K5 or K30. Aesthetics and feel?

Having handled both, my opinion is that the K5 wins no contest. The K30 has a nice feel for an entry level cam, but it isn't nearly as solid as the K5.

Of manual focus only:

Pentax-K 24mm f/2.8
Super-Takumar 28mm f/3.5
Pentax-A 50mm f/1.2
S-M-C Macro Takumar 50mm f/4
Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8
Yashinon Tomioka 60mm f/2.8 Macro
Pentax-K 85mm f/1.8
Vivitar Series 1 90mm f/2.5 Macro
S-M-C Takumar 135mm f/2.5
Tamron SP 70-210mm f/3.5 Model 19AH

The last one to go would be the Yashinon 60mm Macro. I am rather sentimental about it, but I like the focal length, the fact that it is macro, the ease of focus, the pre-set aperture mechanism....and the images.

Hi VonBaloney. I have the Macro Yashinon version. I just got it out and I am not experiencing any inconsistencies with the focus ring. It seems smooth focusing throughout the entire range, from infinity down to 1:1.

I have this lens and find it quite nice. I'd say it is worth the $45. And as Aloha Dave says, the pin is no problem. You can leave it there. I've never had any problems with Ricoh brand P series lenses (Vivitar P-K/R is a different story).

Lens Glass Issue - Please Help

Thanks for the responses. The lens is a Pentax-FA 45-85mm 645 lens and came with a Pentax 645N, not D. I thought I would try out medium format and if not liking it or using it as much as anticipated, I could resell and basically get my money back. So besides how it might affect images I am also concerned about how it might affect resale value.

So perhaps what happened is that a previous owner sprayed cleaner directly on the lens and some seeped to the back side via the edge.

Lens Glass Issue - Please Help

Hi. I recently acquired this lens but do not have much time to test it out as it is 645 and the window for returning it is near. (I would have to send the film out for processing.) The seller did not mention this potential issue, only that the lens was in "excellent condition."

Does anyone know what this is and if something like this can affect image quality? Streaky bright areas when light hits on it from the proper angle. I have seen fungus, haze, spotting, etc., but never this. It is not on the exposed side but looks like just behind the front element. Thanks.

Do you sell Pentax Extended Warranties?

Grimlock, last week I contacted/chatted with Pentax USA with that exact question. At least from this service rep's response, it looks like it is fine to purchase the extended warranty from any place, so long as you keep a receipt and purchase it within 90 days of purchase:

Pentax Imaging Chat of February 2, 2011
Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to Matthew P.
Matthew P: Thank you for contacting Pentax Chat Support. How may I help you?
Dan: Hi. I bought a K5 recently and was interested in the 2-year Pentax extended warranty. I purchased it through Camera Land in New York and right now they do not have any warranties to give. Can I purchase it through another retailer instead? For example, B&H?
Matthew P: You will have to search their website for K5 2 year extended warranty
Matthew P: We can always help you if you're within the first 90 days of having the camera.
Dan: I only got it a couple of weeks ago. My question is whether I can purchase the warranty from a different retailer than where I purchased the camera.
Dan: You have them for $100, right, or is the price different? Thanks.
Matthew P: Yes. You can.
Matthew P: 99.95.
Matthew P: It's within the first 90 days though.
The agent is sending you to Digital Cameras and Accessories - Official PENTAX Imaging Web Site.
Matthew P: I suggest checking out 'Warranty Informationa.'
Matthew P: Information*
Dan: So is it true that I cannot purchase the extended warranty from a different retailer than where I purchased the camera? Thanks.
Matthew P: You can purchase an extneded warranty from a different reatiler from your original purchase.
Dan: Okay, thanks. So there is no need to register the warranty, just to keep the receipt of purchase. True?
Matthew P: You do not need to register your camera to keep the warranty.
Matthew P: Just keep the receipt.
Dan: Okay, thanks for your help, Matthew. Have a good day.
Matthew P: You too! Thank you for using Pentax.

K-5 and Manual Focus

Hi,

I apologize for yet another front focus thread, but I have a question regarding manual focusing.

I recently bought a K-5 and overall think it is way amazing. No regrets and it will be my camera for the next three years!

I like to use old lenses and manual focus a lot, so I bought a Katzeye screen (for the K5) as I had good success with one on my K20D. However, even with the Katzeye I notice a bit of front-focusing at large apertures. For example, with a Pentax-M 50mm 1.4 and shooting at 1.4, correct focus is attained when the screen is ever-so-slightly split in favor of more distance. Although I didn't use a focus chart or anything extremely scientific, I did use a tripod and am pretty sure of the results.

Question 1: From reading some older discussions it is my understanding that focusing screen shims will not help with front focusing. Is this true?

Question 2: If even manual focus is front focusing then is it possible that this could be fixed via firmware? I would think it would have to be a hardware issue and I would have to send it in.

Question 3: Is there a certain manufacturing tolerance that is deemed acceptable? In other words, is it just my tough luck if I want to focus at such wide apertures? I can get used to it and always try to account for it, but would rather not if Pentax can fix it.

Question 4: Out of curiosity I've tried the autofocus micro-adjust global setting at -10. It seems to have zero effect on manual lenses. I realize that it is for "autofocus" lenses, but I thought that by making such an adjustment it would at least alter the AF confirmation that I so often rely on when using older manual lenses.

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can provide.

Dan

Price falling or just a mistake?

I received the K5 w/ WR Kit Lens from Camera Land today via the $1399 eBay auction. All looks well. Shutter count was at 1, and I did a basic test for stains and didn't see any.

Also included in the package was an official Camera Land receipt with my name on it! This is great as from my experience most eBay stores do not include one. Very helpful for warranty purposes, I would think. They also included a Camera Land post card with three Camera Land guys in it.

It looks like the auction is over for sure, but if they decide to re-list, I wholeheartedly recommend them! The only negatives I can think of are (1) that there was zero communication from them after the sale (no tracking, no confirmation, etc.), but I ordered on Saturday and got it Thursday. Not bad at all. And (2) they do have a 10% restocking fee for returns. I don't plan on returning it, so no problem for me, plus I can certainly understand such a policy for relatively smaller businesses as compared to Amazon or B&H. Also (3) they could do a much better job displaying their listings and might get more sales if they did.

On eBay (U.S.) today there's listed multiple new K-5's with the kit lens at $1399. The seller is "cameraland" who seems reputable. They claim to be a Pentax authorized dealer.

No stains on mine. Purchased in U.S. from Amazon on Black Friday, November 26th. Serial Number 3900xxx.

I've checked two days in a row now. Getting paranoid. A few dust particles around (I think), but nothing else except a variety of hallucinations from panning the clouds too much.

I think this has happened before. Pentax's website could use a bit more tending to, in my opinion.

Here's a direct link to download it off of Amazon's site. It's a very long URL so I shortened it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?location=http://g-ecx.images-amazon....975585163C1748

On a lot of the SMC version Taks there is a very tiny pin on the mount base that needs to be pushed in before the A/M switch can be changed. This could be the problem.

My Tomioka 60mm Macro is in great shape with original caps and case. SOldbear, besides the Mamiya version I also think I saw a Ricoh copy that doesn't even say "Macro" on it.

A few months ago I saw a mint copy of the Mamiya version with original box on eBay with a starting bid price but also a "Buy it Now" option of $175. I thought about getting it as a second copy but by the time I decided to go for it someone else had already placed a starting bid, nullifying the BIN. It ended up selling for about $275.

We should start a "worst LBA purchase/experience" thread for those of us who are trying to recover!

Wow, those deals are amazing! Cheekygeek, was that score off eBay?

This summer off eBay I got a "buy it now" for $150 which included a Yashica TL Electro with a Yashinon-DX 50mm 1.4, a Yashinon-DX zoom (a monster), and a Yashinon 60mm Macro with "Tomioka" on it.

The 60mm Macro is one of my favorites. The manual focus seems to "snap" in place and the image quality and sharpness I find terrific.

Pentax 2-yr extended warranty

Something else I found interesting about the extended warranty - I went to register the warranty card I bought and couldn't find the web form on their site. (It had been there before as I registered by K20d that way.) So I sent them an email and they responded by saying that it is not necessary to register the warranty and that I just needed to hold onto the card.

Unless they require proof of purchase for the warranty card then this would make it hard to stop the transferability of it, even though they say it's not transferable. I could see how this could lead to some buying and selling of the card later down the line, like from someone whose 1-year warranty has run out but doesn't have the extended warranty....but maybe I'm missing something.

For full compatibility (batteries, etc.) it would have to be the K10D, however, it looks like they're going for about $400 on ebay, maybe $350 if you're really lucky. As of today you can still get a refurb. K10D from Best Buy for $380 or a refurb. K100D for $270. You'd have to get rechargeable batteries for the K100D, though.

Thanks woof!! You saved me $40! I just bought a K7 and the extended warranty (for an extra $40). Now I'll return the card.

I just went on the Pentax site and chatted with a rep. She said indeed the free extended warranty was still going on and that all you have to do is make a request and send a proof of purchase to pentaxinfo@pentax.com or fax to 919-501-7575, Attn. Dorian.

It is interesting how this is not currently being advertised. I would think they would sell a few more cameras if it were.

Pentax K7 Price Watch? Or I am waiting because I am a cheap, errr, frugal SOB thread

This may be rather mischievous, but here's how to get the K-7 body for $800:

Go to Bing and type in "Nintendo Wii." You'll see that one of the links says 15% Bing Cashback for eBay (someone suggested this in one of the K-x threads). From my understanding during that particular eBay session the 15% will hold no matter what you buy (with any "buy it now"). Click on this and then find Beach Camera's K-7 kit with the WR 18-55mm kit lens. The price is $1149. So you then have the following scenario:

$1149
- $172 Bing Cashback (might have to wait 60 days)
= $977

$977
- $100 Rebate (gift card) offer from Pentax
= $877

$877
- $77 Sell the WR kit lens on eBay, etc.
= $800

Beach Camera via eBay has the navy blue K-x for $599. And then if you do Bing cashback you get 8% off of that for a total cost of $551. Also, what's nice about Beach and Bing is that you get the cashback instantly in your PayPal account.

Occasionally in a non-Buy-it-Now auction I've asked sellers if they'll include a BIN option if there are not any bidders yet. I don't suggest any price, but just nicely explain that I don't like the last second bidding and wonder if they'll add a BIN for people like me. I've found that often they'll oblige.
