Besides photography what other hobbies do you have ?

i'm an avid trail & downhill/freeride mountian biker. my dualie is gonna be 7 this year, and with brakes going on 10 it's got a nice vintage appeal these days.

i put together this hardtail 2 years ago and love it, but it's not as much fun at the local hills (due to speed & safety) so i'm going to swap the frame and wheelset, and boom my fiance has a high end bike.

I also have been keeping a mixed reef for a few years. this is an old pic when i had a hanging metal halide/t5ho fixture and diff hardware in the tank. i'm seriously considering changing my current t5ho fixture to leds 'cause it'd cost less than half as much to run the lights over the next 15 years.

i also got a sweet dlna/upnp network with an atom/ion htpc (25w peak) that plays everything thanks to the ion chip & bluray/hddvd drive. calibrated 32bit samsung 6series tv, with rca output to my class a/b p/p tube amp with electro-harmonix tubes :)

it's awesome! a/v equipment used to be a hobby, but i gave away my marantz receiver to a good friend and downsized to tubes/monitors.

i'm also at a point with my career where i'm making my own web apps/frameworks and releasing things (when i have time to dev) under the mit license so other companies/people can extend & use the base code. the general idea is that after i get roughly 200hr into the project i'll have a suite of tools/apps to resell in the market i tend to work in (gov & priv sector). it's really just a case of "sure i could use X framework for Y task, but if i write my own i know what it's doing all the time and it'll be leaner/faster".

it's also a case where my hobby/interest in making flash/dynamic websites in the mid 90s (teens) became a shitty job at $8/hr which is now my pretty solid career. after i finish an mvc2.net project i have a few iphone apps to make with the airplay sdk (windows/c++), which should translate into desirable experience for my current job.

af is far more useful than mf in a wide angle, tiny dof is not awesome on a tiny vf.

Interesting crit., some of this is "inside" a big tent and i was shooting natural light. Plus onday 2 not a lot of ice has been melted for clarity like the smaller sculptures.

Winterlude is an annual festival in Ottawa/Hull that a lot of people enjoy. There's ice sculpture contests, maple syrup on sticks rolled in snow, giant ice slides and fireworks! It's a week long event, so I'll probably be adding to this thread as time passes.

The fireworks were shot with my DA* 50-135, and the of the post was shot with my FA 50.

The next set will be a night series of the larger 2 person/team sculptures. I shot my nifty fifty at f2.0 with the occasional wide open f1.4. My fiance and I were the only ones shooting with primes, in a sea of giant zooms we definitely had an optical edge.

crap optics in front of good optics isn't a good idea. buy a wide angle manual focus like a 28mm/f2.8.

I went for a walk in the national Gatineau Park this morning (not too far from my home). I brought my trusty DA* 50-135 along.

Ash, my flash is usually off axis. That doesn't change the camra/flash distance to subject. If there was Pentax literature supporting a bounce method, i think it'd be in the 360/540 manuals.

um, no. the room is a control.

I went to the Rideau Canal last night for some long exposures, pointing toward the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

Shot with my DA* 16-50, 50-135 and Monfrotto 190XPROB/488RC2 tripod.

Poll: What would you buy? A Full Frame Pentax or an EVIL Pentax?

i want either a faster processor OR better software in the bodies. being aps-c doesn't really create many issues in the real world, especially since pentax offers a full digital prime kit as well as pro zooms.

the focus system is accurate, but slow. is it the software or the hardware? upgrading the bottleneck could provide much faster focus. is the difference between canikon & pentax, a core2duo vs a p2 celeron? contrast focus should be fast.

which service providers accept argb? all the ones available through zenfolio are srgb, KISS books are srgb; and that's where my printing ends, so i'm kinda curious.

does it matter if you're not printing at home or doing it for large publication?

a lot. the new dng 1.3 spec allows for more non-destructible edits to the dng such as dust spots, maybe red eye (was this 1.2 or 1.3)? and a few other things i don't use.

I'm kinda lucky, there's a competition held annually not far from my home. I'll shoot a series this year. It's fantastic to watch the carving.

here's one a shot last year from the competition. there's size classes :)

thanks! um, no i didn't i didn't get a close up. i had the wrong lens and the ice wasn't ideal imo. i just snapped it more as a documentary purpose than anything; so in a few years and i can say "oh yeah, and there was an ice swan..." :)

the whites are protected by matrix metering. in general i never shoot matrix unless it's absolutely needed (or using pttl fill).

it's not an interpretation, it's how it works. see that meter/guide in the manual? the mirror picture (shooting into it) is proper. no clipping, proper exposure. bouncing is under exposed with clipping.

i think i'm done trying to get you guys to understand how you're misusing things.

i really really (really) love my nat geo pack. it can handle approx 60lbs without causing massive neck/shoulder strain and there's a ton of places for me to strap things to it (which i do, with love).

the bonus is that it doesn't look like a camera pack, so i'm never worried about it.
