extreme III or IV cards. And, by quick search on Google for tests on Transcend SDHC Class 6, I found results of 8 Mb/s for write speed, which is not enough, as Pentax suggest that write speed for K-7 video should be at least 10 Mb/s. It seems that the speed of those varies and its not up to standard. I tried Sandisk Ultra with 10 Mb/s speed, and it's also to slow. It could be that cards from one of the renowned manufacturers could also work, but I stick with Sandisk Extreme.
